MINIMUM BREAKING STRENGTH – 3 SIGMA TESTThe minimum Breaking Strength (MBS) of all SMC products are calculated using the 3 Sigma Rating system which indicates that 99.87% of the products tested will break at values above the published MBS. All breaking strengths reported in this product catalog and on SMC equipment are calculated using this method.

PIN TO PIN VS. SYSTEM STRENGTHStandards such as NFPA, ANSI, CE and UIAA prescribe various types of test methods; some of them are intended to test the system strength and others are designed to test the device only. The “system strength” method tests the device as it interacts with rope, webbing or other applicable equipment. The “pin to pin” method tests the device strength only by loading the device between two polished steel pins and slowly pulled to failure.

When comparing device minimum breaking strengths, the user needs to be certain which test methods have been applied as the results can be signi cantly di erent from one to the other and o en misleading. For example, a rescue descender used with lightweight, small diameter rope will have a lower system strength than the same descender used with a heavyweight, larger rope. In addition, the pin to pin method on this same device will provide another MBS altogether. As such, the user can be misinformed if the source and method of testing is not adequately understood.

Many of the standards are written to test the system strength rather than the pin to pin strength. This is important because the system is only as strong as the weakest link and when using the device in the eld, the user needs this information to make good gear choices for their application. When it is not practical to test in a system due to so many variables or when variables can signi cantly alter the e ect of the test, the pin to pin method is used.

MARKING OF STANDARD STRENGTH VS ACTUAL STRENGTHWhen a device is certi ed to a standard, the minimum breaking strength required to meet the standard is marked on all SMC devices. If the actual breaking strength (still tested per the standard) is signi cantly greater than the minimum required strength, SMC may also mark the device with the actual strength information. For example, the large rescue carabiner meets the NFPA G rating of 40kN MBS, but the actual MBS is 46kN. SMC marks both of these results on the carabiner.

Please note that SMC does not mark a device with the pin to pin results (which is o en greater than the system strength) unless it is the method required by the standard. For example, the rescue descender may break at 150% of the rated strength when pulled pin to pin. Per the standards, however, SMC will only mark the more realist, but lower system strength, on the device.

Aluminum Pulleys, continued

(PMP) Prusik-Minding-Pulley: Common in rope rescue. The rope to be pulled is passed through a pulley, and a Prusik is tied on the loaded side. When the rope is pulled, the Prusik rides against the pulley, and the rope slides through it; but when the rope is relaxed, the Prusik slides away from the pulley and grabs the rope. Thus, the combination acts as a ratchet.

TerrAdaptor

The TerrAdaptor is the most versatile portable anchor system available for use in rescue, industrial, and wilderness environments. This innovate high directional system is the result of the combined years of experience in the design, use and manufacturing of equipment by Pigeon Mountain Industries (PMI), Skedco, and Seattle Manufacturing Corporation (SMC).

The TerrAdaptor system is unique in that it con gures as a gin pole/monopod, an A-Frame/Bipod, a Quadpod and, of course, the most adjustable Tripod in the market today. Due to the extreme adjustability of the TerrAdaptor, countless non-standard con gurations are available utilizing shallow angles and horizontals that are not available with other tripod systems in the market. With independently variable head angles and interchangeable compo-nents, the TerrAdaptor will adjust to your rescue environment whether it is rural, urban, industrial, or con ned space.

The TerrAdaptor Portable Anchor System is Certi ed CE0843 to EN795 and CEN TS16415 (PENDING) in the standard symmetric Tripod and Quadpod con gurations and Certi ed NFPA1983 2012 Edition.

SMC is a mountaineering and technical work and rescue brand that produces elite equipment. SMC designs and manufactures sport and rescue hardware to aircra industry standards while remaining true to a heritage of excellence and innovation. Seasoned climbers and rescue person-nel depend on the reliable performance of SMC gear in the most critical situations and demand-ing conditions around the globe.

Founded in 1967 as Seattle Manufacturing Corporation, on the slopes and training grounds of the worlds best mountaineers, SMC gear is trustworthy in complicated rescues, record setting rapid ascents, and expeditions to the most remote summits in the world. Our rst product was an oval carabiner designed and manufactured speci cally for Mary Anderson of the original REI Co-op Store who was dissatis ed with the quality and turnaround time of overseas manufactur-ers. Our founder, Jim Clark, identi ed the critical design and tooling elements that REI required and brought his aircra industry standards of excellence to the manufacture of mountaineering gear. Our products expanded into the rescue market as climbers of the 60’s and 70’s became the rescue experts of the 80’s. They required durable hardware that would reliably perform in the de-manding rescue environment. This request for stronger, more sophisticated products launched SMC’s technical rescue division.

Thirty years a er our rst oval carabiner, SMC saw a change in leadership that would instigate even higher standards of quality for our products. In 1997 while volunteering for Alaska State Parks, avid outdoorswoman Kathy Hughes was approached with the challenge of her life – to become the next CEO of SMC. Kathy le Alaska to meet with Jim Clark and a er considering the endless potential of commanding an industry icon, the decision was easy. Kathy became our CEO and moved SMC into a new era of customer service, information-driven communication, and ISO certi cation.

SMC is one of the few manufacturers of mountaineering and technical work and rescue hardware that is ISO 9001 certi ed. ISO 9001 is maintained by the International Organization for Standard-ization (ISO) and is a family of standards for managing quality control systems. This indepen-dent, third party certi cation process guarantees reliability and e ciency in manufacturing. We are proud that every piece of SMC gear meets these rigid controls; our products are simply the highest quality gear that you can buy; for your life – to last a lifetime.

Today, under the direction of Kathy Hughes and her highly skilled management team, SMC is proud to be a US manufacturer of functional, high-quality mountaineering and technical work and rescue gear that dreams, designs, and manufactures 100% of its equipment in the USA. We hold true to our heritage by continuously working to improve and develop our people, our processes and our procedures. Quality Gear for Life is more than a statement… for us, it is a way of life.
