Crossrail wins prestigious safetyaward for training delivered byHavering College

Following a successful partnership betweenCrossrail and us at Havering College, onTuesday 18th June 2013 we delivered 7hours of Driver CPC training to the 5000thCrossrail driver, Daniel Gannon.

CROSSRAIL has received an awardfrom the Institution of OccupationalSafety & Health Practitioner (IOSH) forits lorry driver training programmedelivered by Havering College.

IOSH has recognised Crossrail at itsannual Safety & Health Practitioner (SHP)awards by awarding the trophy for BestAchievement in Transport & Logistics. Theawards, now in their sixth year, honourthe endeavour and achievement ofhealth and safety practitioners up anddown the country, both at an individualand organisational level.

The IOSH SHP judges praised Crossrail’slogistics initiatives which are designed tominimise the risks associated with largegoods vehicles working on the project.These include translating road-safety

information into 18 languages, holdinglegal awareness seminars, improvingjunctions near the work sites and a lorry-driver training programme (LDIT).

Crossrail has now trained over 5,000drivers through 224 LDIT courses as part ofits health and safety 'Target Zero' policy.

The judges commented that the LDITwas an excellent example of a practicalinitiative aimed at a real and presentdanger that could see real results.

Crossrail Driver Training Programmemanager Mick Heduan said: “This is verymuch a team effort between Crossrail,Havering College and our Contractorsinvolving many dedicated people whoare passionate about improving roadsafety and making this a safe project forLondon’s vulnerable road users.”

LEGISLATIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Driver CPC (periodic training)“98% OF ATTENDEES SAID CPC TRAINING DELIVERED BYHAVERING COLLEGE HAS MADE THEM BETTER DRIVERS”Driver CPC will affect all passenger transport drivers no matter howinfrequently they drive professionally when receiving pay.All drivers must have completed 35 hours of Driver CPCtraining by 9 September 2013.

WE CAN DELIVER: ● On-site and off-site delivery● Day or night training to suit the hours of your employees● Split the training into 3.5 hour segments ● Organise course days arranged exclusively for your drivers

MODULE CHOICES INCLUDE:● Safety and security of load, self and others (QCF credits available)

Legislation regarding operating requirements, health and safety withinthe sector to protect yourself, vehicle and load. Looking at potentialsecurity risks and ways to illuminate or reduce risks. Effective routeplanning to support safety and security.

● Handling goods and materials (including manual handling certification)Discussions and explanations covering how to safely prepare vehicles forloading, forms and types of restraints in requirement for the load, use oftwist locks. Preparing the vehicle for unloading when at destination aswell as reviewing and preparing documentation required for the vehicleand load. Reviewing the various authorities involved within thetransportation of loads as well as health and safety regulations attainingto moving of loads.

● Sharing London's roads Providing relevant information to raise the awareness levels ofprofessional freight drivers in regards to sharing London’s roads withvulnerable road users.

● Route planning in London for Safe and Fuel Efficient DrivingBeing a driver in London today can be a challenge. In this module weexplore the issues surrounding restrictions on weights and heights ofvehicles, low emission zones, congestion charging, bridge permissions,tunnels and ferries, as well as permits required. So what happens is youcome across delays and diversions. The last part of the modules dealswith route finding and ensuring efficient use of fuel.

● Pre and Post Vehicle Checks including the reporting of defectsEnsuring drivers are satisfactorily trained to complete pre and post vehiclechecks to the required standard using appropriate documentation and inline with legislative compliance and ensuring fuel efficiency. In additionto vehicle checks ensuring vehicle and load documentation is completedcorrectly.

● Health and Safety Ensuring up to date knowledge in regards to health, safety and welfare.What are the employees rights and responsibilities in comparison to theemployers. What is a risk assessment and how should it be used andconducted within day to day duties of a driver. In addition to ensuringyour knowledge is up to date you will also be offered the opportunity togain a Level 2 nationally recognised certificate. Should you wish you willbe able to take the short test requiring you to answer 35 questions frommultiple choice answers. 75% is required to successfully gain theadditional qualification.

● Emergency First Aid (practical training)Complete a practical Emergency First Aid training course and ensure youknow what to do when you next come across a road traffic accident.Should you wish to complete a short practical assessment and multiplechoice assessment then you can also gain your Emergency First Aidcertificate.

● Drivers Hours and Tachograph TrainingDo you know the differences in legislation between domestic andEuropean hours? Which do you work by? What does the latest legislationsay? What constitutes other work compared to rest? What are thecommon problems with digital tachographs you should be aware of?What is the correct procedural use of digital tachographs when it is a twoman crew?

● Lift Truck Refresher Training Need to renew your counterbalance or reach truck licence? Then why notundertake the training course but count it towards your Driver CPCtraining as well? That’s two tasks completed in one!

● Lift Truck Novice Licence Been meaning to complete your counterbalance or reach truck licence?Then why not undertake the RTITB training course but count it towardsyour Driver CPC training as well? That’s 21 hours of Driver CPC completedand a new qualification completed in one!

● Operator CPC Update/refresher training (14 hours)Please see pages 9 and 10 for the course relevant to your sector.

● Customer ServiceExploring what customer service is, who out customer are is and whatthey want/expect from us as drivers. The different types of customersand how we communicate with them, meeting the customer’sexpectations as well as exploring effective techniques when dealing withdifficult customers.

The Operator’s Licence is a legal requirement for anyone wishing to entertransport management within fleet management and transport operations.

Paper B consists of four long answer/case study type questions (three to beanswered), requiring longer answers in the form of an essay or a morelengthy calculation. This part will test application of knowledge of bothnational and international areas of the standards.

Passenger Transport Operator -Certificate of Professional CompetenceWE CAN DELIVER:● Introduction day to the course prior to starting to understand what is

required of candidates● Block delivery over two weeks● One evening per week over 12 weeks● An introduction day prior to start of course● Revision days available

The objective of this qualification is for individuals to obtain the competence requirements for a transport manager as laid out in regulation(EC) No 1071/20091.

It is aimed at individuals who wish to become transport managers ordemonstrate their professional competence to meet operator licensingrequirements.

On successful completion of this course, the students will have been updatedon recent legislative changes and operator obligations as well as haverefreshed some of the key CPC subject areas which are vital to effective andcompliant passenger transport operations and raised awareness of currentbest practices.

This course aims to increase drivers’ awareness of safety, health, andenvironmental issues at work and to encourage safe behaviour during thecollection and delivery of quarry materials and products.

It is suitable for drivers who are require to hold the MPQC (EPIC) Driver SkillsCard, except where they can obtain it through an MPQC Approved equivalentcourse, and all drivers of tippers, truck mixers, flatbed trucks and dry powdertankers who want to increase their awareness of safety.

At the end of the day candidates will undertake a multiple-choiceassessment. Those delegates who successfully complete the course will beawarded the MPQC Driver Skills Card.

HEALTH, SAFETY AND FIRST AIDWork related accidents within the storage and warehousing industry remainmajor concern, with many thousands of RIDDOR reportable incidentsrecorded each year. With the four most common accidents being falls fromvehicles, hit by moving vehicles, manual handling as well as slips and trips,past evidence has proven these can be greatly reduced by ensuring staffreceive suitable training.

Safety Passport – LogisticsCOURSE DURATION:One day

The aim of the course is to understand the implications for cost, business, jobsecurity and risk of injury if concerns for the environment and health andsafety are not properly considered.

On completion of the course candidates will have the knowledge to:

This course is suitable for those within supervisory position.

With serious concerns regarding an aging workforce and difficulty in fillingvacancies, Havering College is acting proactively to find, train and ensurereadiness of the next generation of workers for the transport and logistics sector.

SUCCESSION PLANNING AND APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMMES

WHY THE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME INSTEAD OF THEQUALIFICATION ONLY?Because apprentices receive specific sector relevant training they can havean immediate effect on your business and make a significant contribution byfilling your skills gap. You also have the opportunity to input into theirtraining programme ensuring you identify the skills you specifically wantthem trained to complete.

Apprenticeships ensure more competent, better trained staff, who canimprove your productivity and make your organisation more competitive.

They are designed to help your employees reach their full potential andbecause they are structured and require commitment you’ll find apprenticesmore disciplined from the start.

HOW DO THEY WORK?The employer provides on–the-job training and is responsible for the wagesand employment costs as the apprentice is their employee. The apprenticewill attend college one day per month and when in the workplace will worktowards producing a qualification portfolio. This portfolio contains evidence oftheir work which they will complete within the course of their normal duties.The assessor would visit the student for about one hour every fortnight toensure tutorial support and assess their work produced in the workplace.

This part of the programme can be started at anytime during the year andthe students get up to 15 months to complete all units.

In addition Havering College provides off-the-job training which is for 28weeks. This includes:

HOW DO I FIND A SUITABLE APPRENTICE?An employer representative from the college will be able to help, supportand guide you in finding a suitable apprentice. You may already havesomeone in mind within your current workforce or if you need to recruit asuitable person then we can help you to advertise the vacancy and selectthe most appropriate applicants.

FUNDINGApprenticeship funding is available from the National Apprenticeship Service.The size of the contribution varies depending on your sector and the age ofthe candidate. If the apprentice is aged 16–18 years old, they receive 100per cent of the cost of the training; if they are 19-24 years old, they willreceive up to 50 per cent; if they are 25 years old or over they may only geta contribution depending on the sector and area in which you operate. The employer will be asked to make a contribution to the cost of the trainingfor apprentices over the age of 19.

If you have a group of 10 apprentices (or more) within your company,on the same apprenticeship programme then we will be able to deliverat a venue of your choice.

INTERMEDIATE APPRENTICESHIPS (LEVEL 2) It is expected candidates on an Intermediate Apprenticeship should completetheir apprenticeship within approximately 12 months. One day per month toattend off-the-job training will be required.
