On Feb. 1, the WAC released its preseason rankings as voted on by the head coaches of the league’s six schools. GCU was projected to finish first, tieing with NM State in the conference standings, having received 23 points.

FIERCE PIERSON After adding six more to the win column in the GCU Invitational, head coach Ann Pierson earned her 400th career win in the team’s 7-5 victory over Rhode Island on Feb. 25.

After the Getterman Classic, Pierson reached win No.100 with its victory over Lamar to improve to 100-60 in Division I action.

She currently boasts a 118-73 record in Division I play. She led the Lopes to their best Division I season after finishing 2016 with a 35-15 record. She also led GCU to a WAC regular season championship in 2014.

WELCOME TO THE SQUAD Although the Lopes graduated two essential pieces last year, Pierson reloaded for the 2017 season by adding six freshmen. Hailey Freeman, Kama-Lei Santiago, Loriann Olson, Jordon Keeton and Megan Stevens have all seen time on the field. The Lopes also welcome Brianna Aguilar-Beaucage to the circle.

Olson sits at third on the squad with a .333 BA. She is currently 37-of-111 on the year with 7 RBI and 22 runs. In her first WAC series, Olson hit .364 with four hits and one RBI. She led GCU with a .600 BA going 3-for-6 against No. 6 Washington. Aguilar-Beaucage earned WAC Pitch-er of the Week accolades after going a perfect 3-0 with a 1.85 ERA and 12 strikeouts in three appearances in the GCU Invitational. In the Stanford Easton Classic, she finished 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA after pitching a complete game vs. Lehigh and shutting down UCONN’s offense in relief.

At UMKC, Stevens tallied four hits, with a two-run homer good for three RBI. She had two pinch-hit home runs in back to back contests against San Jose State and Rhode Island in the GCU Invitational. Against San Jose State, Stevens hit the go-ahead home run in the win. Later that day, she also hit a pinch-hit three-run homer to claim the contest against Rhode Island. Stevens started four times in the GCU Round Robin with her best outing against Santa Clara finishing with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, which included a double.

SCOUTING CSU BAKERSFIELD » Grand Canyon will meet CSU Bakersfield for the 22nd time in pro-

gram history. The Lopes have the advantage in the all-time series at 11-10 and have had the conference advantage since joining the WAC at 6-3. The Roadrunners sit at 6-25 on the year and 1-5 in WAC play with their lone win coming against Utah Valley last weekend.

» Julea Cavazos leads the team with a .293 BA (29-of-99), while Chris Hipa leads the team in homeruns (4), doubles (5) and RBI (18).

» In the circle, Summer Evans (5-10) leads the staff with a 4.35 ERA and has a b/avg of .282 while punching out 16 on the year.

» Head coach Crissy Buck-Ziegler is currently in her sixth season at CSUB and led the team to the 2016 NCAA Softball Tournament.

SIZING UP THE OPPONENT

Jordon Keeton made her GCU debut vs. Nevada, hitting a pinch-hit two-RBI triple to bring the game home for the Lopes. Keeton also saw her first appearance on defense in the Santa Clara Round Robin. In her first start, Freeman secured a two RBI single giving GCU the 5-2 lead over Creighton.

NOWLIN’S ROLLIN’ Nowlin currently sits at 15-7 and picked up her 15th win at UMKC on Friday. She went 1-1 during the series with UMKC after opening the series with a complete game two-hit shutout. The award honors the top NCAA® softball student-athletes who excel both on and off the field.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later in the season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of com-munity, classroom, character and competition.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE With a 3.670 grade-point average the Grand Canyon softball team has the highest GPA among Di-vision I Softball Programs, the National Fastpitch Association (NFCA) announced. The Lopes also had 17 student-athletes named to the Easton/NFCA Division I Scholar-Athletes team.

This marked the sixth time in program history the Lopes have earned the first place honor and the first time since 2012. This is also the first time softball has earned the honor since transiting to Division I.

SOFTBALL 2017 GAME NOTES With 17 named to the Easton/NFCA Division I Scholar-Athletes team, the Lopes surpassed last year’s group of 14. GCU’s Heaven Acquart, Bianca Boling, Jenna Coates, Madelyn Dowdle, Taylor Es-cobar, Laynee Gomez, Nikki Gonzalez, Kendsey Hill, Logan Johnston, Taylor Kaye, Hailey Maher, Nicole Newbury, Kailey Regester, Shea Smith, Sierra Smith, Mariah Valencia and Camree Wartman were all named to the scholar-athletes squad.

LOPES IN THE COMMUNITY Recently, the softball team extended their goodwill to Rocky Point, Mexico as several players trav-eled out of the country for a three-day trip to serve for the organization One Mission.

The trip was optional for all team members and the girls that decided to go spent their time building house for a family in need. To earn their home, the family had performed over 200 service hours in their Mexican community.

The GCU athletes were able to meet the family and build a relationship with them over the three days. The home was built completely by hand and every girl was able to contribute.

On the final day of the trip, the team had a chance to pray with the family and present them with a Spanish bible. Each GCU member underlined their favorite bible verse before gifting it. In addition to prayer, the family was also given the keys to their new home. The father was extremely impressed by the work ethic and great attitudes of the girls over the weekend.

GCU coordinator Kelly Schmidt accommodated the athletes throughout the trip. Schmidt has partnered with One Mission multiple times in the past and felt that both the GCU athletes and the non-profit organization benefit-ed from the experience. The entire One Mission staff was impressed with how quickly the softball team was able to complete the house and each girl felt excited and rewarded by the entire experience.

THE END OF THE BEGINNING It’s here. Grand Canyon University Athletics is nearing final completion of the mandated four-year transition process as the department jumps to full Division I status. You’ve heard the disclaimer time and time again over the last four years, but amid the current transition, the Lopes are ineligible for participation in the WAC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament.

There, you’ve heard it for the last time. Beginning in the 2017-18 year, pending a final stamp of approval from the NCAA, Grand Canyon will participate as a full-fledged member of NCAA Division I athletics, making it eligible for the WAC Tournament and NCAA Tournament in all sports.

LOPES TABBED ALL REGION SELECTIONS The GCU softball team had three student-athletes named to the 2016 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I All-West Region Team.

Pitcher Taylor Nowlin and second baseman Camree Wartman garnered second-team nods, while Nicole Newbury was named to the third-team. This marks the first time in program history that the Lopes have had multiple representatives named to the All-West Region Team.

All three Lopes set themselves apart in one of the toughest softball regions in the country. The field was determined based on overall performance and play against Top 75 RPI teams throughout the sea-son.

Wartman finished the regular season with a .392 batting average with 17 dou-bles and a .662 slugging percentage. She registered hits against all nine Top 75 RPI teams she faced. Wartman was 12-for-34 with three RBI, three doubles, two home runs and two walks against Top RPI opponents. She also garnered All-WAC First-Team Honors.

CONFERENCE EXPANDING While it will take about a year and a half to see the move in effect, the WAC announced the addition of California Baptist University to the conference on January 13, 2017. The Lancers will begin competition in 15 WAC-sanctioned sports in the 2018-19 academic year. The uni-versity continues a meteoric rise which will see it begin the transition to Division I after just five years at the Division II level. In softball, like many of its sports, CBU has found recent success at the Division II level.

SOFTBALL 2017 GAME NOTES

GCU SOFTBALL STADIUM Located on the west side of campus, this new stadium will include seating for 1,500, including cov-ered chairback seats, an expanded concourse that includes new restrooms and concession stands, and a press box equipped for radio and television broadcasts.

Dimensions of the field will remain similar, stretching 204 feet down each line and 220 feet to center and will feature a 12-foot outfield wall in center field. New home and visitor’s dugouts are also part of the project, which is scheduled to be completed in advance of the 2018 season. Phase I includes moving the current field outward to create more space for seating, the Lopes Performance Center expansion and a stadium concourse. Phase II encompasses the remainder of the project.

Student-athletes love the atmosphere while also enjoying first-class amenities. The facilities on the GCU campus are among the best in the conference and feature everything student-ath-letes need to be successful right at their fingertips.

From an on-site medical facility to the strength and conditioning area and locker room with a players’ lounge and study area, the Lopes have all the comforts of home just a short walk from student housing.

PHASE I COMPLETE Nearly 3,000 fans rolled through GCU Softball Stadium to watch the Lopes play last weekend as the softball program open the 2017 campaign to a crowed of excited visitors as 807 packed into the bleachers to see GCU take the field for the first time in the new GCU Softball Stadium.

As part of the phase I completion plan, the Lopes took the field for the first time and found them-selves on a high quality infield playing surface and an AstroTuf outfield.

The fan reaction to the new Softball Stadium was incredible as the fans packed the temporary bleachers. The new stadium hosted over 3,100 people during the three day tournament, averaging 533 per day a mark that would have ranked top 45 in the country last year among Division I’s 295 schools.

The Lopes warmed up in brand-new spacious batting cages and the pitchers began game prep in new bullpens. The team experienced their first weekend in specious dugouts, built of red brick, that provided ample space and storage for long days at the park.

The completed GCU Softball Stadium is set for its grand opening ahead of the 2018 season. The completed product will feature a press box, restrooms, concession area, and seating ac-commodations.

SOFTBALL 2017 GAME NOTES

HEAD COACH ANN PIERSON

Ann Pierson enters her 14th season guiding the Lopes softball squad in 2017. Pierson, the only head coach in the program’s history, has led GCU softball to great success on and off the field.

In 2016, GCU finished with a 35-15 record, the best mark since the team transitioned to Division I status. GCU posted the highest GPA among Divi-son I softball program in the offseason.

In 2014, Pierson had a memorable 11th season with the Lopes as she was named Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Lopes to a WAC title in just their first year of transition to the Division I level. The team finished with a 12-3 conference mark, while tallying an overall record of 27-21.

Under Pierson’s direction, six members of the 2014 squad received postseason recognition from the WAC. Included in that list was Stepha-nie Pesqueira, who was crowned WAC Pitcher of the Year for her efforts in the circle. GCU won each of its five conference series, sweeping Utah Valley and New Mexico State.

A year later, Pierson’s second squad at the Division I level posted 28 wins in 2015 and garnered a second-place finish in the WAC with a 9-6 record. During the season, she coached her 600th game at GCU.

Pierson guided the program to back-to-back Division II postseason ap-pearances in 2012 and 2013. Prior to that, GCU went to the postseason for the first time in 2010, when the Lopes had a school-record 42 wins. The program hit the 40-win mark for the a second time in 2013.

Pierson has produced four Division II All-Americans. In 2013, outfielder Kayla Henry was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Second Team and Daktronics, Inc., Honorable Mention All-America, as voted on by CoSIDA. In 2012, shortstop Kelsey Barak was a Daktronics, Inc., Honorable Mention selection. In 2010, Teddy Barry was a Daktronics, Inc., First Team All-American and in 2006 Randi Johns was named to the NCAA Independent All-America Team.

While Pierson’s program’s on-field efforts have been exemplary, the off-the-field performance is equally or more impressive. Four times un-der the veteran coach’s tenure, the Antelopes have been at the top of the NFCA Division II Top 10 All-Academic Rankings. GCU took the top spot in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2012. The program boasts 49 players who have earned NFCA All-America Scholar honors. The 2012 team registered a 3.60 team grade-point average.

Prior to coming to GCU, Pierson was the lead assistant at Arizona State for seven seasons. There, she was responsible for managing the recruitment process, initial eligibility and assisting with on-field coaching.

Pierson, formerly Ann Rowan, was a standout shortstop at ASU from 1988-91. An outstanding hitter for the Sun Devils, Pierson’s softball achievements earned her several long-standing marks in ASU’s record book, including the third-most hits in a single-sea-son with 86. A second-team All-American and first-team all-region pick in 1990, Pierson is seventh in ASU history in hits (245), tied for third in triples (11), tied for 10th in stolen bases (37), and tied for 19th in doubles (24). She earned All-Pac 10 Conference honors in 1990 and 1991. In September 2006, Pierson was inducted into the Arizona State Hall of Fame for her accomplishments as a player.

In addition to her collegiate accomplishments, Pierson was a member of three gold medal-winning national teams. She was one of 18 players chosen from a pool of 95 of the top women’s fastpitch players who competed for the coveted positions on the USA Softball National Team. Pierson earned her first gold medal as a member of the 1991 Pan American Games. Her second gold med-al came as a member of the 1993 USA National Team, which won the Intercontinental Cup in Holland. Pierson’s third gold medal performance came at the 1995 Pan American Games, where she batted .500 and scored five runs while posting a perfect fielding percentage of 1.000. A four-time Olympic Festival selection and three-time ASA All-American, Pierson also played for the 1998 national champion California Commotion team.

Pierson is a native of Tempe, Ariz., and graduated from Arizona State with a Bachelor of Science degree in therapeutic recreation in 1992. She also received her master’s degree in educational psychology from Northern Arizona in December 2006. Pierson and her husband, John Pierson, reside in Chandler, Ariz., with their daughter, Jordan Tatum, and their two bulldogs, Joie and Sophie.
