About SOLARIC

Solar Intercontinental (SOLARIC) Ltd. is a Bangladeshi registered Research and Product Development Company in the field of Renewable Energy (Solar) since 2009. The company started its commercial operation in 2011 to productize the newly invented technology. With a factory established and operated by 50 employees, the company is producing thousands of Energy Efficient Solar Home Systems per month since June 2011. SOLARIC develops new and appropriate technology such as 3rd generation Solar Home System (3G-SHS) and also manufacturing the product and distributing them through its own network and partners.

Background

Energy crisis and Environmental pollutions are two of the most important issues in the world now. Bangladesh along with most of the developing countries is the victim of these crises. Bangladesh being a low income country and having least possible proven mineral resources, struggling from the beginning to meet the growing energy demands. The shortfall between the demand and supply has been sky rocketing in the last few years as the purchasing power of the rural and middle class is growing due to influx of foreign remittances. The quest for alternative source of energy and the thrust for energy conservation are the inevitable outcome of this crisis.

Realizing these facts, SOLARIC devoted itself since 2009, in the research of developing a new technology to address the need of the time, namely affordable solar solutions and Conservation of Energy. The concentration was on the applications of solar energy and making it commercially viable for domestic and commercial uses and reducing environmental pollutions. After one and half years of research, the company successfully developed “SOLAR OPTIMIZER” which dramatically improves the efficiency of Solar system and reduces the end-user cost by as much as 50%. Built-in features like Intelligent Power Tracking (IPT), Efficient Power Management and the use of innovative new appliances like Energy-saving Fan and LED Lights, the power consumption can also be reduced by 90% and thereby reduce the system cost dramatically. Based on the patented technology, SOLARIC now offers 3G-SHS which is a combination of Solar Optimizer, LED lamp, Energy efficient fan, Solar Battery and Solar Panel.

Key Management Profile

The Founder

Didar Islam, Managing Director & CEO

SOLARIC was formed in 2009 by its principal entrepreneur, Mr.Didar Islam, who is the

Managing Director and CEO of the Company. Didar is an electronics & electrical engineer

with professional experience in semiconductor design in the US. After graduating from

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), he moved to the US to

complete his Master’s degree and pursued a PhD at the University of Florida. He holds 10

US patents, founded several US companies and founded the first semiconductor design


company in Bangladesh after his return to Dhaka. Didar developed and patented the micro-

inverter IC that is now used in SOLARIC’s solar home and power backup systems.

Fahmida Sultana, Finance Director

She is a computer engineer with professional experience in ORACLE Corporation, Orlando,

Florida. After graduating from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology

(BUET), she moved to the US to complete her Masters degree at the University of Central

Florida.

ABM Noor-e-Alam, CPA - Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

He is an Associate Member of the AICPA (Eng& Wale), also an Associate Member of the

Institute of Commercial & Industrial Accountants ( Malaysia), and a member of Dhaka Tax-

Bar-Association and awarded 1 year certificate course in UCPDC & URC by ICC, France. He

is a veteran financial analyst with more than 16 years experience in the field of finance,

accounts, taxation including VAT, customs and company matters, export, import and also

discharged his duties in senior management position in different companies in Bangladesh.

Naznin Akhter – Director, Marketing

Head of Marketing Operation,a highly talented engineer from BUET and MBA from North


South University, heading the entire marketing operation. She has successfully running her

own business for 5 years, brings the expertise of running local operation and the skill set of

engaging local partners. She has been awarded by the IEB Merit Award for contribution in

activated carbon manufacturing in Bangladesh.

Nasir Uddin Ahmed- Chief Technology Officer (CTO)

An electrical engineer from BUET being the Chief Technical Officer of SOLARIC, heading

the whole R&D team including New Product Development Department (NPDD) for

developing new products. He worked as top level management in AL-CATEL, Matrix

Engineering, Techno Worth Ltd., Power Zone, Power IC Ltd.

Kazi Shaiful Arif - Head of HR & Admin

Being experienced for 23 years in HR & Admin operations, joined as Head of HR & Admin.

He has completed Hons in Management & MBA in HRM and started his career in an

engineering consultancy firm. He has achieved best employee award in Rupayan Group.

Production In May 2011, SOLARIC setup the manufacturing facility of its own. With a factory space of around 10,000 sqft, all the electronics such as the Solar Optimizer, Micro-inverters, Energy meter etc. are being produced at the factory from scratch with basic components. Around 50 employees work at the factory premise with a production capacity of 5000 systems per month. Strict ISO standards are followed at the factory for quality control, occupation safety and environmental issues. Additional manufacturing capacity has been developed in China on CM (Contract Manufacturing) basis to increase the capacity 10fold.

Description of the Business 1. The company Solar Intercontinental (SOLARIC) Ltd. is a Private Limited Company,

registered under Joint Stock Co. Bangladesh. It is a high-tech company with the

primary objective to innovate new technologies, products and packages in the area of

renewable energy and marketing in Bangladesh, as the primary market and then export

to other countries worldwide as secondary market. Solar Micro-inverter for Off-grid

solar applications, the first and only practical solution available in the world, is the

core technology to be used for these products.

2. SOLARIC has developed 3G-SHS based on its patented technology which is based on its

ground-breaking technology known as “Solar Optimizer” and began production in 2011.

The result of this intense effort is a family of products, both Solar and Non-solar


applications that include LED based Solar Home Systems (SHS) for rural (off-grid) areas

3G-SHS (3rd Generation Solar Home System)

3G-SHS is the only commercially available high voltage (125V) DC based Solar Home System

In 2013 SOLARIC started export of its ground-breaking invention, 3G-SHS based on Solar Optimizer to India. Currently it is sending regular shipments to 2 of India’s renowned renewable energy companies.

UISC Project: 3,208 Union Parishad

Case Study: User Experience

One of the biggest projects completed by SOLARIC so far was to install Energy Managed Solar System (EMSS) at all 3,208 union parishad offices for Bangladesh Government under Union Service and Information Center (UISC) project. These offices are grid power connected. However, SOLARIC’s objective was to ensure proper solar power back-up while grid power interrupts.

This system consists of some high technological device like solar optimizer, energy tracker, photo voltaic module and batteries. We called this system as 3G solar system where output voltage is 125V dc instead of conventional 12V dc system. This high voltage dc system creates a huge difference compare to other solar system and increase the system efficiency by reduced voltage drop.

Energy Tracker is a unique device by SOLARIC which enables to shift between Low & High power mode. For instance, users will be able to run devices like laptop, printer, scanner, webcam, led light, fans etc at low power mode (regular load).

Govt. Digitalization Project: 487 Upazila solar powered

As a part of Bangladesh Governments E-governance initiatives, there was a project to establish connectivity among all government agencies. SOLARIC was the proud achiever to complete the project.

The objective was to provide uninterrupted power supply for internet connectivity modules such as router, video conferencing facilities etc. As a commendable player in the field of solar renewable energy optimization, SOLARIC was happy to extend its hand of cooperation.

Bangladesh Bank Project: 108 KWp Grid Free System

To help Bangladesh Bank’s “Green Building” initiative, SOALRIC has successfully completed one of its mega projects by installing a 108Kwp Grid free system at their head office.

The objective was to Installing Solar System with no additional battery. Due to its various disadvantages, Grid Tie was not the option they were looking for. So, SOALRIC innovated a new technology called “Grid Free” with an intelligent Delta controller.

The heart of the system is an intelligent charge control algorithm that senses the load and the Sun condition ( Irradiance) and appropriately sets the charging current from the PV so that it can support the load and also stores a small energy to cover the fluctuation of irradiance during day time. The amount of energy harnessed from the PV per day is equal to the energy consumed per day. As a result, a small size energy buffer is required to store the momentary excess. The PV is over-sized in a way such that it can offer significant amount of energy even at low irradiance (morning and afternoon) to elongate the backup time. It is a significantly cheaper trade-off as the price of the battery is 6 times more than the PV and it also poses health hazard and space constrain.

The department of Patent, Design and Trademarks of the Government of the Peoples Republic of

Bangladesh has granted three patents to the company, title of which with brief descriptions is given

below:

1. Improved Solar Home System Key features: 3G-SHS is a complete solar home system that removes the

limitations of traditional SHS (1G and 2G) by converting the low voltage (12V)

into higher standard voltage (120V or 220V). The conversion technique is DC-DC

to ensure high energy efficiency. The output voltage is highly regulated (less than

0.1% over variation of load and input level) so that LED lamp can be used directly

driven by the converter without any additional driver for the LED lamp. The choice

of output voltage in the 3G-SHS, within the range of 85V-265V (universal voltage

range) makes it possible to operate any standard energy efficient appliance such

as color TV (LCD or LED), CFL lamp (220V, AC), Laptop, energy efficient fan etc..

Standard wiring, unlimited distance, ability to charge mobile phone without any

additional adaptor etc. are the key benefits of using 3G-SHS in the off-grid areas.

2. Standalone Prepaid DC Energy Meter Key Features: SPDC-EMS is a complete energy metering system that removes

the need to have any remote communication using telephone, mobile phone,

internet etc. such that the system can operate independently in the area where it

is used. This unique system has been developed with three distinct features in

mind such as Standalone operation, Simple and low cost prepayment system,

Wide range of DC voltage as the source. The embodiment of the entire system has

been realized by developing 2 pieces of equipment known as Code generator and

DC prepaid meter. Code generator accepts input such as the amount of pre-

payment, meter ID etc. from the operator manually and generates a unique code

which is different every time and can be recognized by the DC prepaid meter only

which matches the meter ID. The DC pre-paid meter can be operated from a wide

range of DC voltage (12V to 600V) and can accept the unique code generated by

the Code generator and updates the available balance upon successful

authentication. Both devices are used in the same geographical location (usually

1-2 km) and does not need any other communication outside the location for

successful pre-payment and metering operation.

3. A highly energy efficient modularized DC – DC converter with a

small controller for turning ON the appropriate no. Of modules

by sensing the load

Key Features: is a highly energy efficient DC-DC conversion system where the

self-consumption and the conversion loss have been reduced dramatically by

using a number of smaller DC-DC converter modules in parallel and controlling

them using a smart controller which turns ON and OFF the appropriate number of

modules by sensing the load. Many of these converters can be used in parallel to

further increase the load capacity of the system. This unique system has been

developed with three distinct application nature in mind such as Efficient energy

conversion regardless of the load condition, 24 hour operation with variable load

and low cost easy scalability of the system.

13) What happens if user connects low voltage (12V) fan with Optimizer? a) The fan may run by collapsing the system voltage. In that case, lights and other

standard appliances will turn OFF. This is not a prescribed mode of operation. b) It will not damage the fan or the Optimizer.
