Volunteer Appreciation Coffee Hour Thanks to all the volunteers who were able to attend our February 12th meeting at Lu & Bill Salisbury’s house to review how SNAP has been growing and ways we are trying to develop our efforts to enhance the needs of our community. The following items were discussed: 1. Review of the Home & Garden success this year. 2. Stats that showed the growth in needed services. 3. A Committee for strategic planning and re-structuring of

our organization to meet the demands of our aging residents and help us run more efficiently by splitting the workload with more volunteers. Looking for volunteers who can commit as committee leaders.

4. Starting an Ambassador Program that will have volunteers more actively involved with clients within their own HOA.

5. Review of RideScheduler with any issues or problems experienced.

6. Upcoming Programs 7. Senior Facility Tours If there are areas in which you want to be more involved, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Our volunteers make us successful in reaching the client base – we can’t do this without you!

Senior Facility Tours Return Due to overwhelming requests, SNAP will continue the Senior Facility Tours in October and November.

October 17th – Elmcroft Assisted Living, Starfish Care Home, Broadway Proper (RSVP by 9/20/17) November 7th – Mountain View Retirement Village (RSVP by 10/25/17) November 14th – The Fountains at La Cholla and a special visit with Bill Zachau from Watermark Retirement Communities about The Hacienda at the Canyon - Sabino and River Roads (RSVP by 10/25/17) Following each tour, we return to LCF for a short group discussion. Please call the SNAPLine at 437-9556 or email [email protected] to reserve your space. 2017 Walk to End Alzheimer’s With so many of our families, friends and neighbors suffering from this horrible disease, last year SNAP joined nearly 3,000+ people in the Tucson Walk to End Alzheimer's®. SNAP members raised nearly $3,000 for research and local programing. We will be forming a team through the Alzheimer’s Association to walk again October 21st at Reid Park. More information to come on how to sign up for our team!

Frailty Syndrome

Frailty is not a normal part of aging. However, it is a common syndrome associated with persons aged sixty-five and above, and is often linked with functional and/or cognitive decline. The Frailty Syndrome becomes even more prevalent after age eighty and may negatively impact adverse health events such as falls, hospitalizations and premature death. Frailty is more common in older women and in persons with lower levels of education and socioeconomic status, but has no specific boundaries. Research* shows that frailty may be preventable and that it is definitely treatable. Using the self-screening mnemonic questionnaire below means that all of us can benefit from a simple assessment of our own frailty status. F = Fatigue: Are you easily and frequently tired? R = Resistance: Do you have difficulty climbing up one flight of steps? A = Aerobic: Are you unable to walk at least one block? I = Illness: Do you have more than five illnesses? L = Loss of weight: Have you (unintentionally) lost more than 5 % of your body weight in the past six months or more than ten pounds in the past year? If you answered “yes” to three or more of the above questions, you may want to consider having a conversation with your primary care physician about lifestyle changes that can help reverse frailty. One or more “yes” responses indicates “pre-frail status” and is an excellent reason to begin improving your quality of life and health now. Managing the spectrum of frailty requires adherence to the following self-imposed regimes: 1. Regular exercise and activities to improve muscular strength,

balance and aerobic function, or physical therapy for those unable to begin an exercise program on their own

2. Balanced nutritional intake and protein supplementation to promote health and combat weight loss

3. Increased intake of Vitamin D for bone health and reduced risk of fractures

4. Elimination of unnecessary medications—but not without consultation with your healthcare providers

5. Socialization and community engagement to combat isolation and depression

Participating in SNAP programs and activities may well help keep “frailty wolves” from the door as we continue to age in place in our own homes and communities. (*Adapted from Linda Fried/Johns Hopkins Frailty Criteria) The UA Center on Aging is conducting a study on the role of physical activity in avoiding falls and remaining resilient as we age. If you have had at least one fall within the past six months and wish to participate in the study ($50. compensation provided), please call Tiny Read at 907-6780 for more details.

Hats Off to SNAP!

In April, SNAP was recognized by the Tucson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution as its 2017 Community Program of the Year. Nomination for this

As a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, SNAP relies on charitable contributions from individuals and businesses to offset expenses we incur helping our neighbors live at home and to fund special projects. Gifts made to SNAP are fully tax deductible as allowed by law. Your support of SNAP can take many forms: checks, cash, stock, bequests, memorial gifts, in-kind donations, special project or event contributions and gifts of your time and talent. Please call 437-9556 to discuss any of these opportunities with a SNAP representative.

Who can use SNAP? Any resident 55 years old and over in the SNAP service area. Think of SNAP following discharge from a hospital or rehab facility, when you are ill, when respite is needed for a family member, if you feel alone or isolated or have a long-term disability. What is the time commitment for volunteering with SNAP? There are no minimum hours of service required and SNAP welcomes winter visitors and part time residents. Please call 437-9556 for an application and more information. SNAP needs you!

“Like” SNAP on Facebook!

SNAP is now on Facebook. SNAP will begin using Facebook as an additional method of communicating with our clients, volunteers and supporters. Facebook will compliment, not replace, all other SNAP mailings and e-mails. SNAP’s Facebook page will offer the following: • SNAP program updates • Pertinent articles and other programs of interest • Links to resources for managing the aging

process “Like” SNAP on Facebook and join “neighbors helping neighbors” manage life.

Special Thanks to the Sunrise Mountain Ridge HOA for partnering with SNAP to improve clubhouse and ramada acoustics for future HOA and SNAP events. A new outside speaker and wireless microphone will especially benefit those with hearing loss. Don’t forget Lunch Bunch… It’s a great way to stay cool, meet new neighbors, make new friends and enjoy a giggle or two. We meet at the Sunrise Mountain Ridge clubhouse (6940 E. Loma del Bribon) on the last Wednesday of each month from 11:30 to 1 pm. Bring your own brown bag lunch and enjoy dessert and a beverage on the house on June 28th, July 26th, August 30th and September 27th.
