software-defined data center case study – financial institution and vmware

DESCRIPTION
In this case study, a large financial institution engaged the VMware software-defined data center team to create a three-to-five year forward-looking strategy document for its IT department. The overriding business driver for the institution was the need for a drastic reduction in IT OpEx Costs, at least a 50% OpEx annualized cost reduction over a three-year period. This presentation explains how VMware Accelerate Advisory Services established the necessary strategy, including a look at the “cloud reference architecture,” which addressed the: application plane, control plane, infrastructure layer, and management plan.TRANSCRIPT

Primary IT Business Driver
Reduce infrastructure OpEx costsby at least 50% within 3 years.

Initial Observations
IT infrastructure overly complex, proprietary and segmented
Substantial vendor lock-in with limited best-in-class pricing
Low rate of automated workload provisioning
Ineffective, inefficient IT infrastructure organization

Greater use of automation and service-oriented software shifts
hardware-specific engineers to be more service-oriented.
Expensive and poorly scaled labor structure.
Lean silo-less org focused on design (rather than hardware

To evolve from applications on proprietary platforms to applications
on generic x86 platforms may require migration projects.
Legacy applications requiring high cost hardware and labor support.
