YANGON RIVER → Estuary

• Formed by the confluence of Bago River, Hlaing River

and Pazundaung Creek.

• Also known as Yangon River with a length of 45 km,

and flows into the Andaman Sea.

• Highly influenced by tidal flows from the sea.

• 5.9 m at spring tide and

• 2.6 m neap tide

• Current velocity is 4 to 6 knots

Introduction to Yangon Ports

Yangon ports comprises inner ports and Thilawa ports.

▪ Inner port ➔ 32km upstream from Yangon River Mouth

➔ 64km from Yangon pilot boarding area

▪ Thilawa port ➔ 16km downstream from Inner Port

➔ 16km from the river mouth

▪ Accessing inner ports have two major constraints: Outer bar

(Elephant point) and Inner bar (Monkey point).

▪ Accessing Thilawa ports will have to pass outer bar only.

▪ Maximum accessible vessels ➔ 13,000dwt for Inner port

(167m LoA, 9m draft)

➔20,000dwt for Thilawa port

(200m LoA, 9m draft)

However, MPA recently allowed the larger vessels to Yangon inner port as trial basis.

For example in June, 2017, MV Pacific Star with 30,000dwt container ship (175m LoA) docked at MIP.

Key issues for Yangon Ports

▪ Current draught limitation of Yangon and Thilawa

Port (-9m and -10m respectively)

▪ Poor hinterland connections to Industrial Zones (IZs)

and Mandalay region

▪ Lack of synergy due to scattered port development

▪ High logistics costs hampering economic growth

▪ Short-term vision of Yangon Port and Thilawa (10-20

years)

▪ Uncertainties in the long-term

Opportunities for Yangon Ports

▪ Economic spin off (Labour)

▪ Economies of scale – bigger vessels (or MORE vessels)

▪ Integrated water front development

▪ Korea-Japan-China partnership

▪ Logical place – downtown port will be changing as it needs to be.

▪ Valuable business case

Challenges faced by ports today

▪ Globally, ports and terminals are under pressure to become faster, more streamlined and more

environmentally friendly.

▪ Ship size growth and cascading effects

▪ Shipping market concentration and pressure from alliances

▪ Regional competition between ports

▪ Rising need for improving port productivity

▪ Transformation in supply and demand chains

Solutions

These emerging challenges push ports to become “SMART”.

▪ Collaboration is the answer.

▪ Smart ports are engaging in incredibly modern practices in the wider

supply chain and digital innovation.

▪ Artificial Intelligence,

▪ Renewable Energies and

▪ Other technical solutions all allow ports to become more

intelligent.

▪ Upgraded flow and customer management

▪ Exceptional engagement strategies need to be developed.

Internet of Things (IoT) at Ports

▪ IoT is seen as the infrastructure of the information

society.

▪ IoT in port is currently most reinforced on use of:

✓ Various sensors

✓ RFID

✓ Wireless Sensor Networks

✓ Network communication technology

✓ M2M

✓ Handled mobile material

Wearables

Smart

phones

Vehicles,

appliances

▪ IoT can facilitate the developments of:

✓ Big Data

✓ Machine Learning → Port Automation !!!

Big Data at Ports

▪ The port can use Big Data to create value by:

▪ Making information more transparent and usable

▪ Boosting their productivity by collecting more accurate

and detailed performance information.

▪ Provide more precisely tailored services.

▪ Innovations and development of the next generation of

services.

▪ Big Data: extremely large data sets that may be analysed computationally to reveal patterns, trends,

and associations, especially relating to human/ machine behaviour and interactions.

What is SMART port?

SMART means

“doing More with Less”

• SMART Ports use new technologies to maximise efficiency and productivity by making better use of their

space, time, energy and resources.

• Using innovations like Smart Asset Management, ports can use predictive maintenance, 3D modelling

and digital data collection to perform digital simulations and scenario testing.

• Saving both Time & Money, these simulations provide highly accurate results that aid decision

making.

Page 21

What Smart Ports Do?

▪ Provide an intelligent info infrastructure in the port → Reap knowledge and wisdom from it

▪ Boost innovation → win the most possible with the least available resources

▪ Optimize → maximize utilization of the existing capacities of the port

▪ Smart Port is the new way of thinking and conception, rather than a collection of costly

new technologies for vanity shows in a port.

Smart Port development relies heavily on the intelligent information infrastructure and its advantages.

Intelligent Port

▪ Informatics,

▪ Digitization,

▪ Instrumentation → Automation

▪ The intelligence of the port can be used wisely to

transform it into a ‘Smart Port’.

Port Automation

▪ Currently around 30 container terminals are

automated around the world.

▪ Many processes have been automated in the past

decades including:

▪ vessel planning,

▪ yard planning,

▪ container checks, etc.

▪ Enhance port productivity levels in response to recent

ship size developments.

▪ Provides more predictable and stable container

handling

More focus is forming on intelligent algorithms that can

predict equipment behavior that enables prevention of

break downs and down time.

Smart Ports: Port of Hamburg

▪ Hamburg has implemented sensors, camera systems

and smart lights on roads

▪ Monitor traffic

▪ Facilitate the movement of barges when the traffic is

saturated

▪ Improve the overall productivity → Double capacity!!!

▪ Reduce contamination

▪ Decrease the number of accidents → Less Downtime.

Smart Ports: Port of Rotterdam

▪ Largest in Europe – handles more than 140,000 vessels annually → avg. 380 vessels/ day

Digital Transformation (Dashboard Application)

• Speed and efficiency are essential

• Reduce waiting time

• Real time water, weather and communications data (sensor

on quay wall, dolphins)

• Optimal time to berth/ dock – save time

• Smart planning: clients can select the most efficient routes

themselves.

• Dolphins automatically indicating their current load.

• Berths and dolphin automatically indicate availability

• Automated terminal – unmanned container handling, remotely

operated from central control room
