What does Lars Ulrich need ina snare drum? He needs asnare drum that’s powerfulenough to cut throughMetallica’s walls of amplifiedsound, and then some. So ifskull busting lethality is whatyou need in a snare, checkingout one of Lars’ Ulrich twosignature snare drums is agood place to start.

But suppose you need some-thing a little less explosive. With Tama’s vast array of snare sizes andshells–nearly 50 different drums–it might seemlike you could spend forever finding the drum that’sright for you. Where do you start?

Right here!

This compact brochure makes finding the rightsnare drum a lot simpler. Instead of just bombardingyou with an array of dazzling drums (which is cool, but it does lengthen the decision making process),Snare Drum Concepts lets you see each drum’splace in the sonic spectrum. So if you’re looking fora darker snare with fast response, you can narrowyour search to a sane number.

Naturally, the final choice won’t be made by thewords and pictures in these pages. The finalchoice will be made by your ears. But you alwayshave to start somewhere–and somewhere inthese pages are the sounds you’ve been searchingfor. So what are you waiting for?

New designed strainers & butts:MUS80A/B &MCS70A/BCylinder driven mechanismprovides accurate and sensitivesettings. Die-cast parts and6mm diameter screws providesuperior durability. Quiet andstable, even in the off-position.

MUS80A Lever Action StrainerAccurate tension hold – Keep’sgrip even at low tension or atmax tension. On many strain-ers, as you move the controltowards the on-position, thetension increases, but thenactually lowers slightly as theon-position clicks in. On theMUS80A, the on-position locksin highest tension so lessreadjustments are required.

MUS80BAdjustable Butt PlateDetachable base – noneed to remove snappysnares from plate whenchanging bottom head.

MCS70APush/Pull ActionStrainerKeeps grip, evenat low tension.

This G-Maple snare is right up therewith the bell brass, my favorite Tamasnare drum. Big sound, but it still cutsthrough. It’s much more articulatethan I expected–there’s no delay inhow the snares respond, which youget with a lot of larger snare drums.Tama’s quality has always had a kindof custom shop feel to it. Now they’vekicked it up many notches.”

“Big sound, but it still cuts through.”

Page 5: Snare Drum Concepts

This is a very live sounding drum! It’spunchy cranked up high or tuned low,and it articulates well at soft volumes.I usually use a die-cast hoop on top, inparticular for rim shots. But on thissnare, the rim shots came out wellwith the flanged hoop. The drumsounds good!”

“Live and Punchy...High or Low.”

Tama's famous 3mm thick bell brass snarefitted with matching bell brass hoops is thesnare by which all others are judged.Combines unbelievable power and penetra-tion with dynamic range and sensitivity.

copper (dark and solid) aluminum (sharp and solid)(overwhelming power, extraordinary sensitivity)

Page 7: Snare Drum Concepts

Nice overtones! This drum is crisp andarticulate. Sensitive, but with the ballsof brass. If you do a nice press roll, it’sreally responsive. When I cranked itup, it definitely cut.”

(metal power, softer tone)

Page 8: Snare Drum Concepts

This is a really cool little drum. There’sa wide range of tonality. You can playon it really lightly and still hear thesnares perfectly–you don’t get thattom-tom sound where the drum isn’tlighting the snares up.”
