IT IS CHEAPER TO GIVE AN APARTMENT TO HOMELESS THAN TO PAY FOR EMERGENCY SERVICESHOW IT BEGAN? NYC spent $40,500 in annual costs on every homeless person with mental problemsLeaders did brainstorming, and social researcher, Sam Tsemberis came up with simple, cost-effective method of ending chronic homelessness.

“Give homes to the homeless”

ROUNDTABLE QUESTION 1: CAN ME MOVE FROM DEPENDENCY TO INDEPENDENCE?

With an estimated 500,000 veterans homeless at some time during the year, Veterans Administration reaches 20% of those in need, leaving 400,000 veterans without supportive services. Veterans’ VA payments does not meet COST OF HOUSING in Las CrucesTHEREFORE – MAKE HOMES TINY and AFFORDABLE

UTAH TO END HOMELESSNESS How did Utah accomplish this? Simple. Utah solved homelessness by giving people homes. In 2005, Utah figured out that the annual cost of E.R. visits and jail stays for homeless people was about $16,670 per person, compared to $11,000 to provide each homeless person with an apartment and a social worker” UTAH is giving away apartments, no strings attached. Each participant works with a caseworker to become self-sufficient, but if they fail, they still get to keep their apartment.
