game playGame play in the Sonic series tend to have a very fast pace and some levels can be done in under a minute is very fast. However there are also the usual planning where to go and puzzle aspects which helps slow the pace down a little so the games would not be all speed since if not careful you will lose all lives very easily. The tradition continued in the 3D realm though other game play aspects came around like collecting items, setting records and collect choas emeralds. Storylines are in the games though they arn’t really watchmen based since everything feels childish at times.

Beginning gamesThe first game in the series came out June 23rd 1991 on the SEGA mega drive and used as SEGA’s mascot to battle with Nintendo’s mascot, Mario. As time went on more games in the series came out for the mega drive and became one of the most popular series of the early 90’s. The first game also became packaged with mega drive at the time.

Later games an 3D future. As time and technology in video games and consoles, Sonic moved on with the times to go with the times. These included adding stories, voice acting, game play changes, more content than the old games and ways of grabbing players attention. Some games in the 3D days where good...

Comics

In 1993, 2 comics under the Sonic name was released, one in the USA by Archie comics which is the longest running video game based comic and one in the UK by fleetway which ended in 2002 lasting 223 issues. The comics were made of course for fans of the series as well as a way to get newer fans of Sonic or get more kids into reading comics. The comics tend to get mixed reviews from critics and fans but sales are pretty decent. Since the fleetway comics are no longer around the Archie comics are drawn by artist Patrick Spaziante or SPAZ for short who also worked on teenage mutant ninja turtles of dreamwave comics.

creatorsSonics creator goes by the name Yuji Naka, a Japanese creator who was given the programing and designing of Sonic back in 1990 and 1991.What he created would make an impact to gaming fans and himself. He was a part of the Sonic creating team Sonic team until leaving Sonic Team to make Probe for indy games.

MerchandisingAs well as games and comics, Sonic has good lot of merchandise which can range from plushies, shirts, wallets, cards and Toys which gets confusion on who creates them though TOMY seems to be doing majority of them.

Character designSonic has had 2 designs in his time. His short, black eyed, 1991 look and then in 1998-1999 Sonic had a redesign looking taller, slimmer and having Green eyes. The new look came in Sonic Adventure which seemed to be a reboot of the series since the Dreamcast came out and Sega needed a game to give them a head start. In 2011, to mark the 20th anniversary, Sonic Genarations came out with BOTH versions of Sonic for both old and new sonic players. It should be noted though that people on the internet have many negativity on Sonic’s green eyed look meaning flame wars tend to happen.

Allies and friendsTo keep ideas for the Sonic Series, in time more characters were introduced as time went on. Tails, Sonic’s best freind started on Sonic 2 who can fly using his Tails as a chopper, Knuckles, who was on Sonic 3, who can float for a while and a guard of an island, Amy who was on Sonic CD who acts like Sonic’s lover and Cream who started out on Sonic Advence 2 who was the youth and fan of him. Later games in the series including early times, could have you play as Sonic friends, each being teamed with Sonic or having their own gameplay for example in Sonic adventure 2, Tails used a transformed plane and used it as a walking tank to make through the levels.

Enemies and RivalsLike a lot of superhero based kids products, very hero needs a Villain and that goes by Dr Robotnic or Eggman just for laughs who’s main goal like many villians is taking over the world. (OF COURSE!) In Terms of Rivals, Sonic’s main one is a Black Hedgehog named Shadow, A created hedgehog who uses the Chaos Emeralds to harness the power of chaos control which gives him time stopping or speed abilities.

segaSonic’s Publishers are the japanese comany called SEGA which used to create Video games consoles up until 2001 where games went multiplatform. Sega are also responsible for games such as Total war, Yakuza, Crazy taxi, Virtua fighter, Virtua Tennis, Daytona USA, House of the Dead, Phantasy star, out-run, Shenmue, Shinobi, super money ball, streets of rage, Valkira chronicals and many more.

Competition from others. As I did state Sonic was made to be SEGA’s mascot because of the rising popularity of Mario, the Mascot of Nintendo. However there were also many other video game mascots Sonic had to deal with including Pac-man, Rayman, Mickey Mouse, Megaman, Klonoa and just about many other mascot that people could catch on.Pretty much as you would think the battles between Mickey mouse, Bugs Bunny and Felix the cat. Some may say a mascot is copycat idea but it helps to try and get younger audiences to play games for having likeable characters.

Anniversaries To mark the series many anniversaries, Sonic team and SEGA tend to show it to fans and make games marking those accessions. Sonic Adventure 2 for the 10th anniversary, Sonic the hedgehog 2006 for the 15th anniversary and Sonic Generations for the 20th anniversary. Right now the series has reached its 22’nd year up to this presentation and has lasted 2 decades straight.
