Ethnohistoryisthestudyofnativeand/ornon-Westernpeoplesfromacombinedhistoricalandanthropologicalviewpoint,usingwrittendocuments,oralliterature,materialcultureandethnographicdata.Ethnohistoryusesbothhistoricalandethnographicdataasitsfoundation.Itshistoricalmethodsandmaterialsgo beyond the standard use of books and manuscripts. Practitioners recognize the utility of maps, music,paintings, photography, folklore, oral tradition, ecology, site exploration, archaeological materials, museumcollections, enduring customs, language, and place names. It incorporates the critical use of ethnologicalconcepts and materials in the examination and use of historical source material. Axtell has describedethnohistoryasessentially,“theuseofhistoricalandethnologicalmethodstogainknowledgeofthenatureandcausesofchangeinaculturedefinedbyethnologicalconceptsandcategories”(Axtell1979).Ethnohistorytakesintoaccountthepeople’sownsenseofhoweventsareconstituted,andtheirwaysofculturallyconstructingthepast.Itisaholistic,diachronicapproachthatisoftenmostrewardingwhenitcanbejoinedtothememoriesandvoicesoflivingpeople.Thismodulewillpresentreadings,lecturesanddiscussionsabouttherelationshipofhistoryandanthropology.Topics examined include but are not limited to: microhistory; language and translation; ethnohistory andarchaeology;writingsystems;archivalresearch;workingwithimagesandmaterialobjects;andethics.

This module creatively addresses anthropological approaches to material culture and develops a criticalunderstandingofhowthingsplayapartinhumansocialrelationships.Wewillexplorehowpeoplelivethroughthings,usingthebodytotransformmaterials fromtheenvironment intoartefacts;consuminganddisplayingobjects; incorporating them into domestic activities such as house-building and home-making, even living inthem; transforming us in life cycle events such as weddings and funerals; re-membering our pasts throughtourist souvenirs, monuments or ceremonial shrines; and creating things whichmove us, whether 'magicalartefacts' or 'works of art'. Studentswill become familiarwith both key theoretical texts inmaterial culturestudiesandthevarietyofartifactsandwaysofrepresentingthemwhichhavebecomealmosticonicinmaterialculture and 'ethnographic art' (from rock art sites to heritage centres; from masks to Surrealist art; fromdomesticartifactstofolkart).
