Letter from Our Executive Director

There have been many conversations in our community this year about new research on the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (or ACE) on long-term health outcomes. No one gets to grow up entirely stress-free, but the cumulative effect of stressful experiences in the early years can result in “adult” problems, like substance abuse, heart disease and even some cancers. Sometimes it seems like research is just telling you things your grandmother could have told you, but the robust study design and consistent findings about problems that show up well after a child has grown into adulthood creates a compelling call to action. We know how to support families in reducing stress and turmoil in their lives. It is time for our entire community to support these efforts.

The programs at Parenting Now! support families with a broad variety of needs to work with their strengths and values to create a healthy, happy childhood and prevent Adverse Childhood Experiences. Some families are looking to create a network of families that share their parenting approaches in creating a rich and happy childhood for their kids. Others are looking to get support for managing the stress of their lives and parenting differently than the way they were raised.

Board of Directors 2014-2015 Parenting Now! DonorsParenting Now! is proud to acknowledge the following individual donors whose gifts of $500 or more since July 2014 have strengthened our parenting programs.

The common goal for all these parents is that they want the best for their children. They want to create a childhood experience where their children are ready to start school and thrive. They are excited about learning how to maximize the potential in their child and create close, loving relationships that last a life time.

On behalf of Parenting Now!, I’d like to thank our supporters who have responded to this call to action. By supporting our families, they join us in building a healthy, thriving community. Reducing ACE is visionary work - and very possible. I invite you to join us.

Lynne Swartz, Executive Director

Creating Support and Success Across GenerationsA young woman, “Alice,” from Oakridge learned she was pregnant when she was 17. Her family had history of heavy drug involvement. Alice had no support.

Alice learned about our Program for Young Parents and signed herself up. She would drive down from Oakridge to Eugene to attend groups. She was able to graduate from high school, a first for her family. She went on to get her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Oregon.

Alice continued her relationship with Parenting Now! and joined our First Three Years groups when she had her second and third children.

Alice moved back to Oakridge to give back her community and opened a successful community center.

“If it wasn’t for programs like [the Program for Young Parents], I would not have been able to make it as far as I have today. I graduated from high school on time, and I am now finishing my associate degree at Lane Community College.”
