General information

The smart sales organisation1 provides aguarantee for the period of 24 months withoutkilometre limit for this accessory orreplacement part.

Operating safety

Important safety notes

G WARNING

Operating communications equipmentintegrated into the vehicle while drivingwill distract you from traffic conditions. You could then lose control of the vehicle. There is a risk of an accident.

Only operate these devices if road trafficconditions permit. If you are unsure aboutthe surrounding conditions, pull over to asafe location and make entries only whilethe vehicle is stationary.

Observe the legal requirements for the coun-try in which you are currently driving.Bear in mind that, at a speed of only 50 km/h,your vehicle covers a distance of nearly 14 mper second.

i The functionality of a roof aerial (radio,DAB) may be impaired if roof carriers areused.Attaching metallised retrofit film to thewindscreen may affect radio and GPS recep-tion and have a negative impact on all otheraerials in the vehicle interior.

Correct use

G WARNING

Modifications to electronic components, their software as well as wiring couldaffect their function and/or the operationof other networked components. This couldin particular also be the case for systemsrelevant to safety. They might not function

properly anymore and/or jeopardise theoperational safety of the vehicle. There isan increased risk of an accident and injury.

Do not attempt to modify the wiring as wellas electronic components or their software.Always have work on electrical and elec-tronic components carried out at a quali-fied specialist workshop.

If you make any changes to the vehicle elec-tronics, the general operating permit is ren-dered invalid. When using the device observe:

Rthe safety notes in this manualRtraffic rules and regulationsRlaws and safety standards pertaining to

motor vehicles

Declarations of conformity

Wireless vehicle components

The following information applies to allcomponents of the vehicle and the informa-tion systems and communication devicesintegrated into the vehicle which receiveand/or transmit radio waves:

i The components of this vehicle thatreceive and/or transmit radio waves arecompliant with the basic requirements andall other relevant conditions of Directive1999/5/EC.For further information enquire at anysmart centre.

Electromagnetic compatibility

The electromagnetic compatibility of thevehicle components has been checked andcertified according to the currently validversion of Regulation ECE-R 10.

Data stored in the vehicle

A large number of your vehicle's electroniccomponents can store data.

1 The guarantor is the respective sales organisation in the country in which the accessory or replacementpart was bought (see list in the Service Booklet).

The data memory temporarily or permanentlystores technical information about:

Rthe vehicle's operating stateReventsRfaultsThe technical information generally docu-ments the condition of a component, module, system or the environment. These include, for example:

RThe operating status of system components,e.g. fluid levelsRStatus messages concerning the vehicle and

its individual components, e.g. number ofwheel revolutions/speed, deceleration inmovement, lateral acceleration, accelera-tor pedal positionRMalfunctions and defects in key system

components, including, for instance, lights, brakes.RVehicle reactions and operating condi-

tions in special driving situations, including, for instance, deployment of anairbag, use of stability control systems.REnvironmental conditions, including, for

instance, the outside temperature. This data is of an exclusively technicalnature and can be used to:

Rassist in the detection and elimination offaults and defectsRanalyse vehicle functions, e.g. after an

accidentRoptimise vehicle functionsIf you have the vehicle serviced, this tech-nical information can be read out from theevent and fault data memory.Services include, for example, informationon:

Rrepair workRservice workRwarranty claimsRquality assuranceThe readout is handled by service networkstaff (including the manufacturer) with thehelp of special diagnostic testers. You canobtain more detailed information, ifrequired. After the fault has been rectified, the infor-mation is cleared in the fault memory or issequentially overwritten.

During vehicle operation, certain situationsmay arise in which this technical data - inconjunction with other information and, ifapplicable, after consultation with anapproved assessor - may be linked to an indi-vidual person.Examples of this include:

Raccident reportsRvehicle damageRevidenceAdditional functions that have been contrac-tually agreed upon with the customer alsomake it possible to transmit particular vehi-cle data from the vehicle. These additionalfunctions include, for instance, a vehiclelocating feature in the event of emergencies.

DAB (digital radio)

Information on DAB

i Portable electronic devices in the vehi-cle may seriously impair radio and DABradio reception.

Digital radio or DAB (Digital Audio Broad-casting) is a digital transmission standardoptimally designed for the mobile receptionof radio transmissions. Several programmesare combined into so-called ensembles andtransmitted on a single frequency. Some sta-tions only transmit programmes at certaintimes. If you have selected a station that hasbeen subsequently removed from the ensem-ble, it will no longer be received. You willcontinue to receive the other programmes inthe ensemble. Select either a different pro-gramme or a different ensemble.

i DAB cannot be received everywhere inEurope.

For DAB radio, only the Presets (Y page 37)display mode and the List (Y page 36) displaymode are possible.

G WARNING

If you operate RF transmitters incorrectlyin the vehicle, the electromagnetic radia-tion could interfere with the vehicle elec-tronics, e.g.:

Rif the RF transmitter is not connected toan exterior aerial

Rthe exterior aerial has been fittedincorrectly or is not a low-reflectiontype

This could jeopardise the operating safetyof the vehicle. There is a risk of an acci-dent.

Have the low-reflection exterior aerialfitted at a qualified specialist workshop. When operating RF transmitters in thevehicle, always connect them to the low-reflection exterior aerial.

You must observe the legal requirements forthe country in which you are currently driv-ing when operating mobile communicationsequipment in the vehicle.Excessive levels of electromagnetic radia-tion may cause damage to your health and tothe health of others. There is scientific discussion surroundingthe possible health risks posed by electro-magnetic fields. You can reduce this risk byusing an exterior aerial. Therefore, only use mobile communicationequipment if it is connected to the exterioraerial of the vehicle.

General instructions for the data con-nection

The smart Media-System uses a mobile phoneconnection for data connection. Please take note of the following informationwhen using data services:

RThe mobile connectivity and built in SIMcard for this vehicle can only be used fordata services offered by certain third par-ties, as well as Daimler AG, via the smartMedia-System for use in the vehicle. Theuse of data services requires the conclu-sion of separate agreements between thevehicle user and the respective provider.Voice service usage is not permitted. Assuch, the SIM card must be permanentlyinstalled as factory equipment.RThe mobile communications connectivity

and the SIM card may only be used respon-sibly in accordance with the applicablelaws and other legal requirements of thecorresponding countries, insofar as this iswithin the power of the vehicle user.RDevelopment, reproduction, decompiling

or disassembly the SIM-card are notallowed. Statutory authority remains unaf-fected.

Failure to follow the above instructions, depending on the severity of non-compli-ance, can in some cases lead to temporary orpermanent deactivation of the mobile con-nection and the SIM card, in particular toprotect Daimler AG and its contractual part-ners from negative legal consequences aris-ing from non-compliance.The availability of mobile connectivity inindividual countries depends on the exis-tence of such mobile service agreements withlocal mobile network providers; availabilitycan therefore change from time to time. The maximum period of validity for themobile connectivity is 15 years from the timeof installation in the vehicle.
