WHAT IS SOCIOLOGY?

Sociology is the study of human social behavior and its origins, development, organizations, and institutions. It is a social science which uses various methods of empirical investigation and critical analysis to develop a body of knowledge about human social actions, social structure and functions.

JOBS FOR A SOCIOLOGY MAJOR Substance Abuse Counselor•Counsels and aids individuals and their families that are dealing with substance abuse problems

JOBS FOR A SOCIOLOGY MAJOR Youth Service Provider•Organizes and provides services for the youth of a community

•Areas usually include:

-after school programs

-counseling

-vocational training

-volunteer projects

-sports

-recreation

-helping ethnic minorities

JOBS FOR A SOCIOLOGY MAJOR Probation/Parole Officer•Councils juvenile or adult offenders

•Formulate a rehabilitation plan with input from the offender, legal representatives, family & other concerned persons

•Evaluate offender’s progress by making visits at their client’s home, school or work

JOBS FOR A SOCIOLOGY MAJOR Criminal Justice Counselor•Work as a part of a community renewal team focused on issues such as reducing drug activity and ensuring safe housing

•Help plan & direct juvenile and adult crime prevention projects

•Counselors work with offenders to maintain their safety, & the safety of their families

JOBS FOR A SOCIOLOGY MAJOR Recreational Therapist •Include sports, arts & other games to assist patients in developing interpersonal relationships & confidence in social settings
