Constance Croker's Photograph Album SM611

Contains ninety three photographs of the Croker family of Lissa and Byblox, Doneraile, their friends, relatives, pet dogs, horses and the Awbeg river. Four prints seem to be earlier in date, possibly taken prior to 1872 when Charles and Martin Croker of Lissa were still alive. Many of the photographs have captions, making identification easier. Constance married Kenneth Weldon in 1906 and he appears in some of the photographs as do Jane, Martha and Charles Croker, Constance's mother and grandparents.

Midleton Estate Report SM620

Report on lands proposed to become part of the estate of Charles Broderick Viscount Midleton in the counties of Cork and Waterford by Edward Woollett Wilmott, Hulme Walfield, Longleton, [England], Land Agent. 'In accordance with instructions received..., I have viewed the Estates situated near Midleton in the county of Cork…'. Enumerates, with accompanying area map, 22 properties totaling c.5074 acres as follows, Cahermore Demesne, Cahermore Deer Park, Killeagh, Dunsfort, Carryshane, Castle Redmond, Broomfield, Coppingerstown, Whiterock, Carriginnoe, Ballyedikin, Butlerstown, Knockangriffin, Garryduffe, Ballyannan Wood, Ballyannan, part of Ballyannan and Barreshae, Gurtenina, Killaroga West, Killaroga East, Balllingtowtas, Farrenthrensure. Area map includes sketch plan of Midleton town. General improvements are proposed such as, water carriage or railway to the town and letting of lands adjacent to the town. Remarks on management of the farms on estate such as, "… found several very good Tenants, enterprising and industrious men, - the generality however were below the mark and many of the holdings too small, and the buildings poor and inadequate in accommodation for the due cultivation of the land." Recommends doing away with all leases 'as opportunities offer' and to use instead an Agreement which would compensate tenants for any 'unexhausted improvements', enabling a tenant 'to expend Capital without fear' (see also pp.67-79). Notes unjust and ruinous effects of subletting; notes buildings could be built less expensively (see also drawings pp.61-62), also draining required in many townlands. Suggests widening of Dungowrney River, drainage of swamp in Dunford (pp1-10). Each townland treated of individually with notes and colour illustrated maps showing features such as, woodlands, quarries, dwellings, boundaries, roads, water features, bogs (pp11-57). Observations on properties in each townland mentioning tenants, physical features, prospects for improvements such as, Broomfield where 'Ellen Leahy's land is in fair condition, should opportunity occur, it should be thrown to the Farm occupied by D.Moore… .' and 'Fever Sheds.. erected in Smithwick's Farm, for which the Union [Midleton Poor Law Union] pay the Tenant £5 per annum…'(pp25-27). Appendices include a sample letting agreement, architectural sketch plans for farm yard and out-buildings, farm houses and cottages (pp61-79). Bound volume in red leather with gold inlay, stamped 'The Earl of Midleton M.C Estate Office, Midleton, Co. Cork.'

White Letter, Athea, Co. Limerick SM621

Letter from E.W. White,[Athea county Limerick or, Belfast] to 'Dear Sir', Water Buildings, Waring Street, Belfast, regarding estate and land ownership matters, referring to the Goold/Versachoyle-Goold estate in Athea, West county Limerick. 'In the North of Ireland we do not realise the extraordinary revolution that is taking place in the South under the Land Purchase Acts…'. The author relates that he intends to review the recent purchase of the estate in order to refute charges of bigotry leveled against the Catholics of the South and to exemplify the changes taking place. Sergeant Goold bought the lands in question from Lord Courtenay in c.1817 and was a life long friend of Daniel O'Connell ('The Liberator'). He was an 'excellent landlord', readjusting through an arbitrator the tenants' rent in the difficult times following the Napoleonic wars. The author states that in later years a son of Sergeant Goold, known as 'The Archdeacon', 'steeped in feudalism…regarded himself as a demigod, and his tenants serfs…', built a church and distributed bibles and religious tracts to the tenants, 'tampering with the religious convictions of the Catholics'. This caused feuds and demoralisation. The Archdeacon also settled the first Protestants in the estate. According to the author, relations have been of the 'most exemplary character' between the two denominations, even in times of trouble. Mentions Fenians, and 'moonlighters'. Notes that in particular Protestant clergyman Canon Vance was very kind to Catholics. Outlines changes to the Goold estate since the sale, with the main house being sold to a tenant.
