A study Plan for A*

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 2Page 2

Why Plan?

“Failing to plan is planning to fail.”

~Alan Lakein

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 3Page 3

What is planning ?

• Planning is bringing the future in to present so that you can do something to make future better than present.

• So what is planning ?

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 4Page 4

What if you had to eat an elephant !!!

• One bite at a time !!!• Of course then you have

to consider all possible bites and

• Prioritize the first bite and follow on.

• That is a simple metaphor of planning.

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 5Page 5

What is planning ?

• We “plan” all the time, perhaps spontaneously as a brain process – but this is being reactive.

• What we want to is to plan consciously and– proactively.

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 6Page 6

What is a planning?

• Planning is the process of thinking about and organizing the activities required to achieve a desired goal.

What is our goal?

• Planning is the process of thinking about and organizing the activities required to achieve a desired goal.

• Nothing but A* in all subjects at the exam?

• Why A*?– It will make me happy.

– It will make my parents’ happy.

– It will make my teachers’ happy.

– It will open opportunities for:

» A good university degree.

» A good profession.

» A happy life.

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 8Page 8

What is our goal?

• The best goal: – Recognize your strength “a giant in you” and– focus on the task at hand (education) and – simply aim to do your best.

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 9Page 9

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 10Page 10

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 11Page 11

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 13Page 13

Is planning only thinking?

• Planning is the process of thinking about and organizing the activities required to achieve a desired goal.

• “To be a poet it is not sufficient to watch and enjoy the beauty of the moon, you need to write down your thoughts of appreciation of moon’s beauty”– The palest ink is stronger than the strongest

memory

• Think on paper/ computer.

What is organizing?

• Planning is the process of thinking about and organizing the activities required to achieve a desired goal.

• Organizing is to identify your activities in relation to a time plan.

• Time is the most irreversible and scarce resource in life.– However we always have enough time if we use

it right.• Time: Life, Year, Month, Week, Day ?• Let us start with a day …

Develop the plan for a day

• Planning is the process of thinking about and organizing the activities required to achieve a desired goal.

• Now think (and write on paper, computer or on your phone organizer) how you could organize the activities to achieve A*.

My Study Plan

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 17Page 17

List your activities during a day

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 18Page 18

List you activities on a time line on getting off bed to getting on to bed.

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 19Page 19

List your study activities on a time line. From day to hours and minutes.

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 20Page 20

Few suggestions …

• Take responsibility for yourself• Recognize that in order to succeed you need to make decisions

about your priorities, your time, and your resources

• Center yourself, around your values and principles

• Don't let friends dictate what you consider important

• Discover your key productivity periods and places

• Morning, afternoon, or evening?

• Find spaces where you can be the most focused and productive.

• Prioritize these for your most difficult study challenges.

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 21Page 21

Few suggestions …

• Should the plan for the day be a linear sequence of activities?– A weird but true exception: Networking.

• Prioritize activities– Studies first

– Tuition

– Must play and meet friends

– Must watch TV and play a Comp game

– Must have a break when I am bored (should I watch TV then?)

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 22Page 22

Few suggestions …

• Think to the detail on study activities (subject wise) and prioritize.– Revision of work done every day

– Homework

– Extra reading

– Relate to curriculum scheme of work prepare for tomorrow.

– Match with your school time table

• A weekly plan may be ideal.

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 23Page 23

Few suggestions …

• Never study within 30 minutes of going to sleep (read a novel)

• Study no more than 45-60 minutes at a stretch, and then take breaks– Attention span of a child is = Age + 2 in minutes. Thus not more than 20 minutes at a

stretch (Principal SLSM, Mr. Somabandhu Kodikara).

• Take breaks away from your desk and do something different

• Try to continue your daily habits as usual (don’t drastically reduce your sleep, eliminate exercise, or overeat)

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 24Page 24

Few questions?

• Should I keep the plan hanging on my neck every day?– Each successful day is a successful week, each

successful week is a month, a year … and finally a successful, blissful life.

• When practice become a habit the plan will be hanging in your mind for ever.

My Study Plan

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 26Page 26

Planning is simple … is it worth

• The time taken to create a plan and habituate it, is well worth it – it will save you much time that could have been lost to, disorganization, stress, and poor results and frustration.

• Personal experience.– OL to AL and University

– Professional life (at least every month and then year)

– Personal life (Failures and successes)

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 27Page 27

Planning is simple … yes do it

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 28Page 28

Start planning for studies now …

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 29Page 29

Planning for the exam

• You would not have to plan for the exam if you had followed daily, weekly and monthly plans.

• Yet some special planning may be necessary.

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 30Page 30

How Do Students Make Studying for an Exam Stressful?

• They have not followed the teacher/class.– Doomed not even tuition can rescue.

• They have unorganized and/or incomplete notes from the course– Always organize your study material:

• If not daily at least weekly• Well filed and shelved

– Have short notes, wall displays• They have not been asking questions along the way to ensure understanding

– Clear doubts, discuss with teachers and peer groups • They don’t budget their time wisely or start studying far enough ahead of time

– Follow a plan specific for study leave and close to exam as per exam time table.• They don’t consider ways to make the most of their studying time

– Less TV and games; switch off the phone; keep the computer switched off if not necessary for studies

• They don’t adjust other priorities during exam time to make the exams their primary focus– Mock exams and working on past papers.

• NONE OF ABOVE ARE TRUE IF YOU FOLLOWED A DAILY PLAN

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 31Page 31

Creating the Right Environment for Studying

– Work somewhere where you will be free of distractions (phone, TV).

– Try to use a space that is YOURS only and doesn’t have to be shared with other family members IF POSSIBLE.

– (5S) Keep the study space organized with a specific place for paper, pens, books etc.

– Have everything you need to study with you before you sit down so you don’t waste time looking for things

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 32Page 32

How to study?

• So many suggestions could be given.

• What troubled me most in studies (at young age) was concentration.

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 33Page 33

The Problem with Concentration: The Mind is Like a Monkey

• At times when you may be trying to study:

– Your mind may wander from one thing to another

• What are these things?

– Take care not to get entangled to these things.

– Your worries may distract you

• What are your worries?

– As children you can not have worries unless you deliberately have created such.

– Outside distractions may take you away from your studies before you know it.

• What are these distractions? TV, Phone, Internet, Music

– Study in a set place that is naturally free of distractions

– You may find the material boring, difficult, and/or not interesting.

• May be. Yet education is the light at the end of tunnel for an enlightened life.

• Meditate on your goal.

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 34Page 34

Concentration Strategies continued…

• Change your study topics every 1-2 hours to keep things interesting

• Vary your study activities – don’t try and study in the same way for more than an hour or so

• Take regular scheduled breaks and enjoy them!

• Give yourself rewards for even small achievements with your studying

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 35Page 35

I have a plan but is never implemented ?

• One reason is procrastination.

• In psychology, procrastination refers to the act of replacing high-priority actions with tasks of lower priority, or doing something from which one derives enjoyment, and thus putting off important tasks to a later time.

• Why do we procrastinate studies? • Is studies bitter?

• Can we procrastinate studies?

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 36Page 36

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 37Page 37

How to overcome procrastination

• Please do realize that we are designed mentally and emotionally in such a way that task completion gives us satisfaction.

– Hence let us do it.

• Just start and the mind heats up, continue and the task will be completed.

– A journey of a thousand leagues begins with a single step.

– Break a big task to small tasks finish each and enjoy the completion of each.

• By the yard it’s hard; but inch by inch anything’s cinch.

– However, resist the temptation to complete easy things first.

Powerpoint TemplatesPage 38Page 38

• Please realize that one of the worst use of time is to do something well that need not be done at all.

• Please ask for supervision on a publicized plan.– Only 2% can work without supervision!!!

• To succeed in completing a task you need 3 qualities.– Decision, Discipline and Determination.
