SMITH OUT TO CONQUER>WORLD= WITH ARROGATE

by Joe Bianca

In May of 2005, Mike Smith piloted a gray colt by one of his

beloved former mounts to a 50-1 upset in the GI Kentucky

Derby. Giacomo (Holy Bull) represented the jockey=s first career

win in the Run for the Roses, and it should have been the

springboard to new heights of success for the New Mexico

native. Instead, the Derby score was an outlier during the

toughest period for Smith=s business since he left Canterbury

Downs to ride on racing=s biggest stages in 1989.

AI more or less did it to myself,@ Smith said of the lull in his

career. AI thought, >well I=ll just hang out in Kentucky for a little

bit,= and thought I=d ease my way back east for a little while.@

Smith, who moved to California in 2000 after riding in New

York for the better part of a decade, returned to the Big Apple

and rode just 81 winners in 2005, a total that was tied for 250th

in the country.

It was a conversation with Giacomo=s co-owner, Jerry Moss,

that got Smith=s career back on a fast track.

Versatile Grade I winner Midnight Storm (Pioneerof the Nile) will run in the GI Santa

Anita H. next Saturday, rather than wait for the G1 Dubai World Cup Mar. 25, trainer

Phil D'Amato told the Santa Anita press department Thursday. "We're running in the

Big 'Cap," the conditioner confirmed. "We made the decision yesterday for sure. The

horse is going well and depending on weather, he could breeze Sunday or Monday."Benoit Photo

Arrogate all alone in his Travers romp

Jamie Coulter

Mike Smith cont. from p1

AI was given the opportunity to come back and ride a horse in

California and in doing so, I went out to dinner that night with

John Shirreffs and Mr. Moss,@ Smith recalled. AMr. Moss said,

>What are you doing out there? Why don=t you just come back

and ride all my horses?= That was my opportunity. I literally went

home, I packed, and I was back in California two days later. Then

things just took off. I got back in town, put my nose to the

grindstone and have kept it there ever since.@

Smith officially staked his return to racing=s upper echelon with

another Moss charge, four-time Eclipse Award winner Zenyatta

(Street Cry {Ire}), and he has been the regular rider of fellow

champions Shared Belief (Candy Ride {Arg}) and Songbird

(Medaglia d=Oro) in recent years. But it=s his partnership with

another gray colt by another one of his beloved former mounts

that has the potential to take the 51-year-old Smith=s career to

its highest altitude yet.

>TDN Rising Star= Arrogate (Unbridled=s Song), a $560,000

Keeneland September yearling purchase by Juddmonte Farms,

missed all of his 2-year-old season, but captured three of his first

four starts as a sophomore, signaling considerable promise in

each performance. Largely untested in his wins, however, he

entered the Aug. 27 GI Travers S. as an unknown commodity.

That could explain why Rafael Bejarano, who was in the irons for

all three of Arrogate=s victories, opted to ride trainer Bob

Baffert=s other entry in the race, the more established stakes

winner American Freedom (Pulpit). Smith, who was already at

Saratoga that day to ride fellow Baffert trainee Drefong (Gio

Ponti) in the GI King=s Bishop S., gladly took the pickup mount.

After a breathtaking 13 1/2-length romp in a track record

1:59.36 later, Smith knew he had struck gold. Cont. p4

Arrogate and Mike Smith after winning the Pegasus World Cup

Adam Mooshian

Smith cont.

AI remember looking over at the [big screen] and thinking, >Oh

man! Did he just open up by that many, that quickly?=@ Smith

said. AThen I saw that the time was under two minutes and I was

floored. And I still thought that we had room to grow.@

That thought proved correct. Arrogate followed up his Travers

romp by besting Horse of the Year California Chrome (Lucky

Pulpit) in the GI Breeders= Cup Classic Nov. 5. Then, a week after

being crowned champion 3-year-old male for 2016, he scored

another devastating, track record-setting victory in the inaugural

running of the $12-million GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational

Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park.

AHe=s incredible,@ Smith exclaimed. AI don=t know if I=ve ever

been on this kind of horse, with the speed and stamina that he

has. It=s jaw-dropping. On top of all that, I don=t think we=ve

gotten to see how good he really is yet, which is crazy. In seven

starts, he=s already done things that the greats haven=t done.@

Equally impressive to Smith as Arrogate=s stratospheric talent

level is how unflappable and easy-going the colt is.

AWhat=s great about him is his mannerisms,@ Smith relayed.

AHe=s a big old laid back dude. He doesn=t know how special he is

and he really doesn=t care. He just goes out and does his job and

is just happy to get a carrot when he gets back to the barn. He=s

not a diva, doesn=t need all kinds of stuff, he=s just a cool, laid

back horse who=s just happy to hang out.@

Earlier this week, it was announced that Arrogate would ship

to the United Arab Emirates to run in the Mar. 25 $10 million

G1 Dubai World Cup. The 2,000-meter test is one of the few

prestigious dirt races that Smith has yet to land.

Smith cont.

AWithout a doubt,@ Smith said when asked if he=s motivated bychecking off the World Cup box on his resume. AIt was soexciting to hear that news. I=m still jumping around just for theopportunity. He=s going have to go there and run his race, but Ithink he should run huge, especially with that long old lane.@ Smith and agent Brad Pegram are very selective about hismounts these days, taking just 33 assignments thus far in 2017.Yet he ranks far and away as the leading money-earner, thanksto Arrogate=s Pegasus heroics. AI=ve been very blessed,@ Smith said. AWe=re having a whole lotof fun. I tell you, I don=t know if I=ve ever had this much fun.@ The fun may just be beginning. And the long, winding roadfrom Holy Bull to Unbridled=s Song to Giacomo to Arrogate hasreturned Smith to the pinnacle of his profession. It=s likely to bea while before he comes back down.

Six to Watch for From Fasig. cont. from p1HIP 21, c, Tale of the Cat--Awesome Bull, by Holy BullBreeder: Edition Farm (NY)Consignor: Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent IIBuyer: August Dawn FarmPrice: $250,000 NFL Hall of Famer Bill Parcells has already enjoyed racetracksuccess with a New York-bred son of Tale of the Cat in MSWSaratoga Snacks, and he looks to be poised for a similar outcomewith this latest purchase. Having previously sold for $160,000 atthe Fasig-Tipton Saratoga New York-bred Preferred Sale, thisFeb. 22 foal looked very athletic while really striding out nicely, stopping the clock in :10 2/5. By a racehorse sire, he seems capable of handling longer distances.

HIP 48, c, Curlin--Dress the Part, by Malibu MoonBreeder: Lochlow Farm (Ky)Consignor: Consigned by William B. Harrigan (Miacomet FarmLtd.), Agent

Buyer: Mike Ryan, agentPrice: $170,000 He Aonly@ worked in :10 4/5, but if this well-bred colt runs tohis pedigree, we might be talking about him come this time nextyear. Purchased for $500,000 in utero at Fasig-Tipton Novemberand then for $240,000 at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga, this relativelylate foal (Apr. 22) is out of a mare who took some time todevelop and who was a stakes-winning router at five. Dress thePart is also a full-sister to the undefeated, but ill-fated MGSWOnlyforyou. Hip 48 might not have run a hole in the wind from atime perspective, but he wasn=t pushed on too hard and showedoff an athleticism that might suit him well as the trips get longer.

HIP 117, c, Paynter--Perfect Wave, by Boston Harbor

Breeder: Millennium Farms & Payner Syndicate (Ky)

Consignor: SGV Thoroughbreds (Steven Venosa), agent

Buyer: Steven W Young, agent

Price: $425,000

This is one of the first we=ve seen on the track from Paynter=s

first crop, and if the rest are anything like him, look out. This

$170,000 Fasig-Tipton October grad looked quick and athletic

while breezing in a willing and fairly unpressured :10 1/5. His

dam was two-for-two sprinting as a juvenile, but a SW/MGSP

half-sister was later developing and preferred a route of ground.

Hip 117 seems versatile himself, and could be quick and

precocious while also able to handle added real estate.

HIP 150, c, Flat Out--Story Untold, by Old Fashioned

Breeder: Machmer Hall (Ky)

Consignor: Consigned by Q Bar J Thoroughbreds LLC (Jenn &

Quincy Adams), Agent

Buyer: John C Oxley

Price: $400,000

A great pinhooking score as just a $50,000 FTKJUL yearling,

this colt=s MGISW sire seemed to get better with age, but he

looks like he inherited serious speed and precocity from his

dam=s side. Cont. p6

Hip 150 cont.

The :10 1/5 breezer is a half to Arella Rockstar (Astrology), a

front-running debut winner last summer at Saratoga who took

the GIII Matron S. off the claim for Rudy Rodriguez next out. Hip

150's unraced dam is a half to Feline Story (Tale of the Cat), a

freakishly fast 2-year-old who won her debut by almost 12,

annexed the Astoria S. by daylight second up and grabbed the

GIII Sorority S. by 5 3/4 lengths two starts later.

HIP 152, f, Malibu Moon--Stylish Wildcat, by Forest Wildcat

Breeder: Redmon Farm, LLC

Consignor: De Meric Sales, agent

Buyer: Lawley-Wakelin Bloodstock, LLC

Price: $285,000

Bred just like 2-year-old sale topper and speedy GSW juvenile

Corfu, this $200,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga acquisition looked to

be built downhill with a nice, big stride as she stopped the clock

in :10 2/5. Her dam won the first two starts of her career at

three, and was a front-running MSW turf sprinter. Her third

dam, for what it=s worth, was 1985 champion juvenile filly

Family Style.

+SOFT CHEESE (f, 3, Quality Road--Cerce Cay, by Hard Spun)

showed good speed and turned back all challengers to graduate

first out going two turns at Oaklawn. Coming in with an above-

average local worktab, including a half-mile breeze in :48 flat

(12/68) Feb. 18, the homebred was given a 6-1 chance and

broke sharply to set the pace going into the clubhouse turn.

Dictating splits of :23.51 and :48.20, the bay was challenged by a

pair of foes on the far turn, but disposed of them by the top of

the lane. Drinks On Broadway (Stay Thirsty), who had saved

ground throughout, tipped into the clear soon after that and

appeared poised to run by the leader, but Soft Cheese gamely

stonewalled that foe in the final sixteenth to earn a neck victory.

SPRINTING VETERANSOLE POWER RETIRED

Popular sprinter Sole Power (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}) has been

retired from racing at age 10. The gelding will spend his

retirement at Horse Park Stud in Ashford, County Wicklow.

"He was a great horse, but time waits for no man and he's

been retired,@ said trainer Eddie Lynam. "He's been a wonderful

horse and he's going out on his own terms, as he's totally sound.

His form up to 2015 had been at a very high level, but his form

has dipped in recent years as, like all of us, he's got slower as

he's got older.@

Campaigned by Sabena Power, Sole Power first gained acclaim

when besting the world champion sprinter Starspangledbanner

(Aus) (Choisir {Aus}) in the G1 Nunthorpe S. at 100-1 as a 3-year-

old in 2010. He won the G2 Temple S. the following year and

was just touched off when a head third in the G1 Prix de

l=Abbaye. Sole Power was placed in Meydan=s G1 Al Quoz Sprint

and Royal Ascot=s G1 King=s Stand S. at five, and earned his

second Group 1 score the following year at six when taking out

the King=s Stand. He posted two more Group 1 placings before

that season was outBin the Nunthorpe and Sha Tin=s

G1 Longines Hong Kong Sprint when second behind Japanese

Horse of the Year Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}).

Cont. p2

COMIN= THROUGH THE WET With a current track rating of Heavy 9, Saturday=s G1 Randwick

Guineas (1600m) will not only be a pointer to future carnival

success, but more so a race highlighting who can handle the

rain-sodden track conditions.

A field of 14 have accepted for the A$1-million contest, with

three of those having also accepted in the G1 Australian Guineas

which is run 20 minutes after in Melbourne. Which race those

three will contest is currently unknown, but connections of

G1 VRC Derby winner Prized Icon (Aus) (More Than Ready) have

indicated their colt is currently in Melbourne.

Chris Waller=s Comin= Through (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), a

half-brother to top-class multiple Group 1 winner Criterion (NZ)

(Sebring {Aus}), will be ridden by Joao Moreira, and while the

colt is arguably one of the most inexperienced in the field with

only five runs under his belt, he does have wet form and his last

start third behind favoured runner Man From Uncle (Aus)

(Uncle Mo) should see him a leading contender. Cont. p5

Sprinting Veteran Sole Power Retired cont. from p1

Sole Power proved better than ever the following year at

seven, defending his King=s Stand title and winning the

Nunthorpe once again. After a handful of agonizing close

finishes, Sole Power at last got off the mark at the highest level

in Dubai in 2015, winning the G1 Al Quoz Sprint over Hong Kong

sprint star Peniaphobia (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}). The dark bay

went winless in eight tries last year but nonetheless acquitted

himself well running in Dubai, England and Ireland. Sole Power

made three starts at this year=s Dubai World Cup Carnival and

was last seen finishing sixth in the G3 Meydan Sprint on Feb. 16.

Sole Power won 12 of 65 starts and earned more than ,2-

million.

"I've never trained a more genuine, happier and sounder horse

than Sole Power,@ Lynam said. "I've been training since I was 21

and I'm 55 now. I was a nobody until he came around and he's

taken me to places I never felt were possible to go to.@

Lynam said Sole Power would spend a few months winding

down at his yard before departing for his retirement home.

"Putting him on the horsebox that one last time, that will be

the saddest day," the trainer said.

CHEVELEY SEASON IN FULL SWING David and Patricia Thompson=s Cheveley Park Stud has had a

busy start to the foaling season, with 26 of its mares having

foaled out in recent weeks. Those include a number of notable

bluebloods among its broodmare band.

Hypnotize (GB) (Machiavellian), the dam of G1 Cheveley Park

S. winner and champion 2-year-old filly Hooray (GB) (Invincible

Spirit {Ire}), produced a filly by Invincible Spirit=s son Mayson

(GB). Hypnotize will return to that Cheveley Park resident sire,

whose first crop is three this year.

Clinical (GB) (Motivator {GB}), whose son Lockheed (GB)

(Exceed and Excel {Aus}) finished third in last year=s G1 Goffs

Vincent O=Brien National S. for China Horse Club, foaled a filly by

Kingman on Feb. 22. Clinical will visit Kingman and Mayson=s sire

Invincible Spirit this year. Cont. p3

On my list of top five things in the world

(following my two children, of course), I

am fairly certain that France, the beach

and racing would run 3-4-5. So you can

only imagine how exciting it is to present

Jocelyn Targett’s whimsical tale about a

winter respite at Cagnes-sur-Mer, a race-

track in France. On the beach. With wine

(#6). Dive on in. We also give you a guide

to the birthday celebration for Man o’ War,

who turns 100 this month; introduce you to

McCracken, Kansas, population 190, which

is about to become famous for its Ken-

tucky Derby namesake and give 85-year-

old Janis Whitham the thrill of a lifetime;

show you what’s new in Dubai (it’s always

something!) and let Australian trainer Chris

Waller have the last word. Hint: we’re all

going to want that sleeping app of his…

Comin= Through The Wet cont. from p1

Speaking of the Anthony Cummings-trained Man From Uncle,

no runner comes into the race in better from. He has won his

two most recent starts at Group 3 and Group 2 level, and if the

gelding can handle the step up to 1600 metres and the heavy

conditions, he should play a part in the finish.

Splitting Man From Uncle and Comin= Through last time out in

the G2 Hobartville S. (1400m) was the three-time winner Echo

Effect (Aus) (Reset {Aus}). Likely to try and lead again, the main

concern for the gelding is how the track will play along the

inside and if the runners are coming wide down the home

straight, which could see him disadvantaged from barrier two.

With the progeny of Coolmore=s So You Think (NZ) really

hitting their straps during their Classic season, the Hawkes

Racing team will saddle up an undeniable chance in Inference

(Aus) (So You Think {NZ}), a colt capable of being the next Group

1 winner for his sire. Third behind Prized Icon (Aus) in the Derby

during the spring, the colt resumed with a pleasing fifth over

1400 metres and, with two wins from three starts on a soft

track, the Tommy Berry-ridden colt should be watched closely.

STEP UP IN TRIP KEY FOR CHAUTAUQUA Currently experiencing his longest-ever losing streak, having

gone winless since victory in Hong Kong=s G1 Chairman=s Sprint

in Hong Kong four starts back, Hawkes Racing=s Chautauqua

(Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}) is stepping beyond 1200 metres

for the first time since a third to Horse of the Year Dissident

(Aus) (Sebring {Aus}) in the 2015 G1 All Aged S. The class runner

of Saturday=s G1 Canterbury BMW Stakes (1300m) field,

Chautauqua has two Group 1 victories at the track, but in the

small field of eight runners, Tommy Berry will need to be at his

best to ensure the gallant grey gets back to winning form.

Last start winners Le Romain (Aus) (Hard Spun) and Music

Magnate (NZ) (Written Tycoon {Aus}) are bound to improve

from their first-up stakes victories, and with wins at the track as

well as in heavy conditions, the Group 1-winning pair are bound

to prove more than competitive.

The weight-for-age scale sees the two 3-year-olds carry three

kilos less than the rest of the field, and having his first start for

the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable is the G1 New

Zealand 2000 Guineas winner Ugo Foscolo (NZ) (Zacinto {GB}).

Beaten once from six starts, the former Stephen Marsh-trained

runner is now trained on the track and with a solid fifth behind

Group 1 winner English (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}) and a

seven-length victory at his two trials leading into the race, the

three-time stakes winner could be the surprise package.

Sacred Elixir | Racing And Sports

WIDE OPEN AUSTRALIAN GUINEAS As the second Guineas to be run on Saturday, a large field of

19 (including three emergencies) have accepted for the

A$750,000 contest at Flemington. History will need to be broken

if Divine Prophet (Aus) (Choisir {Aus}) is to be the first to

complete the Caulfield Guineas/Australian Guineas double, and

after a pleasing effort at weight for age in the G1 CF Orr S.

behind Black Heart Bart (Aus) (Blackfriars {Aus}) first-up, the

Dwayne Dunn-ridden colt importantly has proven form at the

distance.

Impressive last-start G3 CS Hayes S. winner Hey Doc (Aus)

(Duporth {Aus}), third behind Divine Prophet and Seaburge

(Aus) (Sebring {Aus}) in the Caulfield Guineas, looks to start as

one of the favourites, and with form at the distance and the

course, could give the Tony McEvoy-trained colt back-to-back

stakes victories.

Backing up after a narrow fourth last Saturday in the

G1 Futurity at weight for age behind Black Heart Bart, the Peter

and Paul Snowden-trained Attention (Aus) (Stratum {Aus})

needs only to show that he can handle the trip, a distance that

he has failed at once previously, to be right in the finish.

One of four last-start winners in the field, the Lindsay

Park-trained Fuhryk (Aus) (Star Witness {Aus}) was a scratching

at the barrier last Saturday. Although she steps up to 1600

metres having never raced past 1200 metres in her six starts,

her two-length victory in the G3 Kevin Hayes S. at her most

recent start highlights her ability. Another of the fillies in the

field who looks a chance is Harlow Gold (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}), a

stablemate of Fuhryk. A winner over the trip last spring before

ending her campaign with a second in the G1 Crown Oaks, the

Regan Bayliss-ridden filly resumed with a very pleasing third in

the G3 Vanity S. over 1400 metres, and the extra 200 metres on

Saturday is clearly in her favour.

>ELIXIR= LOOKING FOR WINNING FORMULAby Heather Anderson

Tabbed the New Zealand champion juvenile last season on the

back of a victory in the G1 J.J. Atkins going 1600 metres at Eagle

Farm in June, Sacred Elixir (NZ) (Pour Moi {Ire}) was made the

$5 second favourite in Saturday=s 2400-metre NZ$1-million G1

Vodafone New Zealand Derby and, if he puts his best hoof

forward Saturday, could prove the main danger to $4.50

morning line pick Savile Row (NZ) (Makfi {GB}). It has largely

been a case of feast or famine for the son of G1 Epsom Derby

winner Pour Moi (Ire) who gains blinkers here, as he added two

more victories--in the G3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude upon

resuming Sept. 24 and in the G2 Super Vase S. upped to 2040m

at Moonee Valley two starts on Oct. 22. In between was an

eighth in the G1 Caulfield Guineas in early October and the

Raffles Racing colourbearer was an encouraging second in the

2500-metre G1 Victoria Derby at Flemington Oct. 29. Spelled for

three months, Sacred Elixir was beaten only 1 1/2 lengths into

fourth as the crowd=s pick in Ellerslie=s Listed NZB Insurance

Karaka 3yo Mile when short on fitness with G1SP Jon Snow (NZ)

(Iffraaj {GB}) one better Jan. 29. He ran up the field when

seventh, far behind on slow ground in late Derby nominee and

Saturday=s $7 third choice Gingernuts (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB})=s

G2 Avondale Guineas Feb. 18. Charles Road (Aus)

(Myboycharlie {Ire}) was the runner-up, with Mongolian Wolf

(Aus) (Pluck) completing the trifecta in that slowly run affair.

The sparsely raced Savile Row has only been a nose and a head

away from tasting Group 1 glory in his last two starts, the Levin

Classic at Trentham behind Hall of Fame (NZ) (Savabeel {Aus})

Jan. 14 and the Feb. 11 Herbie Dyke S. versus elders going 2000

metres at Te Rapa, respectively. Runner-up four starts ago to

Ugo Foscolo (NZ) (Zacinto {GB}) in the G1 New Zealand 2000

Guineas Nov. 5, Savile Row saluted in a Dec. 29 handicap at

Ellerslie prior to his additional Group 1 placings. Cont. p8

New Zealand Derby cont.

Levin Classic fifth-place finisher Wyndspelle (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}),

who was also second in the G1 Sistema Diamond S. at two, was

one ahead of last out Feb. 18 handicap victor Excalibur (NZ)

(Tavistock {NZ}) that day, and could be peaking at the right time.

In receipt of a decent barrier in the G2 Waikato Guineas after

three poor draws, the bay colt found the 2000 metres to his

liking for a first black-type victory at Te Rapa Feb. 4. Otaki=s G3

Wellington S. hero Lincoln Blue (NZ) (Savabeel {Aus}) ran third

that day, one better than Cha Siu Bao (Aus) (Smart Missile

{Aus}).

Rising Red (NZ) (Redwood {GB}), who exited a 2100-metre

handicap with an impressive victory at Sandown Lakeside Feb.

22, is another intriguing prospect. The son of Redwood (GB) has

shipped across the Tasman from former Kiwi trainers Trent

Busuttin and Natalie Young=s base.

TARZINO TO WESTBURY STUD Tarzino (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}), winner of the G1 Victoria Derby

and G1 Rosehill Guineas, will enter stud later this year at

Westbury Stud in New Zealand, according to

theinformant.co.nz. Tarzino will stand for NZ$15,000 for a

syndicate headed by Westbury and part-owner Rosemont Stud.

Trained by Mick Price, Tarzino won three of five starts during his

spring 3-year-old campaign, culminating in the Victoria Derby. In

the autumn he finished second, beaten a short head, in the

G1 Australian Guineas two weeks prior to his Rosehill Guineas

score, and he retires with four wins from 14 starts and earnings

of A$1,647,050.

AHe stood out in the Australian 3-year-old crop and that will

stand to him,@ Westbury General Manager Russell Warwick told

The Informant. AWe=ve seen it so much with Reliable Man where

breeders will support him and buyers will want his progeny

because they recognise the form, they appreciate it. He=s a

gorgeous type, which Mick Price, who is well known as a straight

shooter, says is the reason he was attracted to him in the first

place. He describes him as a replica of Zabeel--he has all those

characteristics that made him such a good galloper.@

DEBT COLLECTOR PREPS FOR DUBAIby Alan Carasso

Reigning Singapore Horse of the Year Debt Collector (NZ)

(Thorn Park {Aus}) tunes up for a prospective start in the US$6-

million G1 Dubai Turf Mar. 25 when he heads to the post for a

1600-metre >open stakes= at Kranji Racecourse Friday evening.

Trained by Cliff Brown for Glenn Whittenbury=s Barree Stable,

the 4-year-old dropped the first three starts of his career, but

has since rattled off eight straight wins, including the Kranji Mile

and the Raffles Cup (1800m) to close out a season for which he

was recognized as the champion of his generation and champion

miler in addition to horse of the year. Freshened up for this

preparation, the bay resumed with a cosy 1.3-length success

over 1400 metres Feb. 10 (video) and figures tough right back

from the inside barrier.

If there is to be an upset, it would likely come from the

progressive Jupiter Gold (Aus) (Congrats). The A$130,000 Magic

Millions Gold Coast yearling grad, five for eight in his career, is

using Friday=s race as a steppingstone to the final legs of the 3-

year-old series, the Singapore 3YO Classic (1400m) Apr. 14 and

the Singapore Guineas (1600m) May 14. Trainer Hideyuki

Takaoka harbours no delusions of grandeur that he can lower

Debt Collector=s colors, even with a significant pull in the

weights.

ALook, it=s Debt Collector, he=s a top-class horse. On ratings, he

is about 15 kilos higher than Jupiter Gold,@ the conditioner told

Michael Lee of the Singapore Turf Club. ASo, whether [the

weight difference] is seven or five kilos, or less, it=s still in his

favour, but it also gives us a bit of an advantage, a bit of a

fighting chance. To be honest, I=m not sure if seven kilos will be

enough to make up the difference as on paper, such ratings

don=t always show the actual difference in class on the tracks.
