PEA is a naturally-occurring skin lipid produced in response to tissue injury and stress. PEAlevels are 30 times higher in unhealthy skin.1

Mast cells are the target of PEA. In the presence of allergens, mast cells degranulate and release histamine and other inflammatory mediators, generating the signs typically associated with allergies.

PEA downregulates mast cell degranulation and inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators (such as histamine) from mast cells.2 These actions result in a more stable skin environment in allergic dogs and cats.

    Skinbecomespruritic(itchy).

In a four-month double-blinded randomized controlled study of 57 client-owned cats, PEA-um was shown to have a significant effect on skin health. Owners also judged PEA-um to be superior to placebo in maintaining healthy skin. Tolerability was good, with only two cats experiencing non-serious side effects. The study authors concluded that PEA-um may be a valid option in the multimodal management of feline skin health.7
