November Birthdays & Anniversaries

11/1 - Wendy Dart 11/16 - Seanna Phillips

Weekly Club Lunch Meetings

Oct 5th

Meeting At the appointed hour Lion President Wendy Dart quieted the rowdy group and opened the meeting in regular form.

Guests: We were glad to see Jim Henry on his 4

th visit to our Club,

and to hear that his application has been turned in. Wonder of wonders, Lion Doug Fleming came in early!

Birthdays: Lions Kenny Ayers and Loren Kaiser both have birthdays on the 10

th. Lion Kenny spun the birthday wheel and paid a fine,

but we still sang our melodious Birthday song to them.

Announcements: A Thank You letter from DG Marilyn Richardson was read thanking us for the hospitality extended to her at her visit. She enjoys visiting clubs and seeing what projects they are working on. Ms. Kirsti Dyer sent a letter for the Sonora Track Team, thanking us for the Club’s great support, and for the check for $3500, which will be used mainly for entry fees and travel for meets.

Lion President Wendy presented a Centennial Year Lion’s pin to Lion Bill Dunlavy for bringing in a new member.

MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT Fall is finally here. We’ve had a few days of glorious rain and cooler temperatures with the scent of burning fireplaces in the air. All these changes bring on a burst of

newfound energy and a desire to tidy things up for the com-ing winter months. It brings to mind all the celebrations and festivals we reminisce about from our childhoods. I was reading an email sent out recently from our International President Bob Corlew relating the unfortunate events occur-ring in two small towns here in the US where the Lions Clubs were sponsoring an event, as they had been doing for years, but where participants in the event drew unintended attention by making a political statement and in an offensive manner. Even though no club or club member had helped with that particular project, the Lions Club was still as-signed the blame for being the sponsor of the parade. This prompts me to remind everyone that we are held in high regard for the work we do in our communities and held to a higher standard. I urge everyone to keep that in mind when you’re out in public doing anything. Folks probably know you’re a Lion, and are looking at what you are doing. If you are doing something that is contrary to the image we are trying to project, all the good work that we do in our commu-nity is lessened. So during the upcoming holiday festivities and celebrations, please keep these things in mind. We are a good club with a solid reputation in the area. Our goal is to build and improve on this foundation. In the words of the late Helen Keller, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

Green Bag Day: Today was Green Bag day, and our Club mem-bers donated 10 very heavy bags.

TMAP: Lion Tom Penhallegon reported that 32 people have quali-fied so far to have trees removed from their property, thru the TMAP program. They expect to remove 50 – 60 trees. The Rock A Thon fund raising project for TMAP has been cancelled, due to minimal support. Plans are to schedule it in the spring, and to have a full day event with booths and mu-sic, at the Fair Grounds.

District Meeting: The District 4-A1 meeting will be held Nov 4 & 5 in Escalon. A dinner will be Friday night, with the District meeting held Saturday. The focus is on Hearing and Hunger. Our club will contribute $10 for any member towards the cost of the event.

Sickness and Distress: Lion Loren Kaiser has been diagnosed with Auto immune hepatitis. He is very uncomfortable now, but is hoping for a remission. Lion Lynda LaFlamme is still feeling sore from her car accident. Lion Rayma Garcia’s brother is doing poorly. PDG Jeanine Tucker has been diagnosed with eso-phageal cancer. Lion Chris Link was admitted to Stanford Hospital for a heart checkup. Please keep all of these friends in your thoughts and prayers.

Health Fair: A sign up sheet for volunteers to assist Lion Dr. Fleming at the Health Fair Oct. 18

th & 19

th was passed around.

Happy/Sad Bucks: Lion Chris Halley reminded members of the Second Satur-day event in downtown Sonora, and that her gallery is avail-able for classes and projects. Lion Kelly Ward gleefully re-lated a grandchild is on his/her way. Lion Tim Atchley is proud that his granddaughter’s team came in first. The last of Lion Joe Skaff’s daughters was married last weekend. Seventy-one years ago Lion Ray Bailey left Iowa and be-came a resident of California. Lion Mike Eachus attended his grandson’s wedding in Santa Barbara. One day Lion Kenny Ayers had nothing to do, so he counted how many pull tabs equaled one pound – and found it’s a total of 1047!

Secret Lion and Raffles: Lion Kelly Ward was the Secret Lion, and collected a few bucks. Raffles were won by Lions Judy Meeks and Dennis Heppner, and the critter was won by Lion Kelly Ward. Lion Ruth Moyer had won the Lion last week, and today had him all dressed up in a leather flight jacket and helmet, scarf, and shoes.

Lobster review: A speaker had not been scheduled for this meeting, so that we could have a lengthy discussion, led by Co-chairmen Tim Atchley and Joe Skaff, of duties of members at the Lobster Dinner this Friday night. This is one of our largest money raising projects, and everyone needs to do their part.

Raffles: The marble draw was won by Lion Frank Meckler. After he drew a white marble, he checked the bag just to be sure there really was a black marble in there.

Oct 12th

Meeting The meeting was opened in regular form by Lion President Wendy Dart, who welcomed Lion Jerri Critchfield back from her boat trip down the Mississippi. Of course, she had a wonderful time.

Guests: Lion Tim Atchley introduced Peter Cowles, President of Seeds of Dignity Ministries, our speaker today. We are glad Jim Henry also joined us for his fifth visit. His induction into the Sonora Lions Club will be next Wednes-day.

Birthdays: Birthdays: Lion Kelly Ward has her birthday next week. She paid a fine to not have the Birthday song sung, but of course the members sang it to her in our usual outrageous manner. Lion Crazy Bill Simpson said he was glad his hearing aid batteries were dead.

Announcements: We received a letter from Susan Mundy, our contact for the Green Bag program, who reported that the Mother Lode Food Project volunteers delivered 4131.5 pounds of food, toiletries, and pet food and $335 in checks to ATCCA this week. She also said, “As always, I can’t thank each of you enough for your part in making the project a continuous suc-cess.” Lion Bob Bader gave a recap of the Board meeting which was held today prior to our regular meeting. (Complete min-utes of the meeting are printed elsewhere in this newsletter.)

cational school that provides housing and food for 125 older students who would otherwise have to walk 3 – 4 hours daily to attend. Balay Dangpanan is also a feeding program and home for people needing medical treatment, and gives as-sistance with the complicated paperwork people need to receive medical care. He did a slide presentation of children who have been helped with surgery and medical care. Also, in one section of the restaurant was a display of beautiful products made in the Philippines for sale, and these pur-chases helps fund the programs.

White Ball Drawing: Finally, Lion Joe Skaff won the opportunity to draw a black marble but drew a white and so did not win the $345.50. Chances are improving though, since there are only 15 white marbles left.

Oct 19th

meeting The meeting opened in regular form, with President Lion Wendy Dart presiding. She hoped that everyone had en-joyed the rain we had last weekend. It was good to see Lion Lynda LaFlamme up and around, and able to attend the meeting. Lions Joanne and Bob Presson arrived late, using the excuse of long lines of traffic. Also late was Lion Paul Berg, but he came in hauling a heavy, huge plastic tub full of pull tabs, saying there were 3½ more tubs in the back of his pickup. These tabs had been collected by the students of Mark Twain Elementary School in Angels Camp over a period of time, but never turned in. 10 pounds of these tabs will pay for one family to stay a night at the Ronald McDonald House while their child is a patient in the Children’s Hospital. Lion Alex Mitt said his son lives across the street from the Ronald McDonald House in Oakland, and that the facility is beautiful and so appreci-ated by the families that stay there. The tubs will be taken to the District 4-A1 meeting the first weekend in November, and will be quite a sensation.

Lion Dr. Doug Fleming talked about the times for the four shifts of volunteers, who will assist him and his staff doing glaucoma eye testing at the Health Fair.

Sickness & Distress: Lion Loren Kaiser is being treated with medications for his hepatitis, and is feeling better. We are still missing Lion Lynda LaFlamme from our meetings.

Committee Reports: Lion Joe Skaff gave a report on our successful lobster din-ner last Friday. He thanked everyone for working so hard to make it a success. His favorite moment of the evening was watching The ‘Dehydrated Lion’ sipping water thru a stir stick. Everyone enjoyed the antics of The Lion during the dinner, and applauded when it was revealed that Lion Kelly Ward had been wearing the costume.

Happy/Sad Bucks: Lion Tim Atchley again had a sad buck for his losing San Francisco 49ers. Lion Ruth Moyer enjoyed her time directing traffic at the Indigeny Reserve Open House last Saturday, and reported that a complete stranger, a young man carry-ing a child, asked if she needed water. Ruth replied that she was a little parched. The young man left, purchased two bot-tles of water and returned to give them to her. Lion Tom Penhallegon also had a great time at the Indigeny Pumpkin Patch, selling over $500 worth of pumpkins. Lion Jerri Critchfield is happy to be home from her trip. In Branson, at the huge Sight & Sound building, she watched a story of Moses, complete with live camels and horses on the large stage. Lion Ray Bailey got his pen back.

The Secret Lion: Lion Joe Skaff was the Secret Lion, and six members did not shake his hand and had to pay.

Raffle Winners: Lion Jill Schwab won the first pot, and Lion John Moyer won the second, and said it would go toward the newsletter print-ing costs. Lion Ray Bailey won the use of the Critter for next week.

Program: The program was presented by Peter Cowles, the President of Seeds of Dignity Ministries, an organization working with faith based partners to help less fortunate Filipinos break out of the long-term bondage of poverty, both physical and spiritual. The Phil-ippines is a fast growing country with much poverty, and currently in turmoil with a new president leading the country. Almost all of the island of

Mindanao is now off limits due to great safety concerns. He talked about four of their programs to help poor people. Their most successful projects are providing fishing boats and put-put taxis, to help people provide for themselves. One of their best feeding programs is at a home for 70 chil-dren, the Balay Pasilungan Tribal Home. Many tribal parents want their children to receive education, but the children have to walk 3 – 4 hours to and from school just to attend. This Home was started to provide a place for children to stay Sunday thru Friday, in a safe environment, where they could have meals. The Marilog High School of Agriculture is a vo-

tabs Lion Paul with one of the tubs full of tabs.

Birthdays: Lion Ellie Duste said she is 73 and proud of it. Members sang a deafening birthday song, even tho she had spun the wheel to pay a fine.

Announcements: Information was given for upcoming events, including the Paddle Palooza Spooktacular, Camp Pacifica’s Night at the Horse Races, the Linden Lions Baroldi & Rib Feed, and the Tracy Breakfast Lions Crab Dinner. The Salvation Army is

requesting members to again become Bell Ringers for the upcoming Christmas season. Please sign up if you are able to help. Some of our members are at the Health Fair today, assisting Lion Dr. Doug Fleming in glaucoma screening. Eight Lions helped Dr. Martinez-Torres do the testing of 151 people yes-terday.

Guests: We welcomed Jim Henry, who is to be inducted into the Club today, and Cynthia Hadell, our speaker. Also welcomed was Alex Mitt, a member of the Escalon Lions, who was the win-ner of the $500 prize gift certificate from Heuser’s Furniture Center given at our Lobster Dinner, and his friend Lynnet. They are a fun couple, and we encouraged them to visit again.

Alex Mitt also was the winner of the $500 Lobster Drawing Door Prize

A New Member: The induction of Jim Henry was held, with his sponsor Jim Gormely at his side. Lion Tom Penhallegon gave a history of the Lions organization, and pre-sented to Jim a vest, pins, and information packet. Lion Jim then said he had lived in Sonora for 30 years, and had been a school financial manager.

Happy/Sad Bucks: Lion Jerri Critchfield’s Happy Buck was that her church is having their annual Pastie dinner this Saturday. A Pastie is a baked meat and vegetable filled crust, like a calzone, and in the 1800’s was made by the wives of the Cornish miners for the men’s lunches. Lion John Moyer is thankful for his quiet mornings sitting in his chair, thinking and listening to music, while wife Ruth sleeps. He is also happy to be going to a 60’s class reunion in Tuolumne this Saturday, and seeing old friends. Lion Mal Perry just got back from a wonderful trip to Ireland, and then participated in a 2 mile paddle board race on Lake Tulloch, coming in second. Lion Mike Eachus is happy because he was able to get out of bed this morning without falling down. Lion Kailen Hill just finished repair work on his pickup, and then his other vehicle died. A sad buck was given by Lion Bob Presson, whose son is still in jail, for a year now. Please keep him in your thoughts.

Secret Lion: The Secret Lion was Mike Eachus, better known as the Rat Fink, who fined most of table number one for ignoring him.

Raffles: Raffle winners were Lions Mike Eachus and John Poor-baugh, and the Critter was won by Lion Wendy Dart.

Program: The speaker today was Cynthia Hadell, Attorney at Law, who spe-cializes in Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law. Her interesting program covered numerous aspects of law, and elicited many questions from the members.

Marble Draw: With only 15 white marbles left in the bag, chances were

good for a winner, and Lion Bud Regelin pulled out the black

marble and won $356!!

40 Year Member Lion Wendy Dart presented a 40 year member chevron to Lion Ray Bailey, who reminisced about winning $1000 years ago in a Ronald McDonald bicycle race.

October 26 meeting With Lion President Wendy Dart presiding, our meeting started off in regular form, except for a somewhat disorgan-ized beginning to “God bless America”.

Guests: Our guests included Peter Van Houten, a guest of Lion Ron Cole. Mr. Van Houten lives in Twain Harte, and is an Assis-tant Dean of Students at Berkley. Lion John Moyer intro-duced his cousin Nedra Doyle and her husband, Lloyd , who are here visiting from Eugene, Oregon. They are on the re-turn leg of a five week trip around the country in their motor home. Also visiting was John Bristow, a former member of

World Diabetes Day is November 14

This year's World Diabetes Day theme is "Eyes on Diabetes." According to the International Federation of Diabetes, one in two adults with diabetes is undiagnosed. A diabetes screening can identify asymptomatic individuals who may have diabetes but don't know it. Lions, this-November 14 conduct a diabetes screening in your community! Help raise awareness about diabetes, and give community members the resources and information they need to lead healthier lives. Learn how to organize a diabetes screening.

the Lions, who had been President of the Sonora Lions twice. It was special that he brought a large bag of pull tabs with him. Our speakers for today’s program were Sheriff Jim Mele, Under Sheriff Bill Pooley, Canine Deputy Wyatt Oliver and Zeus.

Birthdays: Lion President Wendy Dart has the Big 60 birthday Nov 1

st ,

and she paid a Big Fine. Lion Chris Link’s birthday is tomor-row, the 27

th. Although he paid a fine, the members bellowed

out the Birthday song so beautifully it brought him to tears.

Announcements: Lion Ron Cole paid a fine because his daughter called him during the meeting. There was a display of beautiful photographs taken by Club members, to be judged for the Lions Photo Contest. The winner today will be sent to the District for further judging. A signup sheet for volunteers for bell ringing for the Salva-tion Army was passed around. Tickets to be sold for the Pancake Breakfast fund raiser on December 3

rd were passed out to members by Lion Jerri

Critchfield. A final report on the Health Fair was given by Lion Dr. Doug Fleming. Nine Lions helped man the booth for Glaucoma testing, serving 33 hours, and 293 patients were seen. Of that number, 16 were found to have elevated eye pressure, and were encouraged to have further testing. Glaucoma does not have symptoms in the early stages, and diagnosing it early can prevent future problems. The Club Christmas party will be held Sunday, Dec. 11

th at

the home of Lion Dr. Doug Fleming. Bring something for the Pot Luck and a gift for the exchange. Student Speaker Contest & Spouse Appreciation Day will be on February 15, 2017

Committee reports: Lion Tom Penhallegon suggested a project to raise funds for TMAP. He showed pictures of cute decorated snowmen made with rounds of pine trees that could be sold. When he mentioned this to Cal Fire, they quickly agreed to cutting the wood, and soon delivered them. They will be sold for $25 each, or a family of 5 for $100. Members who can help deco-rate them please contact Lion Tom. The Fall issue of the Friends and Neighbors magazine had an excellent two page article on TMAP. The Sheriff’s Department recently donated $250 to the TMAP project. At a special Board Meeting today, it was voted to donate $4000 to the teachers at the Jamestown Elementary School. More information is in an article elsewhere in this newsletter.

Happy/sad bucks: Lion Ray Bailey paid $4, to cover fines for not being here for the next month. Lion Tim Atchley helped his wife Kathy cele-brate her 65

th birthday in San Diego last week. Lion Chris

Link enjoyed attending his first ever football game. Lion Glenn Gottschall and his wife returned from a wonderful trip to Ireland. Lion Tom Penhallegon was glad that Past Presi-dent John Bristow was visiting us.

Secret Lion: Lion President Wendy Dart was the Secret Lion, and Tail Twister Lion Kelly Ward collected fines from Lions Lynda, Jerri, Bud, Chris, Bill, and Ed.

Raffle Winners: Lions Lynda LaFlamme and Bud Regelin were the winners, and Lion Kelly Ward won the Critter.

Program/Speaker Sheriff Jim Mele began our program by purchasing the first TMAP snowman for $25. He also gave a Happy Buck prais-ing the Club for it’s growth. The last time he spoke to the Club there were only two tables of members, compared to the full house now. He discussed the Canine program here in Tuolumne County, which now has four dogs. Each dog costs $10,000, plus the necessary outfitting of cars and items for the dogs like bullet proof vests.

Fellow Lions

I have come up with a fast and easy project to promote our TMAP program at this Christmas season, Wooden Snow-men. If we can find a source for the wood (free) and have it cut in 4 inch thick rounds, how many of you would be willing to help me assemble, paint the buttons and faces on them getting ready to sell? ... $25.00 donation each --- all pro-ceeds going to TMAP. This could be done as a fun work-day with a BBQ at my house under my carport. Much of the money for these dogs is raised in the community. Canine Officer Wyatt Oliver is a graduate of Sonora High School, and it is wonderful having him back working in our commu-nity. His partner, Zeus, is 16 months old, and still some-what of a rambunctious puppy. They have been on the streets together for 2 months, with Zeus function-ing as a narcotics and patrol dog. A question and answer session followed, with members wondering why their badges had black bands on them. Recently four officers have been killed just in California, and the shrouding of badges honors them.

Photo Contest: Votes were counted for the Photo contest, and the winner was a beautiful scene of reflections on a lake, taken by Lion Joe Skaff. The photo will be sent on to District for further judging.

Marble Draw: The pot is now up to $63, and Lion Tim Atchley drew his own ticket, which didn’t help, since he pulled out a white ball.

Support for

Jamestown Elementary Jamestown Elementary Principal Pelfrey registers surprise on learning of the Sonora Lions Club donation to Jamestown Elemen-tary. Lion Joe Skaff, pictured below, upon learning of the school’s need for classroom supplies and support for school field trips ap-proached the Sonora Lions Club to take this on as a club project. The members were very suppor-tive, and after meeting with the Principal and staff, a list of supplies and costs for field trips was presented to the club. During the Board meeting this week it was approved to donate $4000 to the School - $1500 was allocated for individual teachers to use to assist in class-room expenses and $2500 allocated for field trip expenses.
