This 500W universal dimmeris designed for DIN-railmounting with energy mea-surement. Single phase vari-ables: VLN, A, W. Energymeasurement: total kWhconsumed by the connectedload. This universal dimmeris suitable for dimming resis-tive, inductive and capaci-tive loads and LED lamps(see LED lamps table). Themaximum load of R, L, Ctype is 500W depending onthe temperature: the reduc-tion is described accordingto the trend in the diagram“derating curve”.The dimmer automaticallydetects if the connectedload is resistive, capacitiveor inductive, but if a LED
lamp is to be driven, theuser has to select the rightcurve as described below. The dimmer is completelyprogrammable via thesmart-house tool. The technology usedenables to electrically pro-tect the dimmer againstshort circuit, overload andover-temperature. Thanks tothe internal bus, it can beeasily connected to adjacentdimmers (see “wiring dia-gram”) without the need ofcabling the Dupline® BUS.Futhermore, the integratedsink allows you to mount thedimmers adjacently withoutany reduction of the loaddue to the increased tem-perature.

Mode of OperationWorking mode If the SH2D500WE230 isconnected to the Dupline®bus and the bus is workingproperly, the dimmer is inSTANDARD mode and thegreen LED is ON. The dim-mer enters LOCAL mode ifthe push button is pressedor if the bus is faulty or notconnected. In LOCAL modethe dimmer doesn't acceptany command from the busand the green LED will beflashing. The dimmer can goback to STANDARD modeonly when the bus is ok andafter one of the following
events: 1) As soon as theDupline® bus returns 2) After a timeout of 1minute after a button press3) After a power cycle.
PushbuttonBus connectedThe push button can beused with a short or longpressure (>2 seconds): itspressure puts the dimmer inLOCAL mode.Short pressure: the light isswitched ON/OFF (togglefunction) with the set value.Factory settings is 100%, sothe first time this push but-
ton is pressed with a shortpressure, the light isswitched ON to 100%. If adifferent light scene is mem-orised in the module, thelight is switched ON at thatlevel.Long pressure: once thelight is ON, by keeping thekey pressed for more than 2seconds, the light will beincreased up to 100% andthen decreased down to5%. This will be repeateduntil the key is kept pressed.Every time the button ispressed, the ramp is invert-ed.
Bus not connected or faulty If the bus is not connectedor faulty, the push-buttonoverwrites the failsafe condi-tion with the previouslydescribed behaviour.
Coding/AddressingNo addressing is neededsince the module is providedwith a specific identificationnumber (SIN): the user hasonly to insert the SIN num-ber in the configuration toolwhen creating the systemconfiguration.

Mode of Operation (cont.)Faulty lamps recognitionIf the measured current islower than 20mA, the relaymodule gives a message offaulty load (the connectedlamp might be broken). Thisinformation is sent toSH2WEB24 that makes itavailable to the user via theSHtool, Webserver, email,SMS, ...
Fail/safe conditionThe output status of thedimmers, when the Dupline®bus is not connected orfaulty, is programmed via theSH Tool and the user canchoose between the follow-ing options:1. Output always OFF2. Output always ON3. The output maintains the
status they had beforethe disconnection.
As default, output is factoryset to OFF.
Energy measurementThe electrical values mea-sured by theSH2D500WE230 are: cur-rent, voltage, power, energy. These readouts are sent tothe SH2WEB24 and loggedthere, the instant values andthe logged ones are accessi-
ble to the user by connect-ing to the webserver resi-dent in the SH2WEB24, viasms, emails or modbus.
Hardware short circuitprotectionAs described in the “LightingCircuit Design”, if morecapacitive transformers haveto be connected in parallelfor a total load higher than180W @20°, the hardwareshort circuit protection hasto be disabled. This protection has to bedisabled via the SH tool asdescribed below in “Pro-gramming”.If the hardware short circuitprotection is enabled, it isalways active when the out-put is both on and off. If theprotection is disabled, it isactive only when the load isoff, in this situation care hasto be taken to avoid shortcircuits when the output isactive, otherwise the dimmerwill be damaged.
Programming The dimmer SH2D500WE230is fully programmable via theSH tool and the pro-grammable parameters arethe following ones:
1)Ramp time. It is the timethe dimmer takes toswitch the light on from0% to 100% (and from100% to 0%). It can beset from a minimum of 2seconds to a maximum of27 seconds
2)Load type. This dimmercan drive
- RLC load (RLC curve): e.g.incandescent, halogenlamps
- LED lamps dimmable withtrailing edge curve (P1curve)
- LED lamps dimmable withleading edge curve (P2curve)
- LED lamps dimmable withleading edge curve and nosoft start (P3 curve)
Please see LED lamp dim-ming paragraph for moredetails.3)Fail safe state. The usercan program the three dif-ferent behaviour previous-ly described.
- Output always off- Output always on- The output maintains thestatus it had before thedisconnection.
4)Short circuit protection. The user can enable/dis-able the hardware short
circuit protection.5)Scenario changing
enabled. With this optionthe user can block thechanging of a dimmingscenario in a dimmingfunction (e.g. hotel, publicplaces, …).
6)Scenario saving enabled(unlock). With this optionthe user can block thesaving of a change in ascenario in a dimmingfunction.
7)Soft start ramp. Using theSH tool, the user candefine a different soft startramp for each scenario. The soft start can be pro-grammed from 1 to 31seconds.
8)Soft stop ramp. Using theSH tool, the user candefine a different soft stopramp for each scenario. The soft stop can be pro-grammed from 1 to 31seconds.
The dimmer SH2D500WE230can also be used, coupledwith any of the smart-houselux sensor, in dimming func-tions with constant light pro-gramming.

LEDs IndicationRed LED: Always ON: LoadON, no error - 1 short blink every 4 sec-onds: High current warning(> 2.5A). The dimmer goeson working but high temper-ature might occur. Thisdepends on the time theoutput stays on and on theroom temperature. - 2 short blinks every 4seconds: Overvoltage error. To reset it, switch the dim-mer OFF. If the error appearsagain, the load must bemodified. - 3 short blinks every 4
seconds: High temperatureerror: this error will be trig-gered if the internal tempera-ture raises above 90°C.Please wait until the insidetemperature goes below70°C. The reset of the error isautomatic once the tempera-ture is within operating range. - 4 short blinks every 4seconds: Wrong frequencyerror. If the frequency of thepower supply is correct, thiserror indicates a hardwarefailure. The reset of the erroris automatic once the fre-quency is ok.
- 5 short blinks every 4seconds: Short circuit soft-ware protection active. Remove the short circuit andpress the push button on thedimmer. If the error is still present, the above procedure shouldbe repeated.
Always blinking: Hardwareshort circuit protectionactive. To reset it, switch thedimmer OFF, remove theshort circuit and switch thedimmer ON again.
Green LED:ON: Supply ONOFF: Supply OFFBlinking: LOCAL mode.
Yellow LED: if the Dupline®Bus is working properly, it isalways ON.If there is a fault on the Busit will be flashing. It is OFF if the Bus is OFF ornot connected.

LED Lamp DimmingAs described in “Program-ming”, when using LEDlamps, the dimmer needs tobe programmed with curveP1 when the LED manufac-ture recommends trailingedge dimming (capacitive),P2/P3 when the LED manu-facturer recommends lead-ing edge dimming (induc-tive). The selection of P1,P2, P3 also implements adifferent response curve. This curve is the relationshipbetween lamp brightnessand the power supplied to it.LED lamps have a differentcurve compared to standardinductive loads. Please see table here for
manufacturer’s recommen-dation. If your LED lamp isnot listed, please refer to themanufacturer for advice ontheir preference for leadingor trailing edge dimming. If many LED lamps are con-nected in parallel, we sug-gest the following rule todefine the maximum numberof LED lamps, the maximumtotal LED lamp power ≤1/10th of dimmer’s maxi-mum rated power. The maxi-mum load depends on thecapacitive input impedenceof the LED lamps, so it canvary according to the LEDlamps type.If the red LED on the
SH2D500WE230 dimmerstarts blinking continuouslyas soon as the load isapplied, this suggests thatthe total load has becomemore capacitive than induc-tive (the total capacitance isdone by the sum of thecapacitance of each con-nected LED lamp) and cannot be driven anymore bythe P2 curve. The explanation of this is asfollows, as previouslydescribed most LED lampshave to be dimmed as aninductive load with leadingedge dimming (P2), but ifmore LED lamps are con-nected in parallel, the load
becomes more capacitive(total capacitance is the sumof capacitance for each con-nected).Since a capacitive load cannot be dimmed with leadingedge dimming (because ofthe currents peaks) the dim-ming curve must be set toP1. In this situation the dim-ming performance may bereduced.A compromise betweendimming performance andthe total load that can beconnected has to be decid-ed by the installer.

Lighting Circuit DesignSome general rules have tobe taken into considerationwhen designing lighting cir-cuits.
Ferromagnetic transformersWhen using halogen lightingwith ferromagnetic trans-formers, pay attention to theoutput of the transformers. To maximise efficiency, loadthese transformers with atleast 80% of their normalpower. Pay attention to theoutput of the transformerwhen determining the totalload of the dimmer. Thetransformer has to be suit-able for dimming.
Electronic transformersElectronic transformers pre-sent a capacitive load to thedimmer but if the cablebetween the transformerand the dimmer is significantthis will introduce an addi-tional inductive load, and thedimmer would see a combi-nation of the two types ofload (inductive and capaci-tive).It is recommended that anelectronic transformer isloaded to at least 75% of it’smaximum rated loading, thisreduces the possibility oflamp flicker when dimming,as is common with electron-ic transformers. Refer to themanufacturer’s specifica-tions for the electronic trans-
former being used.Pay attention to the outputof the transformer whendetermining the total load ofthe dimmer (average effi-ciently is around 90%). Thetransformer has to be suit-able for dimming. When a capacitive load isinitially connected there maybe a substantial surge ofcurrent through the primarywinding called the inrushcurrent. This inrush current may lastfor 2-3 seconds and canhave a peak of 10 times theRMS current stated by themanufacturer of the trans-former (this is also valid forCFL fittings). If many electronic transform-
ers are connected in parallel, the value of the total currentis given by the sum of thecurrent peaks generated byeach transformer. If the total inrush current ishigher than 3.5 A, the dim-mer’s hardware short circuitprotection will be activated. As a general rule if the shortcircuit protection is enabled,a total load of 30% of thenominal dimmer outputpower can be connected tothe dimmer (180W@20°C).If the short circuit protectionis disabled, a total load of90% of the nominal dimmeroutput power can be con-nected (540W@20°C).
