Publisher-Slot Tech Magazine

Dear Friends of Slot Tech Magazine,

Summer has ended and it’s time to get back to serious work. Here inCalifornia (Slot Tech Magazine is based in San Diego County) there isso much to do in summer that it’s understandable that people arethinking about other things. I sure was.

But now it’s time to move and this month, the entire casino industrymoves to Las Vegas, Nevada for a few days of intense fun research &training at the Global Gaming Expo.

For us technicians, there is a component to the G2E of which mostpeople are completely unaware: We can meet the manufacturers’technicians that are on hand at the booths. Generally speaking, theOEMs send their crack team to the expo. It’s extremely difficult workfor them as they must set the machines, operate them during theshow (there are many fires that need to be put out with brand-newmachines and special “show” software) and strike the setup, allwithin five days. But in my experience, they’re always glad to meetother techs and to show them their “latest and greatest.” It’s likehaving a private guided tour. Pretty neat.

For many years, readers have seen advertisements in Slot TechMagazine for CasinoTech. We even ran a feature article about thecompany, which specializes in parts and service. They are the “go to”guys for some of your more difficult repairs or when you are pressedfor time and that pile of bad power supplies isn’t getting any smaller.

I received a request from CasinoTech that I run an op-ed piece oftheirs regarding the purchase of used parts. To be honest with you, Inever really thought too much about used casino gear. I just assumedthat it all went south of the border or into the hands of homeownerswith a slot machine in their basement. I have published it, unedited,in this issue. Please note that the opinions expressed are those ofCasinoTech and not necessarily those of Slot Tech Magazine.

On the flip side, as I was laying out the magazine and dropping in theaforementioned editorial, I received a request for advertising informa-tion from (you guessed it) a supplier of used parts! They wanted to runan advertisement in the “show issue” of the magazine and alsocontribute future technical articles. Naturally, I jumped at the chanceto have another source of technical articles and so this month, wewelcome Ellary Gaming to the Slot Tech Magazine family.

One more thing. I have a regional slot tech class planned for Decem-ber 6-9, 2016 at the Blue Lake Casino in northern California. Detailsare on the website at slot-techs.com.

See you at the casino.

WMS BB2 Power SupplyWMS BB2 Power SupplyWMS BB2 Power SupplyWMS BB2 Power SupplyWMS BB2 Power SupplyQuick FixQuick FixQuick FixQuick FixQuick Fix

I received a WMS BB2power supply (UNI-750-1) on the “need re-

paired” shelf that wastagged “no power to ma-chine.” Just by taking apeek at the cooling fan, Icould tell right away the

unit was very dusty inside. The six small screwsneeded to be removed andthe cover removed to blowall of the dust out of it.With a little luck the powersupply overheated and shutdown without cooking anycomponents. After blowingit out and cleaning it up abit, the cooling fan did notspin very easily by handwhich meant there was agood chance it did overheat.A bad fan + lots of dust =excess heat.

Next, I took a visual of all ofthe components to see ifthere were any items thatappeared bad, such as aburned resistor, domedcapacitors, blown fuse orburned transistor. Nothinglooked fried or bad sopower was applied. Thecooling fan was definitelybad, it did not sound goodat all but since it was spin-ning, I knew I had at least12vdc somewhere in thepower supply because thefan had power. A new fanwas installed and this timeI randomly checked differ-ent pins of the DC outputconnectors to check forvoltage. Sure enough, I didin fact have 24v, 5v and 12v.I left the unit on for about

10 minutes, then tested itin a game. My theory wascorrect. It overheated be-cause of a bunch of dustand a bad cooling fan. Nowit can go on the spare partsshelf (From what I read, common replacement partsare Q5, Q6, D2, D3, D5,and D6 on the UNI-750-1).

held in reset, chip U2might not be in correctly ormay be bad. These LEDseven-segment displays areon the “Viridian” greencolor main board, redboard, the “Arc” (such as“Walking Dead”) along withthe Aristocrat “Helix” modelmain boards.

We had an IGT with a MLD(multi-level display, Kortekmodel KTL220MD-03) thatthe touch screen would notcalibrate correctly. Orshould I say “wouldn’t workproperly” because in cali-bration mode I could touchthe cross hairs just fine. Intouch screen test mode theupper right hand side ofthe screen would not workat all. Some of the normalor obvious things I checkedfor were a dirty screen, scratches on screen, a looseUSB touch screen connec-tor on both the LCD sideand game side, (even adifferent USB port was triedon the I/O board) and thegame I/O board was re-seated. Numerous calibra-tions were attempted butnothing worked. Maybe asmall amount of pressurewas being put on the oppo-site side of the screen thatwasn’t working? Pressureon the lower left side maycause the upper right handside not to work. No suchluck there either. I veryslightly loosened the LCDmounting screws to possi-bly release the mounting

bezel away from the unitbut this didn’t help.

It looked like the LCD hadto be replaced with a spare. After a little time of dis-assembly, then re-assem-bly, aligning everything upso I could put some mount-ing bolts in it so it wouldn’tfall on the floor, It was timeto turn the game back ONand make sure the touchscreen worked as it should.Sure enough, it workedperfectly in calibrationmode, test mode and ofcourse, during game play.

I was called to an Aristocrat“Helix” game (one of theirnewer models) in which Iwas told the bill acceptorwas dead. The JCM i-

VIZION unit was swappedwith the game next doorbut it was still dead in theoriginal game. In otherwords, the problem waswithin the game, not thebill acceptor. One thingthat I noticed was therewere not any open doormessages changing on thescreen. Usually on Aristo-crat games, it will display“main door open” then“belly door open” then “billacceptor door open.” To me,it looked like the game wasfrozen. Directly after areboot, the bill acceptorbezel lit right up as itshould have. No doubt ithad been frozen andneeded a reboot. The nextquestion is why did thegame freeze up? I will keepan eye and ear open to seeif it does it again anytimesoon.

When the board is in a game, a “normal” display will read “FF.”The small dot on the left part of the display indicates good powersupply voltage, while the other dot shows good board volts.

I received a complaint thata few of our quarter IGTstepper games weren’taccepting tickets. With theuse of my Oasis mechaniccard, under the diagnosticstab, communication lookedgood and a yellow or redborder was not around theOasis display. Communica-tion wasn’t an issue. Itested a ticket a few timeson a few games, theyworked perfectly. Accepted, cashed out and acceptedagain. Maybe the customerhad a poorly printed barcode on the ticket he wasusing? After talking to afloor supervisor, the indi-vidual stated some of thegames located in that par-ticular area must have“reject residual credit”option enabled, whichmeans if a ticket for $1.55is inserted into a quarterdenomination game, it willreject it because of the “odd5 cent” amount. If the cus-tomer had a ticket for$1.50, the game shouldhave accepted it. This time, the problem wasn’t a ma-chine, system or communi-cation problem. It was adenomination issue. WhenI get free time, I will have tocheck the games in thatarea and set the option to“accept residual credits.”

I was told that one of thebar top games had a buttonissue. All of the buttons

would work in test modebut not in game mode. It issomewhat unusual for a bargame as most are videopoker, this one has twovideo slot themes. One is“Diamonds of Athens” theother is “Secrets of theForest”.

First of all, why not tryplaying the game as if acustomer to see what isgoing on? From what I hadbeen told, the button wir-ing harness had been re-placed, the hard drive re-placed and the RAM wascleared. Anyway, $3.00 in“promo cash” was down-loaded into the credit meterwith the theme “Diamondsof Athens” selected. Whatthe? With a few spins withpressing buttons, every-thing looked fine. Morecredits were downloaded totest all of the buttons andall worked great. However, when selecting the “Secretsof the Forest” theme, NONEof the main five playerbuttons even lit up. Theydid not light and they didnot work. Something in theback of my mind told me tocheck the “easy bet” gameoption which is locatedwithin the setup tab indiagnostics. Kind of weirdbut both themes were set at“easy bet disabled.” Sincethere is only one row ofbuttons, I’m not really surehow the “Diamonds” themeworked unless it is pro-grammed into the themewith only an easy bet op-tion. My theory was to“enable easy bet 5 button”option for both themes. An

E-key 7 is needed alongwith access to the brainbox. With options set, thegame was closed, promocash was downloaded onceagain and it was time to seeif I was correct. Sureenough, when selectingEITHER theme, all of theplayer buttons lit up andworked perfectly. Simply anincorrect option was se-lected during set-up afterRAM was cleared.

Slot Tech Guest Editorial-CasinoTech

As the 2016 G2E rap-idly approaches,gaming industry

service providers are pre-paring to showcase theirlatest and greatest offer-ings. It is therefore crucialthat slot departments makeinformed decisions on thegoods and services that willimpact the casino businessnext year. One of the prin-cipal challenges confront-ing the industry is thegrowing shift in the use of“used” slot parts to repairgames on the floor.Whether this trend willyield true cost savings, orpose an inevitable problem,is a critical question to

which industry leaders arenow seeking a response.A Growing Area of ConcernThe emergence of small, fly-by-night players into thismarket is becoming a grow-ing area of concern, as theydo not offer the qualityassurance provided byleaders in the space. Thus, the more widespread utili-zation of “used” slot partsfrom these less reputablestart-ups could result inimmediate failures or short-term failures, or causefailures in other parts ofthe machine.

The most significant conse-quence is that “When a

casino purchases a ‘used’part without warranty, it isdestined to prematurely failand cause games to quitworking,” says AdamMoeller, Purchasing Man-ager at CasinoTech, one ofthe leading players in thismarket.

In terms of game reliability, leading used parts provid-ers such as CasinoTech,Patriot and SuzoHapp areworking hard to ensurethat “used” is not equatedwith “sub-par” quality. “Wedon’t want to be thejunkyard,” Phil Kostka,CasinoTech’s Service Man-ager, says. “Our customers

know that what they’regetting from us is a refur-bished product…We notonly test, we replace criticalwear & tear parts and burnthem in as needed …Weactually spend time with it,not just clean it.”

Addressing The “Used”Addressing The “Used”Addressing The “Used”Addressing The “Used”Addressing The “Used”IssueIssueIssueIssueIssue

So what is the solution tothe so-called “used” issue?Moeller says the availabilityof these premium refur-bished parts presents sucha solution. “These parts arecleaned, tested, and refur-bished by qualified techni-cians, come with warrantyand are packaged properly.”And these parts can be asaffordable as other offeringsfrom less reputable firms.A commitment to providingcustomers innovative solu-tions supported by superiorcustomer service, which inturn improves their profit-ability, grounds

SuzoHapp’s approach tothis emerging challenge.“Our customers trust usand that is what fuels themto buy from us. Fly-by-night start-ups confuse themarket into thinking thatrefurbished or used prod-ucts are not to be trusted,”Marriell Martinez, Market-ing Manager at SuzoHapp, says. “You really have to goto a trusted company likeSuzoHapp to allow you thatpeace of mind that theproduct will work,” sheadded.

Patriot Gaming is likewise

seeking to respond to thegrowing demand for “used”slot parts in the face of theproliferation of the lessreputable start-ups, and inresponse to the need forcasinos to keep older gamesrunning even as manufac-turers discontinue makingthe parts that keep themrunning. “We test every-thing. We go through used, refurbed and tested parts. You can basically buy threeof those compared to one ofthe new,” Mark Nocco, VP,Patriot Gaming & Electron-ics, says.

This problem is especiallyimpacting slot tech manag-ers and techniciansthroughout the industry.Michael White, Senior SlotRepair Bench Technicianfor MGM Circus Circus inLas Vegas, says, “We stickwith the bigger vendors, because if it’s a new start-up vendor that means ittakes a while for them toget approval, and it usuallytakes several weeks forthem to send things over.By that time we alreadyhave the parts from some-where else.” He added, “I’vegot to go with what keepsour casino running. I can’tsit there and wait for theseguys.”

CasinoTech: A Two-DecadeTrack Record of ExcellenceFor nearly two decades,CasinoTech’s people-cen-tered and quality drivenethos has provided its cus-tomers with 1) the highestquality products 2) at rea-sonable prices 3) in optimal

delivery lead-time. In thisway, the company haspositioned itself on thecutting edge in providingrefurbishing used parts forthe gaming industry.

Recognizing market reali-ties and focusing on opti-mizing the quality of itsproducts and services giventhese realities, is at thecore of CasinoTech’s ap-proach. In strong contrastto the message conveyed byless reputable start-ups,CasinoTech does not regard“low cost” and “high quality”as contradictory. For thisreason, “casinos have confi-dence in us and in ourproduct,” Moeller said.Robert Davies, Slot Perfor-mance Manager at GrandSierra Nevada, says, “Casi-noTech gives me the bestprices and service. Anyissues that I have they takecare of promptly and effi-ciently.”

CasinoTech’s response tothese challenges is “to sellthe highest quality equip-ment that we can at thepricing that’s available tothe market,” Moeller con-tinued. “In the gamingindustry, a lot of it is aboutprice,” Kimberly Wilding,CasinoTech’s Sales Man-ager, added. “We have to bewithin their budget.”This is especially important,as casinos are seeking tosave costs by opting not tobuy new parts from the

manufacturers in order tokeep their games running.Whether manufacturershave discontinued makingthese parts, or, if they stilldo, at too high a price, casinos need to keep oldergames running. It is pre-cisely here that the growingdemand for “used” partscome into play- a demandthat CasinoTech standsvigorously ready to meet.“We feed off of what ourcustomers are asking for,”Wilding says, “We’re becom-ing a one-stop-shop for ourcustomers.”

CasinoTech is committed tocontinuing to send outbetter quality products thatare fully refurbished andrefurbished by certified andhighly-skilled technicians. This directly responds tothe needs of clients such asMGM Circus Circus, forinstance. “Of the things Ibuy refurbed, I buy ticketprinters, LCDs, CPUs…itruns the gamut,” MichaelWhite said.

A key example ofCasinotech’s response tothe needs of such custom-ers is the choice- unlikesome of its peers- not todabble in the used-testedmarket. Instead, “We areutilizing our tech shop andqualified technicians toproduce refurbished prod-ucts and sell them at closeto the same rate as othercompanies are selling theused products for andoffering the best warrantyin the business,” Moellersays.

CasinoTech’s commitmentto an across-the-board,pervasive quality standardmeans that the product notonly has to be clean andfunctional but its packaginghas to be of the highestquality.

Customer-Centered,Customer-Centered,Customer-Centered,Customer-Centered,Customer-Centered,Quality-FocusedQuality-FocusedQuality-FocusedQuality-FocusedQuality-Focused

Throughout its nearly two-decade history, CasinoTechhas worked hard to perfectthis customer-centeredquality standard. “We werea monitor company foryears and years. So whatwe’ve done is bring keypeople on board to not onlygive us the training neces-sary but to also write theSOPs needed to ensurethat the product is always

the same going out thedoor,” Kostka says.By keeping its fingers onthe pulse of the gamingindustry, CasinoTech con-tinues to dynamically re-spond to its customers. “Wedefine our success by thesuccess of our valuablecustomers and the ease inwhich they receive service,”says Richard Landry,Founder and CEO.

Thus, recognizing the needfor innovative responses toenable its customers to besuccessful is at the heart ofthe company’s mission.“We’re constantly develop-ing new products and look-ing for new products. Wewant to be on the cuttingedge of the technology,”Moeller says.

Whether the growing trendof using “used” slot partsrepresents an opportunityto achieve true savings- orposes an inevitable problemfor the casino sector- de-pends on whom gamingsector leaders choose toprovide these products. Aswe have seen, many of thenewer start-up companiesdo not ensure high quality, optimal delivery lead-timeand superior customerservice. The leading SlotDepartment providers, onthe other hand, work hardto match the quality of theirofferings with the pace ofthis trend- and CasinoTechis leading the pack.

This year’s G2E will featurethe key services and offer-ings of the gamingindustry’s leading SlotDepartment providers.Unlike many of the new, smaller entrants into thisspace, each has engaged ina close read of the currentstate of the casino industry. As we’ve seen, tighter bud-gets and longer-servingmachines have yielded anincreased demand for“used” parts. Quality test-ing and optimal customerservice are among the keymethods these major pro-viders are utilizing to en-sure that “used” is notequated with “lower qual-ity.”

A tireless commitment tothese objectives, and a

continual dedication toimprovement, is why Casi-noTech continued to be aleader in the global gamingindustry. “We honor, serveand support each of ourcustomers in every call, saleor repair we make,” Landrysays.
