From medieval times to the end of the 19th century, the arrival of falconry parties to an area were announced well in advance. Invites were extended to local communities to partake in the day’s sport of f lying hawks and falcons and afterwards in the evening celebrations. There were a number of reasons for heralding this arrival; the f irst was to give warning to local communities not to be alarmed if they saw strange folk in peculiar outf its running across f ields swinging bits of leather around their heads trying to entice their wayward birds back. Another important reason was to enlist the help of locals to engage with the falconry party, show them around the area and per-haps help recover a lost bird. Young folk were employed to stand watch on nearby hills and advantage points to see where birds f lew off to. A lost bird could ruin a day’s sport so it was critical to have sharp eyes keeping watch. Nowadays falcon-ers use transmitters on their birds so losing them is less of an issue but the in-volvement with the local community is still as important as it has always been. In keeping with this tradition, the Irish Hawking Club are pleased to notify the com-munity of Sneem, that f rom Sunday 13th to Thursday 17th November, falconers f rom up to 60 counties across the globe will arrive in Sneem village. This event coincides with World Falconry Day on Wednesday November 16th where falconers f rom the steppes of Mongolia to the Pampas of Brazil will descend on the village in traditional dress to engage with the community and cele-brate the date that Falconry was inscribed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Falconry party will leave Sneem Hotel to arrive in North Square for 11am on Wednesday 16th November. There will also be a number of talks during the week at Sneem Hotel and all are welcome to attend. The talks (outlined below) begin at 7.30pm on Tuesday 15th November and admission is f ree. Kenmare and District Gardening Club Thursday the 3rd November saw the Club crisscrossing all over the island of Ire-land in a whirlwind tour of interesting sights and gardens. We had an excellent guide in the person of Shirley Lanigan and no-one could be better qualif ied than herself . She has been writing since college and for The Irish Garden since 2001. Most people will be familiar with her excellent write-ups on people’s home gardens and over the past 2 years she has been travelling around photographing not only mature gardens large and small but with an eye for the unusual scenes such as cows swimming in the sea, goats on guard at a f ront door and a terrapin sanctuary to mention but a few. Already the author of two books all this effort has been in aid of her third book which is due to be published in April 2017. It was a most interesting evening.

Our next meeting will be our Christmas party on Thursday, 1st December and will be for members only. For those who were not at the November meeting, please contact Geraldine – 086 3935965 - for details, venue and directions. Look for-ward to seeing you all there.

The Club had a tremendous day in Beaufort on Sunday 30th October play-ing Tuosist and securing promotion to Division 4 next year. The final score was Sneem/Derrynane 0-13 Tuosist 1-07. Our football season came to an emphatic end last Saturday 5th November as our lads were well beaten by a very strong St Michaels/Foilmore team in the South Kerry championship. A well-earned break for the footballers is now in order and they will no doubt come back ready for our 2017 campaign in division 4. We wish Brendan Teahan and Kevin O'Sullivan speedy recov-eries from injuries sustained on the field over the last 2 weeks.

Writer’s CornerWriter’s CornerWriter’s CornerWriter’s Corner

Welcome to Writer’s Corner. We plan to publish poems (maximum 40 lines) and short stories (maximum 1500 words) written by our local community and neigh-bours. We are looking for contributions f rom adults, young-adults (please state age) and children (please state age) which, if chosen, will be published in our monthly Sneem Community Notice Board newsletter. If you would like to submit a creation of your own for consideration, please email it to [email protected].

This month’s story was written by June Hunter and previously published in Mash Stories.

The Woman Who Mistook Her Husband for a Chip Why is there a chip slumped in that chair? And why is it wearing a blue peaked cap? Ah yes! Earlier I was at the kitchen table, working out our taxes, adding all the numbers, writing them down, checking invoices f rom paint shops, garages, hardware stores, hotels and oh so many restaurants, same as I’ve done every year. Then I heard the postman and went to col-

lect the post. I wasn’t excited about getting anything interesting. Nobody sends letters anymore. But today there was a bright pink envelope. Quite bulky. I took it to the kitchen, got a knife f rom the sharp knife rack next to the microwave and slit it open. Inside I found a whole lot of photos. Two naked people in every one. The woman was not familiar at all, but the man I recognised immediately.

Then I saw the chip coming through the door. I was starving, remembering all the plates of food listed on those dockets and that chip looked so tasty that I wanted to pop it into my mouth, but it was too large. So, when it came up behind me, I took the knife and tried to cut it smaller, only to realise that it was a strange chip that contained its own tomato sauce. A bit like those sausages with a cheese f illing. When you cut into them the cheese just squirts right out. Delicious. Well, I’m not partial to tomato sauce. From an early age I’ve loved fish and chips with oodles of salt and vinegar and, maybe, a large pickled onion on the side. So, having this particular chip stagger onto the kitchen chair, oozing tomato sauce all over the f loor, was quite off-putting.

I got the mop and bucket f rom the cupboard under the stairs. (So useful, that cupboard. Amazing storage space.) But my efforts were useless. I was slipping and sliding all over the show and when I walked through the house and up the stairs to the hotpress to get some towels, I left red footprints all over the car-pet. Mind you, I’ve always hated those carpets. So ugly. If they were ruined I might be able to put in an insurance claim. So I took off my shoes and, barefoot-ed, slid around some more in the tomato sauce; then did a little dance around the lounge.

I’ll need help moving that chip. It’s so big! I’ll go and ask the man next door. He’s a burly fellow, a carpenter by trade, and he should be home by now.
