Students can choose from a number of undergraduate and graduate programs at WSU-Rochester. WSU-Rochester collaborates with Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) through the Path to Purple program, allowing students to complete a baccalaureate degree by transferring lower-division credits from RCTC and completing upper-level courses. WSU-Rochester is expanding its pathways through articulation agreements with additional institutions.

Advance your careerUndergraduate and Transfer StudentsWSU-Rochester provides the upper division/major courses for baccalaureate degree completion. Undergraduate students enter WSU-Rochester by transfer of credits or degrees from MnSCU and other institutions. Dual enrollment of WSU-Rochester students with other institutions is a common practice. For transfer requirements, please see page 15.

Graduate StudentsThere are tremendous opportunities for graduate study at WSU-Rochester, with more than a dozen degree, advanced licensure, and certificate programs in areas such as counselor education, education leadership, nursing, and more. WSU-Rochester also offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice Program.

WSU-RochesterThe presence of Winona State University in Rochester dates back to 1917. Today, WSU-Rochester serves more than 1,500 students each year. Additionally, 5,000 bachelor’s, graduate, and doctoral degree students have graduated from WSU-Rochester. Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) and WSU-Rochester share the expansive University Center Rochester campus.

Many WSU-Rochester students are non-traditional students. Many have jobs and families, and most are at least of junior-level standing. That rich combination of collegiate and life experiences provides a diverse, mature, and driven community of learners that elevates the academic conversation.

Students are taught, mentored, and led by 36 dedicated Rochester campus-based faculty. Students also have access to 20 visiting faculty who commute from the Winona campus each academic year as well as adjunct faculty from the Rochester professional community. Students benefit from the relationships WSU-Rochester faculty members have cultivated with Rochester employers. Through internships, job shadows, and field and clinical experiences with businesses and organizations such as IBM, Mayo Clinic, Olmsted County Medical Center, Rochester Public Schools, and others, students are able to gain impressive, invaluable hands-on career experience. path to purpleAn innovative path to a bachelor’s degreeWinona State University has partnered with Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) to allow students to begin their education at RCTC, then transfer to WSU or WSU-Rochester and select from several undergraduate programs. This program, known as Path to Purple, is a great option for many students who wish to earn a bachelor’s degree. Students are able to take advantage of the Path to Purple program in a variety of ways:

• Students can directly enroll in RCTC as part of the Path to Purple program to earn a bachelor’s degree awarded by WSU-Rochester. Courses may be delivered through the classroom, interactive television (ITV), and/or online.

• Students can directly enroll in RCTC and work toward a bachelor’s degree offered by WSU on the Winona campus. There is a prescribed time for these students to “leave” the community college and “begin” WSU studies in Winona.

• Students can initially enroll in RCTC and then make independent decisions as to when they want to apply for admission to WSU. WSU’s transfer policy provides flexibility in transferring. See page 15 for transfer requirements.

• Students who do not initially qualify for admission to WSU can enroll in RCTC to gain sufficient academic standing to qualify them for acceptance to WSU.

ScholarshipsMany opportunities exist for transfer students to help fund their WSU-Rochester education through scholarships. Below are a few examples. Find other funding opportunities through your academic colleges and departments or sources outside WSU-Rochester. Application deadlines for most scholarships are May 1 (for fall semester) and November 1 (for spring semester).

Transfer Student Scholarships Transfer students are eligible for academic merit scholarships awarded each fall and spring semester. To be considered, you must have completed 30 semester credits (at the time you apply) from another institution with a cumulative GPA of 3.35 or higher. Various academic disciplines offer additional scholarships for transfer students; please contact your department(s) to learn of additional funding opportunities. Application deadlines are May 1 (for fall semester) and November 1 (for spring semester).

Special Talent and Interest Awards Alumni Society: $1,000 For the child, grandchild, brother, sister, or a ward of a WSU graduate; essay and interview required; limited number given each year.

Cultural Diversity Scholarship Based on academic potential: $350–2,000 Awarded by the Office of Inclusion and Diversity based on academic potential. Visit www.winona.edu/culturaldiversity for more information.

Phi Theta Kappa Academic record; Phi Theta Kappa member; AA Degree: $1,000 Awarded to transfer students who have a community college academic record of 3.5 GPA or higher, are a member of Phi Theta Kappa, and have completed an Associate of Arts Degree.

Unrestricted Financial need/academic potential; must complete the FAFSA: $100–250

Resident Tuition Scholarship Non-resident: approximately $4,800 This scholarship allows non-resident, non-reciprocity students to pay the resident tuition rate. Non-resident, non-reciprocity students with more than 24 transferable credits at a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher will qualify. For non-resident, non-reciprocity students transferring with fewer than 24 transferable credits, freshman standards would apply (25 ACT OR top 15 percent of high school class rank). This scholarship is renewable based on the maintenance of a WSU GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Teachers from Diverse Backgrounds Scholarship Per semester: $500–1,000 If the candidate remains in good standing within the College of Education, makes satisfactory progress at the University, and continues on the path toward becoming a teacher, the scholarship will be awarded each semester with a maximum of $4,000 awarded over the course of the candidate’s time at Winona State University. If you are a junior, senior, or post-baccalaureate student in fall 2012, you must be admitted into the Teacher Education Program or the Teacher Preparation Collaborative at either the Winona or Rochester campus.

Outreach and Continuing EducationThe Outreach and Continuing Education Department (OCED) provides innovative and career-enhancing education experiences for diverse audiences.

• Through our Professional Studies Bachelor of Arts Degree Program, students create a major or minor that specifically meets their unique educational and career needs.

• Summer Session offerings provide students year-around educational opportunities.

• Online, face-to-face, and hybrid credit and non-credit educational programming meets the needs of adult learners wanting to develop skills critical to success in the new economy. In addition, OCED collaborates with organizational development experts from around the region to deliver customized training programs for business and industry.

• OCED works collaboratively with the Counselor Education, Nursing, Social Work, and other WSU departments to identify key topics that meet the needs and interests of our students and working professionals. The topics include diversity, grant writing, wellness, and mental health. The resulting Professional Development Workshops can be taken as a credit elective or non-credit/CEU option.

Transfer requirements for admissionWith 24 or more creditsYou will be eligible for admission if you have 24 or more transferable credit hours at a two- or four-year institution, and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.4.

With less than 24 creditsWhen you have less than 24 transferable college credits, our requirements are the same as if you entered directly from high school: a minimum ACT composite of 21 and a high school rank in the top 2/3 of your graduating class OR an ACT composite of 18–20 and a high school rank in the top half of your graduating class, a minimum cumulative 2.4 GPA from the transferring institution, and completion of the Minnesota State University high school preparation guidelines.

What is WSU’s policy for transferring credits?The Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MNTC) is a cooperative transfer program for all public colleges and universities in Minnesota. For example, if you are transferring to Winona State University from a participating college or university and your transfer school indicates you have satisfied all 10 educational goals of the MNTC (see list of goals at left), we will give you credit for completing all your general education requirements.
