SCI’s Mission
• SCI’s nonprofit mission is to strengthen communities by connecting diverse individuals and organizations through civic engagement initiatives.
SCI’s Vision
We envision a nation where individuals are strongly connected to their neighbors and play an active role in shaping the destiny of their communities. This increase in ‘social capital’ will result in communities that are safer, healthier and more vital.
What SCI does
We provide communities with skills and tools to engage citizens to make a difference. Current serving 12 Eastern Mass. communities.

Connecting citizens to Promote youth success. Foster health & wellness. Support economic development.
Social Capital Action Plans
Youth Leadership Curriculum
Working with 9 youth councils.
Led by AmeriCorps & other adult advisors
Provide “train the trainers” and direct youth training.
213 youth demonstrated leadership skills last yr.
Adult Community Leadership
Partnering with local community groups
SCI partners with local community groups who have an interest in connecting people to address local issues.
SCI has 20 full-time AmeriCorps members placed across the region, but we are currently focusing our growth on providing training and tools for partners’ staff and volunteers.
Typically start with a project covered by local budgets; joint planning and fundraising for larger initiatives.

Web portals along with outreach strategy. Blending online & offline relationships. Regular civic “eblasts” and active social
media presence helps drive portal traffic.
Online engagement results
Over 15,000 unique monthly visitors to SCI portals in 6 communities.
60+ Dorchester orgs have reported increased participation.
75% of users say they are more civically active and ½ have met someone new in the community
Leveraging tech to address pressing needs: Haiti relief, job seekers, connecting neighbors, info re public meetings, starting emergency fuel assistance program.
