Sustainable Communities Program
Goal: Work with our customers to showcase energy efficient, sustainable projects that incorporate SDG&E-owned clean generation systems
• Integrate photovoltaics, plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) chargers and energy storage with advanced communications & control systems in support of SDG&E’s Smart Grid Deployment Plan
Systems – photovoltaics, fuel cells & energy storage
• Owned, maintained & operated by SDG&E
• Typically interconnected on utility side of the meter
• No effect on customer utility bill
• SCP now has 36 projects for a total of nearly 4.4 MW
• Includes a 400 kW fuel cell
Awarded the US Green Building
Council Leadership Award

Sustainable Communities Program
This is an innovative distributed-generation program in answer to adding more renewable energy to our grid
Potential Benefits to customer:
• Collaborate with SDG&E on a Smart Grid project
• Energy Dashboard Education for occupants and visitors
• Community partner to help provide locally generated clean power
• Public Recognition – Sustainable Communities Champion Award, website, advertisement recognition & case studies
• Possible LEED® points or payment for space occupied by photovoltaics system
Potential Benefits to utility:
• Clean, renewable distributed generation on the grid
• New advanced energy storage projects will:
• Reduce intermittency from PV• Offset PEV charging• Peak shave utility peak load
• Showcases SDG&E’s environmental stewardship

Steps in the process
Contract terms:
• 20 year lease with options at years 10 and 15 to renew, purchase the energy system or request removal of the system
• Lease payment (if applicable) is paid annually, but the first five years are paid upfront
– Lease payment is $0.01/kWh per year, calculated up front based on nameplate of PV
– e.g. 100 kW PV – annual lease payment of $1,700
PV/Clean Energy Installation:
1. SDG&E issues a RFP to approved solar vendors
2. SDG&E awards the bid
3. Solar vendor designs the PV/Clean Energy system
4. Solar vendor obtains permits
5. Work with construction schedule to install the system
6. Commission the system

SCP Installations to date: 36 Projects for a total of 4,380 kW
• They collectively generate enough energy at peak production to supply 2,855 homes.
• The energy produced prevents more than 8.9 million pounds of CO2 equivalent from entering the atmosphere each year.
• The GHG savings from the electricity produced is equivalent to not driving a car 11.6 million miles, or planting over 133,000 trees.
