New Jersey Fallen Service MemberTree Memorial Ceremony Picatinny Arsenal
On June 13, 2015, I had the honor of representing Commandant Robert Beck and The LCLPRobert J. Slattery Detachment at the New Jersey Fallen Service Members Ceremony. It was an impressivededication for the families of those who have given their lives since September 11, 2011. This solemnobservance commenced in 2008 dedicating 119 trees to those who lost their lives through 2007 includingOperations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and New Dawn. As of 2014, 174 memorial trees are nowplanted on the installation in memory of New Jersey’s fallen service members. Each spring the traditioncarries on honoring the fallen service members from the previous year. Moreover, the red oak was chosenbecause it is our state tree. It represents the heroic measures these service members freely made for theircountry and commitment to duty.
This year as we entered Linder Conference Center, Army Brigadier General Patrick W. Burdenwelcomed guests and family members. While waiting in the gathering area, I greeted many friends atPicatinny both civilian and military. I had the pleasure of visiting with Cheryl & Ray Doltz, parents of ArmySgt. Ryan Doltz. Also attending were Slattery detachment members Shirley & Nino Parrello, parents ofLCLP Brian Parrello.

New Jersey Fallen Service MemberTree Memorial Ceremony Picatinny Arsenal
Continued from page #9
The ceremony started at exactly 0930 hours with heartfelt remarks given by General Burden following wasa moving rendition of our National Anthem sung by Mrs. Saveria Campanile. Proceeding, Major Patrick D.Farrell read the names of all 174 New Jersey Fallen Service Members with a complete reverence from theauditorium. As typically played during any military funeral honors, a 21-gun salute, a bagpipe rendition of"Amazing Grace" and bugle playing "Taps" were included with an Armed Forces Medley. At the conclusion, the families were transported to the Memorial Tree location. Here, the red oak trees had been planted witha granite marker inscribed with the name of each New Jersey’s fallen service members from the prior year.
I chose not to accompany the families; I paid my respects earlier, quietly before the ceremony. As I walkedthrough out the site I replaced some old worn out small flags with new ones. It was a time for reflection andto collect my thoughts. I decided to sit on one of the benches and noticed everything from the perfectlymanicured grass to immaculate kept granite markers. I watched as soldiers made last minute preparationsat the tree sites. Civilian workers surveyed the area to see what needed attention. No matter who passed, Iexpressed my sincere thank you and job well done. This is a solemn and sacred area. To look out acrossthe landscape and see all these beautiful majestic trees and know what sacrifice was given to beholdthem. As each tree matures it is a symbol of strength and endurance, for the families healing, for their lostloved one, for their country.
Whenever you have the opportunity to be a visitor at Picatinny Arsenal I wholeheartedly recommendpaying tribute with your reflections and prayers at this significantly inspiring Tree Memorial site.

Part of the entertainment for the day was a performance contest called the "American Flag Day Super-Patriot." The contest was run through the School of Rock in Somerville and these musical performersdemonstrated their patriotism while showcasing their talents.

Gunny,
Thank you and your team of Marines so much for performing your moving reenactment at Flag Day Festival. This was my absolutefavorite part of the entire day! And I received many other comments from people in attendance who enjoyed it very much as well.
The shells being fired remind us of the cost of freedom as the reenactment brings this momentous event to a younger generation. Wehope that you are able to come back next year - we have tentatively scheduled June 11 for the event and June 12 as the rain date. Thankyou for your efforts to keep this important event in the minds of our citizens on Flag Day and throughout the year.
Regards, Michael Minaides
