The Trump Scheme (Bas in Eireann) A long time ago - and a very long time it was - this country was in a state of economic paralysis. Strikes were an everyday occurrence. The country was rapidly going down the tubes. The mother-f ixated, ex-

auctioneer Taoiseach F.X Ryan developed severe panic attacks and decamped f rom government build-ings to the safety of his home under the care of his doting if demented mammy. His minister for foreign affairs returns f rom New York with a plan to turn the entire west of Ire-land into one large cemetery to inter the dead of New York, London, and Paris, the brainchild of a young Manhattan property developer called Donald Trump. In the ensu-ing scramble, the corrupt politicians attempt to double-cross one anoth-er, leaving Taoiseach Ryan on top of the greasy pole, with the scheme a huge success.

The play is f reely adapted f rom Brian Friel’s 1969 satire The Mundy Scheme, itself mildly pro-phetic of the Celtic Tiger years.

.

The Trump Scheme will be at Sneem Community Centre on Thursday, Friday and Saturday 19 to 21 July. Curtain up at 9 PM sharp. Pictured left is Jim Feeney as Taoiseach F.X Ryan

Sneem Tidy Towns The village is looking fabulous, thank you to all those who painted and are water-ing away in this lovely weather. Keep up the good work on litter picking and if anyone needs a copy of the “What to do with your waste” info, please contact the Resource Centre.

Some tips for conserving water: Use a bucket or basin to catch water while waiting for the shower to heat up, use this for watering your plants. You can also use your washing up water. Fill up plastic bottles and place them in your toilet cisterns to reduce the amount of water you use each f lush.

Actions to help Pollinators - : At the beginning of the summer, we put up some bee ho-tels on the shed in the Garden of the Senses to provide shelter for solitary bees. We are delighted to see some bees have moved in and many of the entrances to the holes are now sealed with wax. Well done to Yorkie who patiently drilled all the different sizes holes!

Sneem Development Co-operative

If you are looking for a house, we are looking for you! Sneem Development Co-operative has grave concerns regarding lack of hous-ing for all year round rental accommodation and also social housing in our beautiful village. We need all of the community to come on board and help us lobby the County Council to put in place a plan for our future. The very important part of this pro-ject is that there needs to be more names put on the County Council Housing list. The application can be daunting but we are here to help in a conf idential and clear way. We are looking at the bigger picture here, we know that there are young families forced to live elsewhere because of the lack of housing, this is a serious matter, as it will have a ‘domino’ effect on the village’s facilities. If you are interested in our village’s sustainability and are looking to rent and/or seek a social house in Sneem, please contact us. We are here to help. Sneem Housing Committee, Sneem Development Co-Operative. Contact: Julie Lee Knightly, Joe Murphy, Vincent O’Leary.

Sneem Men’s Shed

Topline Competition

Last month’s article was dominated by a description of the Shed’s submission to the Topline Competition. At the time of submission of the article to the Community Notice Board we had not heard if the work had been shortlisted. In the event, the art work was shortlisted – one of 45 f rom over 400 Men’s sheds in Ireland. Judging was at Belvedere House and Gardens, Mullingar and the project was taken there by Claus Riepe and Ronnie O’ Reilly. Our submission excited a great deal of interest with coverage in the Kerry Newspapers and featuring on the Irish Men’s Shed Association website. We didn’t make the last two but the experience was a great one for everyone.

Bird and Bat Boxes

As the Shed returns to normal and the work in the building around us sub-sides, we are turning our attention once more to bird nesting boxes. As a group we think that properly designed bird nesting boxes and bat roosting boxes are a key to biodiversity in our area. We now have researched hun-dreds of designs and built simple rustic boxes, high quality boxes, very large boxes for barn owls and various bat roosting boxes. We are now gearing up to make them to order. Contact us if you need them for your garden or farm. We are proud of our work and have now introduced branding iron to mark our work. Pictured right is Claus with slate roof bird nesting boxes and below are Barn owl nesting boxes.

Digital Hub

The Sneem Men’s Shed is delighted to witness the f inal completion of the Sneem Digital Hub in the f ront of the Ballroom. Once complete we hope to see the electrical systems reconnected so we can continue to develop our activi-ties for an older generation. We wish the Digital Hub well and will continue to give it our support.

Summer Meeting Times

During the summer, the Shed meets at the Old Ballroom at 8 00 pm on a Mon-day night with a meeting at the same time on Thursday night. Drop in and see what we do, have a cup of tea with us, tell us your story!

Blackwater News

Blackwater Women's Group are representing Kerry in the 'Wellbeing' category in the Pride of Place Awards 2018. Judging took place in Blackwater on Thursday 5th of July. The elected officers of Blackwater Women's Group are pictured here with the judges: L-R; Majella O'Sullivan, Julie Creedon, Josephine O'Neill, Maire-ad Robinson, Marie O'Connell, Judges Tom & Alison Dowling , Mary Doyle, Mary O'Neill & Mary Declan O'Neill. Photo by Mary O'Leary.

Pride in Blackwater Last Thursday the sun shone in Blackwater when the Blackwater Women's Group welcomed the judges f rom the Pride of Place Competition to view their work and achievements over the past 17 years. Flowers, f lags and bunting along with bal-loons gave a festive air to the proceedings. The whole community turned out to welcome their prestigious guests, even Big Bertha made a guest appearance along with generations of families and local musicians. The Blackwater Women's Group have been nominated by Kerry County Council to represent Kerry in the Community Wellbeing category at this year's awards. Following a brief history of the seventeen years of the group's activities and events, a presentation detailing some highlights and a short f ilm documenting the traditional farming methods, the judges enjoyed a bus tour of the area. As original drama is a popular part of the group's activities, a special comedy production entitled "Pride and Preparations" added a degree of hilarity to the day. There was photographic exhibition in the hall and display boards covered with pictures of the Blackwater Women's Group activi-ties, classes and drama productions along with pictures of Templenoe's win in the All Ireland Junior Competition. With the judges suitably impressed, the Blackwater community can rest assured that they did themselves proud! Winners of the all-island awards will be announced at a gala dinner to be held in Cork in November.

School tour to Derrynane: We had a super school tour to Derrynane which included a tour of Derrynane House, walking the beach and awesome activities at Derrynane Seasports.

Volvo Ocean Race Champions for the Sea

Mairead f rom Sea Synergy, Waterville, presented awards to the pupils because they complet-ed The Volvo Ocean Race Sus-tainability Education Programme and are now Champions for the Sea. The programme helped us dis-cover the excitement of sailing through the Volvo Ocean Race, the importance of the ocean and how ocean plastic pollution is damaging our blue planet. It also showed us ways to combat ocean plastic pollution and how each of us can make a difference by becoming Volvo Ocean Race Champions for the Sea! There are four topics: 1. What is the Volvo Ocean Race? 2. What is Ocean Plastic Pollution? 3. How to reduce plas-tic pollution 4. My Positive Plastic Footprint

Royal Visit: The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall visited Derrynane House on Friday, the 15th of June 2018. It was a memorable and exciting experience. Michael Donnelly, photographer, captured this photo of the Tahilla group who were invited to talk to the royal guests about their work on “Turning the Tide on Plastic” and their f loat in the St. Patrick's Day parade. The pupils were interviewed by TV3 too. It was great to meet with VOR sailor, Dami-an Foxhall, who comes f rom Derrynane and has competed in many round the world races.

Tahilla National School 50th Anniversary Pictured right are the pupils modelling their new t-shirts in preparation for the 50th cele-brations.

The celebrations, to mark 50 years of Tahilla National School, which took place on the evening of June 16th, were a great success and very memorable. It was an honour to enjoy the company of past and present pupils and staff and especially

pupils and staff f rom the early days of the school. A special seat was placed near the main entrance to commemorate the occasion and to remember all who have attended the school.

After enjoying the beautiful grounds and inspecting the newly created seating ar-ea, the guests assembled in the hall where they were welcomed and given the historical background to the occasion. Following on f rom this, the present pupils entertained the guests with a lively repertoire which included songs, dance and instrumental music comprising of group and solo performances. There was great audience participation for well known favourites like Yellow Submarine, McNama-ra’s Band, Golden Jubilee etc. It was a truly enjoyable performance. The pupils wore their specially designed t-shirts and were delighted to entertain the guests af ter weeks of practice. Refreshments were served in one of the classrooms and the honour of cutting the cake was given to LiQin Hourihan, our 6th class pupil who was about to graduate.

The other classroom walls were covered in photographs, and there were many old albums on display. Guests examined photocopies of old roll books and regis-ters, and there were slideshows of photos showing in all rooms. In the hall, The Singing Jarvey struck up his tunes and the dancing started! And so the night went on with stories, memories etc. The children were having fun and games outdoors. The mass on Sunday morning concluded the celebrations and the marking of 50 years of Tahilla National School.

The Board of Management wish to express their sincere gratitude to everyone who helped mark this milestone and make the celebrations a great success. Go raibh mile maith agaibh go léir.

Thursday 19th July 8pm “The Man in the Woman's Shoes”

A one man show written and performed by Mikel Murf i. Set in October 1978 - Pope John Paul the First is not long dead, autumn is closing in and Pat Farnon has ‘some business’ to do in town. The show was originally created with Sligo County Council Arts Service and The Hawk’s Well Theatre, Sligo as part of the Bealtaine Festival 2012. In 2015 it toured to Manhattan and Philadelphia as well as a sell-out, three week run at the Abbey Theatre on the Peacock stage in Dublin. In 2016 it returned to NYC and also played to full houses over three weeks at the Tricycle Theatre in London. Tickets €18/€16 Concessions
