• Melakukan eksplorasi atas respon individu terhadap suatu peristiwa, keadaan ataupun ide dan gagasan tertentu (personal essay). Contoh: tulisan tentang pengalaman pribadi saat menggunakan Internet.

• Mengajak pembaca untuk meyakini opini penulis dan dapat juga untuk meyakinkan pembaca agar melakukan suatu aksi tertentu (persuasive essay). Contoh: tulisan tentang pentingnya Internet.

• Menjelaskan tentang bagaimana melakukan sesuatu hal ataupun menunjukkan bagaimana sesuatu bekerja (how-to essay). Contoh: tulisan tentang bagaimana cara menggunakan Internet untuk proses belajar.

• Nonlienarity. Untuk memahami konteks informasi, segmen informasi yang disampaikan tidak selalu harus dikaitkan dengan segmen informasi lainnya

• Duplication. Informasi dapat dengan mudah diduplikasi, sehingga memudahkan dalam proses diseminasi, bahkan melalui berbagai bentuk media lainnya
