Ethnohistoryisthestudyofnativeand/ornon-Westernpeoplesfromacombinedhistoricalandanthropologicalviewpoint,usingwrittendocuments,oralliterature,materialcultureandethnographicdata.Ethnohistoryusesbothhistoricalandethnographicdataasitsfoundation.Itshistoricalmethodsandmaterialsgo beyond the standard use of books and manuscripts. Practitioners recognize the utility of maps, music,paintings, photography, folklore, oral tradition, ecology, site exploration, archaeological materials, museumcollections, enduring customs, language, and place names. It incorporates the critical use of ethnologicalconcepts and materials in the examination and use of historical source material. Axtell has describedethnohistoryasessentially,“theuseofhistoricalandethnologicalmethodstogainknowledgeofthenatureandcausesofchangeinaculturedefinedbyethnologicalconceptsandcategories”(Axtell1979).Ethnohistorytakesintoaccountthepeople’sownsenseofhoweventsareconstituted,andtheirwaysofculturallyconstructingthepast.Itisaholistic,diachronicapproachthatisoftenmostrewardingwhenitcanbejoinedtothememoriesandvoicesoflivingpeople.Thismodulewillpresentreadings,lecturesanddiscussionsabouttherelationshipofhistoryandanthropology.Topics examined include but are not limited to: microhistory; language and translation; ethnohistory andarchaeology;writingsystems;archivalresearch;workingwithimagesandmaterialobjects;andethics.

Melanesiahas longprovidedanthropologywith someof itsmorechallengingethnographies, and stimulatedtheoretical developments regarding exchange, kinship, politics, gender and ecology. These domains will beexploredthroughadiscussionoftheaestheticsofMelanesiansociality,tackingbackandforthbetweencurrentissuesandearlierethnographies,withtheaimofapprehendingthepredicamentsofcontemporarylife.Wewillalsoconsiderthecontinuingstimulusforanthropology,anddiscussrecentmethodologicalmoveswhichmakedeliberateborrowingsfromMelanesia.OneobjectivewillbetodescribewhatatrulyMelanesiananthropologywouldlooklike.

ThismoduleformsanimportantintroductiontotheanthropologyandhistoryoftheEurasianregion.ItdrawsonRussian and Soviet ethnographies alongside more recent European and American anthropological studies,addressing the Soviet period and life post-independence. Peoples covered in thismodule are from the fiveformerSovietCentralAsianstates,alongwithgroupsfromMongolia,SouthSiberia,andXinjiang.Themoduleprovidesabroadoverviewofregionalethnographyalongsiderelevantanthropologicalthemes.These includepastoral nomadism and oasis life; socialism and post-socialism; human-environment relations and ecologicalissues;Islamandshamanism;foodandfeasting;oralepicsandpopularculture;anddomesticpractices.
