Malaysia: The Malaysian Government officially launched theirGREEN Technology Policy in July 2009 to encourage and promotethe use of renewable energy for Malaysia‘s future sustainabledevelopment. By 2015, about 1 GW must come from RenewableEnergy Sources according to the Ministry of Energy, GreenTechnology and Water (KETHHA).
By 2020, solar PV alone will contribute to 1.25GW of grid under theNational Economic Transformation Programme. The Malaysian Photovoltaic Industry Association (MPIA) proposeda five-year programme to increase the share of electricity
generated by photovoltaic systems to 1.5 % of the nationaldemand by 2015. This would translate into 200 MWgrid-connected and 22 MW of grid systems.
Pusat Tenaga Malaysia (PTM) and its IEA international consultantestimated that 6,500 MW power can be generated by using 40 %of the nation’s house roof tops (2.5 million houses) and 5 % ofcommercial buildings alone.SunPower and AU Optronics have begun the construction of a newsolar photo voltaic production facility, which will generate 1,400MWs. The facility will be completed by 2013 and the installedcapacity will be 28 solar production lines.IRM Group subsidiary IRM Solar Sdn Bhd, following the Feed-In
Approval it received from the Sustainable Energy Development Authority for the installation of 5.0MW capacity at Padang Besar. The FiT for IRM Solar will commence from 9 April 2013, and will beprovided for the next 21 years.
Twin Creeks Technologies wants to increase production to 100MWby opting for a joint venture in Malaysia to build productionfacilities. Twin Creeks has released a new product that slicespolysilicon with an ion cannon to one-tenth of the thickness oftoday’s wafers.
Panasonic has unveiled plans for a 45bn yen ($580m), 300MW PVproduction plant in Malaysia, adding to the Southeast Asiannation's growing status as a solar manufacturing hub. TheJapanese electronics giant says the vertically-integratedproduction facility will turn out wafers, cells and modules when itbegins operation in December 2012. Panasonic adds to a growinglist of world-class PV companies with production in Malaysia.
US thin-film giant First Solar has six plants operating in Kulim witha total 1.5GW capacity.
Germany’s Bosch announced in June that it will spend 520m($748m) building its own integrated PV manufacturing plant inMalaysia.
REGIONAL MARKET ROUND UP
SOLARASIA SUMMIT 2013
MALAYSIA ASIA’S PV/SOLAR MANUFACTURING HUB
The who’s who of the solar/PV industry will converge at the SolarAsia Summitwhich will be co-located with the SolarAsia 2013 Exhibition. It will be the
influential platform for senior government officials, power producers, IPPs,
developers, architects, consultants, contractors and planners to gather, network and updated on the latest issues and developments in solar/PV.The Summit will cover key issues including• Keynote on Regional Industry Trends & Government Initiatives
• Innovations & Development in Solar / PV modules
• Power Grid/FIT
• Case Studies – Major Projects
• PV Manufacturing Advancements
Malaysia, already the world’s 3rd largest solar manufacturing centre will host SOLAR ASIA 2013 – the International Solar Technology Exhibition & Conference at the Putra World TradeCentre from 17-19 September 2013. SOLAR ASIA 2013 will be the first dedicated event
serving the entire spectrum of the solar industry covering PV/Solar Panel, PV Production & Supplies, Integration & Automation and Installation.
Governments across the region have recognized that solar energy is the key renewable energyto address the increasing demand and rising fossil fuels costs. The Malaysian has taken thelead in promoting the adoption of solar energy among industrial, commercial and home usersthrough the various incentives which has generated significant demand for PV. At the same
time, the country continues its leading position as a PV manufacturing hub in the region. Tosupport this growth, the supply chain for PV production will be a key driver to the industry.
SOLAR ASIA 2013 is an integrated industry event that will include:• An International Exhibition featuring the latest in PV/Solar Panels, PV Production
Technology, Equipment & Supplies and Installation Systems.
• International Conference on Solar/PV Industry
• International Conference on PV Production
• Technology Seminars
• Demonstration on PV Installations
SOLAR ASIA 2013 is set to be Southeast Asia’s biggest international gathering of thePV/Solar industry which will showcase the latest products and technologies and where theexperts will share experiences and explore future trends and issues.

Malaysia has managed to become the third largest PVmanufacturers of solar modules and solar cells after Germanyand China. Malaysia now has the best opportunity to positionitself to become a global leader in solar PV manufacturing
Minister of Energy, Green Technology & Water, Malaysia
Thailand:The Government enacted a 15-year Renewable Energy Development Plan (REDP) in early 2009, setting
the target to increase the Renewable Energy share to 20 % of final energy consumption of the country
in 2022
Natural Energy Development (NED), a cooperation of local and foreign financial institutions together with
manufacturer Sharp Corporation will develop the largest solar plant in Thailand.
DuPont Apollo also recently completed its 8.7 MW solar photovoltaic plant in Prachin Buri province, 180
km north of Bangkok. The plant was jointly developed with Thai conglomerate Loxley and utilisesDuPont Apollo’s thin-film photovoltaic modules
NED is constructing a 73 MW (DC) solar plant in Lopburi province, about two hours north of Bangkok,
and earlier this year the company announced it would expand the gross capacity of the plant to 84 MW(DC)
Solar Power Company (SPC), a Thai developer, has plans for 34 solar plants in Isaan totalling 204 MWby the end of 2012.
The Philipines:The Renewable Energy Law was passed in December 2008. Under the law the Philippines has to double
the energy derived from Renewable Energy Sources within 10 years. In May 2009, the Department ofEnergy (DoE) published the law’s implementing rules and regulations (IRR).
A major driver is the dramatic electricity demand increase as the DoE has forecasted that 16,550 MW ofadditional capacity is needed from 2010 to 2030 to meet the population’s energy demand.
Vietnam: Red Sun Energy Co. and Ho Chi Minh City Energy Conservation Centre invested about $10 million to
build the 2,000m² factory in Duc Hoa Ha Industrial Park that will produce solar cell panels with a capac-
ity ranging from 25Wp to 175Wp (watt-peak). Energy supply from renewables (ie. wind, solar PV,
geothermal, waste-to-energy, and biomass) is expected to increase. The government has set a target
for renewable energy to account for five per cent of total electricity production in the country by 2025
Indonesia:Currently the development of renewable energy is regulated by Presidential Decree No.5 / 2006 regard-
ing the national energy policy. This decree states that the contribution of new and renewable energy in
the 2025 national primary energy mix is estimated at 17%
