SMDP Ghana in partnership with Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA)
is excited to offer this new course under the Pro-Poor Enterprise Development Track
(PPED). The course will provide students with an opportunity to focus on advanced
topics in Pro-Poor Enterprise Development. The course is suitable for managers, donors
and practitioners who are involved in value chain, BDS or market development
programs that target poor producers and entrepreneurs. It is designed for practitioners
who have completed PPED Practices and Principles. However, those who are well-versedin market development will be accepted into the program with permission of the
instructor.Advanced Topics in PPED will offer modules on critical topics related to
successful PPED programming. The course will provide an opportunity for participants to
expand their knowledge and practice of pro-poor enterprise development. The course
includes case studies, exercises, interactive lectures, small group work and a field visit
to an ongoing value chain development project. Module Descriptions
• Course Overview and Introductions
• Current PPED Issues – Debates and Trends: Review the current trends or issues
in the field with debates and discussions on these issues and overall industry
challenges.
• Inclusive Economic Development: Explore successful strategies and models to
reach marginalized groups, including women, HIV/AIDs affected populations, and youth.
Included are discussions around mainstreaming versus targeting strategies.
• Best Practices in Implementation: Build on the program design course to help
participants develop strategies related to implementation. The course would explore
typical implementation challenges (for example, client attrition, staff capacity) and work
through strategies to address these challenges.
• PPED in Practice: The class will visit an ongoing value chain development projectnear Accra, Ghana.
• Value Chain Finance: Finance is a critical part of PPED. This module will introduce
value chain analysis with a financial lens, review different financing models: warehouse
receipts, trader finance, contract agriculture, and discuss strategies to links with
microfinance programming.
• Working with Lead Firms: A number of projects have highlighted the benefits of
linking producers to markets through lead firms. Through this module, participants will
develop an understanding of the critical challenges and opportunities related to
selection of lead firms, collaboration models, and implementation of a lead firm
approach.
