St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, Huffman, Texas
April 9 2017 “Ac vely striving to be a holy and loving Family of Faith, serving God and neighbor.”
Song of Faith by Rev. Richard Barker My dear parishioners, whether one makes it, shares it, or mangles it, the human per-son loves music. You hum quietly to yourself. You whistle aloud. You sing while bath-ing. It doesn’t ma er really how you sound. A favorite song, a cherished hymn, a be-loved anthem forever possesses the power to keeping you singing. Our God has wri en a “song of salva on”: “Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.” [Isa 45:22] God wants you to sing out joyfully too, for human beings are created to live in harmony with God and neighbor. Harmony is universally admired: all things working together in a way pleasing to all. You’ll have to listen a en vely and learn your own special part. It’s true that prac ce makes perfect, and careful listening leads to understanding. So much is at stake to be sure, to be sure. For the long melodic line of salva on is not proposed to human beings for entertainment, but rather for the regenera on of their eternal souls. Like himself, Jesus wants you to be good at hearing his father’s “will” and pu ng it into prac ce. When one no longer listens to God, it’s impossible for that person to sing to God. Moreover, he forgets what harmony is, and such a voice takes on harshness and cruelty. Undeniably, the melody of love and faithfulness is interrupted, some mes never to be finished. It’s a very great sadness when a person is “deaf” to joy, opportunity, crea vity, change and self-reflec on. The saddest music, of course, treats of woundedness and loss. Never are people more beau ful, or human poten al more spectacular, or cherished memories more compelling than when lost, given up or stolen. Some mes the song of mercy is very faint indeed, even ex nguished in the wounded heart of someone we love most. We cry out, Why can’t the one I love see this? Why does he turn away from love itself? Can a hardened heart be so ened? Can it return to life? Will people hold on to anger and bi erness forever? The desire, in-deed the search for a person, will determine the outcome. Pope Saint John Paul II wrote that all human longing is the search for a person, and that person is Jesus Christ, the only one worthy of our absolute trust. No ma er what you may have said or done, Jesus has never walked away. He waits pa ently nearby, gazing lovingly on you. Reach out to him. Let him take you by the hand. Say, Jesus. Say, yes. Say, I give myself to you! Jerusalem, My Des ny is one of many beau ful selec ons in our Catholic repertoire. Remarkably, the words and music of this anthem capture the lament of the prophet Isaiah’s Suffering Servant whom we know to be Jesus Christ. The song expresses Our Lord’s absolute certainty that while he suffers innocently for the sake of humanity, God will not recoil from his suffering. This anthem of faith, like Isaiah's servant song, was wri en to strengthen our very own Chris an community:

Forty Years of Chris an Life to Celebrate!!
2017 is a year of celebra on for St. Philip the Apostle parish. We are recognizing 40 years of celebra ng the Sacrifice of the Mass in which we share in the joy of the Holy Eucharist -- the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ.
We will be celebra ng 40 years with over 15,000+ Masses, thousands of prayers and hours of service in God’s kingdom, hundreds of songs, and uncounted blessings and graces from God! Moreover, 2017 marks our 25th year of Adora on of the Blessed Sacrament with over 80,000+ hours of scheduled weekly adora on of the Blessed Sacrament and prayer me. We have so much to be grateful for.
We will also be honoring those who have received their Sacra-ments at St. Philip’s. All of those who have been Bap zed, Confirmed and received their First Holy Communion. We will celebrate our pastors, our ministers, our families and all who have helped to make St. Philip the Apostle a vibrant and lively faith community.
How many confessions have been heard and souls renewed by the forgiveness of sins? Think of the weddings, bap sms and funerals and the many other family celebra ons we have shared as members of the Body of Christ. It is a joyful me, and we have many good reasons to celebrate!
Please plan to join us for the 11:00 Mass on Sunday, April 30th where we will gather as one people united in our love of Jesus and share in the Sacrifice of the Mass. Plan to stay with us for an a ernoon of family-style celebra on with food, fun and good fellowship!

Confirma on Journey
Dear St. Philip’s family, Our first year retreat was a huge success! We le on Friday a ernoon with 40 of our kids and we re-turned Sunday with the same 40 kids. It is always a sign of trust that our parents allow us to take their children into the woods without their phones. We asked our Confirmandi to unplug from all electronic devices for the weekend. They balked at first but in the end decided they could live without their be-loved cellphones for two days. Our retreat would not happen without the endless hours of hard work Becky Pursell gives to these re-treats. As our Youth Minister and Retreat Coordi-nator, it falls to Becky to plan the en re weekend. Our retreats are a meaningful and memorable me for our Confirmandi because of her dedica on and hard work. Thank you Becky! The Knights prepared all of our meals while on retreat. We ate very well! David Zaunbrecher spearheaded the Knights as head cook with Chris Cupples as his sous chef. Country Glenn, Mark Faucheux, Ray Kern and Gary Aldrich provided strong support preparing all of the meals and clean up. It is a true blessing for our young church to be able to witness these Catho-lic men serving their parish. Thank you Knights. We appreciate everything you do for us. Our retreat team led the Confirmandi the en re weekend. They were small group leaders, prayer partners, skit par cipants and actors in the Living Sta ons of the Cross. Jonathan Bardwell was retreat leader with Megan Pursell. The other retreat leaders were Joshua Sparks, Faith Hebert, Alan Soto, Sarah Jenkins and Robbie Wight. Becky and I are so proud of these young leaders. They exceeded our expecta ons. A huge “thank you” to our retreat speakers! Jacob Kasper spoke about his love of the Eucharist. Allie and Thaddeus Howard spoke about being chaste un l marriage. Thad Cardine shared the history of the Sacrament of Confirma on. Our retreat leaders shared their Patron Saints and why they con nue to par cipate in CCE classes post Confirma on. These messages are valuable and mely for our Confirmandi to hear. We are called to serve and share our faith. These speakers shared their faith with the kids freely and with glad hearts. A special thank you to David Garcia, Sr. for chaperoning one of the boy’s cabins. David Zaunbrecher and Chris Cupples chap-eroned the other boy’s cabin. They didn’t get much sleep but gave their me with a smile. Their willingness to spend the weekend with us made it easier for us to spend me with the kids while concentra ng on our faith. We had a hailstorm, sand everywhere and no chairs in sight for the en re weekend. Our bunk beds were built for munchkins and our backs were aching. No one was le dry a er canoeing and smores were consumed at the bonfire. We sang along to a ukulele and played a vicious game of Alaska baseball. The Scoobys and the WOGs can claim bragging rights to the higher scores. The skits were humorous where we had Moses in a grass skirt and Elsa wig, Thor interacted with Jonah (who was put in the corner like Baby), Beyoncé had pink hair and fought Harry Po er, Noah chose the beast over T Rex, and we had mean girls and a Good Samaritan. The Four Headed Tree of Knowledge gave outrageous answers to our very clever ques ons while their branches were ge ng red.

...Our kids were toasters, dryers (with back flips by Bri!), vac-uum cleaners and food savers where we sealed “Broccoli” and “Steak” and “Big Snack”. They are imagina ve, crea ve, friendly and fun to be with. We may not get much sleep but we have a good me while we are awake. One more “thank you” is in order. Our retreat would never happen without the constant support of Fr. Barker. He makes it possible for us to take our kids away for a weekend. This year he was unable to a end the retreat with us. We returned home Sunday a ernoon and celebrated Mass with our families. It was a beau ful way to conclude our week-end of faith. Thank you for your prayers for our safe retreat. Please con-nue to pray for the Confirmandi and teaching team as we
journey to the Sacrament of Confirma on. Sincerely in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Lyne e Zaunbrecher Confirma on Coordinator
I HAVE fixed my eyes on your hills, Jerusalem my des ny! Though I cannot see the end for me, I cannot turn away. We have set our hearts for the way; This journey is our des ny, Let no one walk alone. The journey makes us one.
Whether God’s praise is sung by men or angels, or by one or ten-thousand voices, it’s not up to us. Should the whole world, however, turn against the King of Kings and Lord of Lords save one, let that faithful one be you. Let your voice be heard, indeed, sing out with all your heart, soul, mind and strength to the glory of God the Father! Sincerely in the hearts of Jesus and Mary Your pastor, Reverend Richard Barker

When you receive Communion during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, it is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ that you are receiving. Holy Communion, in the Catholic Church, is reserved for those who have received the sacrament of First Holy Communion, have been catechized (taught) in our Catholic faith and have made a profession of faith. One should abstain from Holy Communion if they are in mortal sin and have not received the sacrament of reconcilia on. If you are not Roman Catholic or are in need of the Sacrament of Recon-cilia on, we ask that you refrain from receiving Holy Com-munion in the Mass. However, you may go up to one of the ministers for a blessing when Holy Communion is being offered. By crossing your hands over your heart, the Priest or Eucharis c minister will know to give you the blessing.
Also, if you choose to receive only the Blessed Sacrament and not from the Chalice, it is fi ng nevertheless to pause for a mo-ment to honor Christ’s presence in the Precious Blood—with an appropriate sign of devo on. We would not think to pass a friend on the street without some acknowledgement. Our Lord Jesus Christ deserves no less, and most assuredly, a great deal more.

A PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS
God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son’s Kingdom as priests, deacons, reli-gious, and consecrated persons. Send your Holy Spirit to help us respond generously and courageously to your call. May our community of faith support voca ons of sacrifi-cial love in our youth. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God for ever and ever. Amen.

PLACE YOURSELF LAST The tendency of the flesh, influenced by the world, is to be considered important by others.
Many want to be in first place and do not have the pa ence to wait.
When neglected you must rejoice.
If you are rejected then hyou must be happy.
When others are given preference over yhou, learn to accept these gi s with peace.
