What is SDx?
A collection of software-defined or software-enabled solutions for managing & controlling data center assets (network, storage, compute) together with those across the service provider WAN, including the provider’s edge, metro, and core networks
SDx capabilities could be applicable to a provider’s internal infrastructure and/or to its customer-facing public infrastructure

Oncoming (Bit) Torrent of the Cloud …
Cisco’s Annual Global Cloud Index (GCI) projects that by 2018:
Global data center traffic to grow 3X (or 300%)
3/4th of all data center traffic will come from cloud services
Public, private, and hybrid cloud CAGR’s: 50%, 45%, & 40%!
Cloud workloads to grow at a CAGR of +24% vs (-2%) for DCs
Traffic between DCs and end-users to reach 1.5 ZB annuall (17% of total DC traffic)

Key Trends Today … Impacting SDx
On-demand, pay-as-you-go service models – whether for the cloud (PaaS), the data center (IaaS), or the network (NaaS)
SDDCs – flexible, pooled compute, network, & storage
Emergence of elastic clouds – “pets” vs “cattle” paradigm – impacts architecture, availability, resilience, scaling, pricing
