Prof. Dr. Madhavi Ramachandran, Prof. Dr. Satish .G.Prabhu, Prof. Dr.Raju Antony, Vice-Principals felicitated the new College Union Chairman & members. Mr. Asheed Menon, Former Chairman gave Valedictory speech & handed over his charge to the new Chair man Mr. Afsal Ummer. Our new Chairman, thanked his colleagues for having electing him as the chairman, and requested their co-operation for the effective functioning of the Union. This was followed by the cultural event “Tejesvi” which brought out the hidden talents of our budding doctors. Welcome to our New Grama Panchayat Members. . SNIMS arranged a medicalamp at Velankanny Matha School Hall, Munambam. Dr Sreejitharom Dept of Medicine &Dr. Suhail from Paediatrics & four interns ofNIMS Hospital examined about 500people and majority werehildren. Free Medicines were distributed to 254 patients.Prof Dr Raju

Antony, Vice-Principal & HOD, Dept of Community Medicine led the

wareness session on Life style Diseases.

SNIMS jointly with Prathyasha Pain & Palliative Care CentreParavur arranged a Mini Executive Health Check up & Awareness

Class at the Kizhekkepram IMA Hall .Doctors from Dept of GeneralMedicine participated in the Camp. There were facilities of medicalheck up, lab check up & vision checking at the camp.Free medicines

were distributed to more than 80 patients.

On 12-11-2015, By the Dept. Of Pathology. Dr. Shweta Jose,Asst. Prof spoke on the subject “Diagnostic Approach to a case ofThrombocytopenia” . Prof.Dr.B.Sumangala, Prof & HOD, Dept. Of

athology chaired the session and this was followed by an activenteractive session.

SNIMS with L.F.Hospital , Angamaly jointly arranged anInternational Conference on Snake Bite at Kochi International AirportConvention Centre on 21st &22nd November 2015.Haematologists&Physicians from Asian countries & various parts of India

participated in the event. It is alarming that more than 50000 people diedue to snake bite in India per year. Still this is not given due importanceand there is no National Programme for control of Snake Bite in India.

SNIMS observed Children's Day under patronage of Dept. ofPaediatrics. Drawing & Painting Competition for Children of age 4-9years was conducted at the College Auditorium on 14-11-2015 at 9.30am.

Principal Prof.Dr M.J.John inaugurated the function. Mr. A.V. Subramanian, Finance Controller felicitated at the occasion quotingideal poems for the occasion. About 100 children participated in thecompetition. It was nice to see some children dressed like Chachaji. Allchildren were given prizes.

Dr.P.Golalakrishnan, Associate Prof., Dept of Community Medicinerepresented SNIMS at the meeting. Among the Global Burden ofTuberculosis 23% is shared by India. The socio economic factors & itsimpact on the development of Tuberculosis was high- lighted at themeeting. Tuberculosis still continues to be a social disease withmedical aspects.

SNIMS jointly with Thiruonam Residents Associationarranged awareness class at Mahilapadi Anganwadi Hall,Kaitharam,N.Paravr to the members of the Residents Association. The

programme was inaugurated by Adv. V.D.Satheesan, M.L.A ofParavur.Dr MP Krishnan Nair of Dept of Community Medicine,SNIMS led the session. The class was part of the anniversary

celebrations of this residents Association.

SNIMS jointly with Kuttipuzha kovattu residents associationorganised a meeting of Elderly “Sayam Sandhya” at the Kuttipuzha

NSS Hall.Mr. P.Rajeev, President of the association presided over thefunction .About 45 Senior citizens were present and they werehonoured at this occasion.

SNIMS participates in WHO external monitoring of IndradhanushMission.

Dr.Saira, Surveillance Medical Officer of the Mission led anOrientation Programme for Faculties & Interns of Dept. of CommunityMedicine on 6-11-2015 at SNIMS. Interns had field training in WHOExternal Monitoring of Mission Indradhanush by participating in theField Survey during 7-18th November, 2015.The Survey was to findout partly and unimmunised children of age groups 0-2 and 2-5 years.They had surveyed at Moothakunnam, Karimaalur, Alanghad,Varapuzha, Nedumbhassery, & Panaikulam. 125 children of age group0 to 2 years were surveyed, of which 5 were unimmunised and 3 werepartly immunised. Of the 3 partly immunised 2 were migrants. Theywill be brought under the Mission Indradhanush total ImmunisationDrive .There was a review meeting of the results of the survey atSNIMS on 18-11-2015, in which Dr Saira and our Interns analysed theurvey data and draft report was prepared.

This survey is planned to be continued in December 2015 and January2016 at different localities of Ernakulam district.

“Nirmalabhavan” at Karumalloor: . Medical checkup was done forhose inmates who presented with various symptoms . The medicaltudents distributed eatables and interacted with them. This interaction

elived the mental agony of the inmates and the students in turnearned the medical and social problems of the aged.

Theme- 2014-2016: Healthy living starts at breakfastThe theme of World Diabetes Day, from 2014 to 2016 will be

healthy living and diabetes and this year, there's a focus on starting eachday right by having a healthy breakfast. A healthy breakfast should help

blood sugar levels from getting too high and should keep you fullthrough the morning. Whilst cereal and toast may be cheap, theseoptions typically raise blood sugar levels rapidly and may leave youhungry again before lunch .

Every year World AIDS Day events take place across thecountry to raise awareness and show support for people living withHIV. “Getting to Zero” is the theme selected by the World AIDSCampaign (WAC) to commemorate World AIDS Day on 1st December.The new theme, that will be used until 2015, echoes the UNAIDSvision of achieving “Zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination.Zero AIDS-related deaths.”

We, conducted Quiz & debate program on 28/11/2015.InternsDr Anjana K S, Dr. Gifty Zacharias, Dr.Farzana& Dr.Nikhila organisedthe Quiz. Medical students of 2012 &2013 batches (Krishna Prasad,Vivek Vijayan, Mariet Joseph, Jincy, Emmanuel Paul, Ashima RChandran, Anusha Renjith, Aishwarya, Aqueel Usman, Pritish Pratap,Ajith Thankachan, Abi Antony A.L) participated. The topic forDebate was “creating an AIDS free generation an achievable goal”?

Miss Susmitha Joshi, Medical student of 2012 batch got the1st prize in poster making competition.

SNIMS plans to conduct Awareness Class for the localresidents at PHC Kunnukara, a Rally from Chalakka Junction toSNIMS in which the Doctors, staff & students of SNIMS will be

participating, skit & awareness class on AIDS, the ThursdayAcademic meeting with the departments of General Medicine,Paediatrics, Gynaecology & Community Medicine presenting thecurrent scenario of AIDS.

National Cancer Awareness Day was observed across the country on November 7." It is high time we went into combative mode against thisdisease."

under-five child mortality worldwide, 2% of which are newborns” –UNICEF..

In India, National Epilepsy Day is observed annually onNovember 17, to create awareness about the spread of epilepsy in theountry. 'Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that affects about 50

million of the population worldwide. One out of every 100 to 200people in India, suffer from epilepsy.'

World COPD Day 2015 will take place on Wednesday,November 18 around the theme “It's Not Too Late.” This positivemessage was chosen to emphasize the meaningful actions people canake to improve their respiratory health, at any stage before or after a

COPD diagnosis. If you care for people with COPD, it's not too late tohelp your patients breathe better.

Anti-Obesity Day is an international observance held onNovember 26. The event aims to raise awareness of obesity as a publichealth hazard. World Health Organization formally recognized obesityas a global epidemic. Obesity rates are raising most dramatically inurban settings.. The campaign focused on promoting the developmentof good lifestyle habits to prevent obesity and stay fit and healthy. Anti-Obesity Day events include mass counselling sessions, health camps,alk shows with leading health experts, media campaigns, educationalvents etc.

Every year in India 1.2 million infants die before completingheir first four weeks of life. There is a lot of work to be done inmproving “newborn health” in India .If care givers, parents,

government and private sector, and non governmental agencies workogether; this death rate can be reduced considerably .

November is officially Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Thisall started as Lung Cancer Awareness Day. As the lung cancercommunity and the lung cancer movement grew, the awarenessactivities increased and grew into Lung Cancer Awareness Month.Health Tit-Bits

South India's first health and quarantine station wascommissioned at Air port, Kochi by The Director General of HealthServices Dr. Jagdish Prasad. The Centre for vaccination against YellowFever will commence operating at this station soon. The facility had

been set up in the wake of fears of spread of yellow fever, which is not present in India at present. Passengers who are suspected to beharbouring the virus of the disease will be kept under observation at thestation (quarantine). Up to now, such passengers were sent to Delhi forobservation.
