The Beginning

I love it here, but Solano county is so Beautiful already. How can there be enough work here for both

of us?

Petrolia started her career on the east coast, cleaning up oil spills and teaching about oil recycling. Her friend Bilgee invited her to visit him at Lake Berryessa. Petrolia, ready for a change, packed up and headed west.

Petrolia arrived in Solano County, looking for fun, sun and meaningful work.

While visiting Bilgee at lake Berryessa, Petrolia and Bilgee talk about her plans for the future…

I’m so glad you’re here, Petrolia! I hope you'll stay for a long time!

My job at Lake Berryessa is pretty much full time. I need help in getting the used oil recycling message out to everyone in Solano County.

It is beautiful, but it takes work to keep it that way.

I think we do a good job helping Boaters, but I worry about Solano County Storm Drains. If you could help teach people how important it is to recycle their used oil, that would really help...

We need you to connect to the younger folks in the county - talk to the students and their families and teach them about how easy it is to Safely dispose of used oil and make sure our creeks stay healthy.

Hey! What's with the Cape? Are you some kind of superhero or something?

Yes. yes. I am! When I was a drop of used oil, I was in Danger of polluting my own watershed, Instead, somebody recycled me, And now it’s my Job to help make sure all used oil gets recycled.

And so I was wondering, what are you going to do with that OIL?

I'm going to see a movie with friends and I'm running late, so I'm going to dump it down the storm drain....Just this once.

The 5 quarts of oil in an average oil change will kill fish and hurt the micro-organisms that feed many of the animals that depend on the creek for habitat.

You know, oil pollution injures or kills all kinds of animals and plants, and the effects can Last a very long time.

It’s super important that everyone recycles their used oil and oil filters to keep our creeks clean!

Oh, man - I didn't know that! Wait here a minute, I'll be right back.

Using empty Milk containers and kitty litter, The Car’s used oil is kept out of the storm drain and recycled, to be used again.

The RCD told me they’re working with a lot of middle school students at the Suisun Marsh- I thought I’d see if I can work with that program in the fall, and then get involved with their Watershed Explorers program in the new Year.

This comic book was created as part of a Competitive Used Oil Grant Funding from CalRecycle. It is built on ideas developed by students in the 2014 Suisun Marsh Watershed Program. You can find their drawings and comic scripts on the Petrolia page at solanorcd.org.

Solano County has many places where you can recycle your used oil. Certified Used Oil Collection Centers pay 40¢/gallon for used oil. Most centers will take up to 5 gallons at a time. You can find a list of recycling centers on line at recycle.solanocounty.com on the Used Motor Oil Drop-Off and Bilge Pads page. You can also call the Solano County Hotline for Local Oil and Hazardous Waste: 1-800-CLEANUP
