4. Planning – Assessment Schedule

Table 2. Program Planning Cycle Assessment Schedule – Baccalaureate Program

PLO’s 1-12 All outcomes assessed annually via Capstone Clinical Course (N 148A).

PLO’s 1-12 First time pass rates on the NCLEX-RN. Data are collected each semester.

NCLEX-RN results are received from the California Board of Registered Nursing quarterly. Results are filed in the nursing office and are available to faculty for review. Program learning outcomes are measured in the Capstone Clinical Course (NURS 148A) for every student in that course, every semester. This information is filed in the student’s file in the nursing office. Implementation of changes and re-assessment are based on findings. Major curricular changes may take up to 1 ½ years to implement due to current University policies/procedures and the cohort model of the curriculum. 5. Student Experience Baccalaureate PLOs are posted on TVFSON website “quick link” at: http://www.sjsu.edu/nursing/docs/BA%20Nursing%20SLOs_16.pdf. Program Learning Outcomes are included in the Student Handbook. Each nursing course syllabus links the course objectives to the PLOs. The Program Learning Outcomes were developed after intensive review of the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accreditation standards, California Board of Registered Nursing Rules and Regulations, American Nurses Association guidelines, and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing licensure examination blueprint. Student input was not solicited. Student representatives participate in semester level curriculum meetings and provide input regarding courses, curriculum issues, policies and procedures, clinical sites, etc. Part B

6. Assessment Data and Results

A) First time National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) pass rates are obtained from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). First time pass rates continue to improve. In the 2nd Quarter of 2016 a small group of our graduates (N = 7) achieved a 100% pass rate. Our annual first time pass rate for 2015-2016 was 92%. Some graduates are still experiencing delays in having their testing applications processed. The length of time graduates waited before taking the exam ranged from 1 – 8 months). TVFSON NCLEX-RN pass rate for the 4th quarter of 2016 is 92.31% (N = 13).

Data are reviewed regularly by the Director, Curriculum Coordinating/Content Experts Committee, the Executive Committee and shared with Full Faculty.

B) Successful Completion of Capstone Clinical Course (NURS 148A) The NURS 148A senior preceptorship/project course objectives are the PLOs and are reflected on the clinical evaluation tool. Students must apply theoretical knowledge and specialized skills in the clinical setting. Pass rates for this course for the previous 5 semesters are shown below (Note: Summer NURS 148A students are included in Fall data). Data are tracked every spring and reviewed by the Curriculum Coordinator and the Semester 6 Chair. Issues with course pass rates are addressed at the next Curriculum Committee meeting.

7. Analysis: 6-A) Annualized pass rates remain above California Board of Registered Nursing and CCNE standards. Results shared with Full Faculty. Recommended Actions: Continue to monitor pass rates and discuss at Curriculum, Executive, and Full Faculty meetings. Establish a formal remediation program for students at risk based on theory grades and HESI standardized achievement examination scores. 6-B) Recommended Actions: No planned changes to course. Faculty members are developing a detailed rubric for evaluating student projects.

8. Proposed changes and goals (if any) Discussed developing a formal student remediation plan based on HESI assessment results across curriculum at nursing curriculum meeting 2/13/2017. Action Items: Re-convene Remediation Task Force to develop a) TVFSON testing policy and procedure; and b) standardized, student-driven remediation policy and procedure and a standardized testing policy and procedure during Spring 2017 semester.

Part C

Proposed Changes and Goals Status Update

Faculty Remediation Task Force is looking at requiring additional critical thinking exercises (case studies), and increasing test taking practice using HESI standardized examinations for at-risk students.

As Above. Addressed the need to develop a formal student remediation plan based on HESI assessment results across curriculum at nursing curriculum meeting 2/13/2017. Action Items: Re-convene Remediation Task Force to develop a) TVFSON testing policy and procedure; and b) standardized, student-driven remediation policy and procedure during Spring 2017 semester. Lead for Task Force identified 2/13/2017.

Succession Planning Continue to mentor tenure track and non-tenure track faculty members into leadership roles. Failed search for 2 faculty positions during Fall 2016. Recruiting efforts continue Spring 2017. Several faculty members are planning to retire within the next 3 years thus recruiting/hiring qualified faculty is of critical importance.

Global Studies Initiative a) Global Studies committee in conjunction with the CASA Assoc. Dean made the decision to offer international clinical experiences through FLP and Special Sessions during summer term. b) Ireland and Grenada groups scheduled for Summer 2017.

Home Hospital Initiative Plan to survey students again Spring 2017 and to seek additional feedback from agencies.

HESI Implementation (HESI is a

software-based testing company

that produces standardized and

customized learning materials

and tests for nursing students to

enhance learning and success.)

Skills faculty reviewed available case studies across curriculum and identified some redundancies. Plan to align HESI case studies and Virtual Simulation (VSim) activities so there is no overlap and appropriate progression for Fall 2017 semester.

Major Curriculum Revision Undertaking baccalaureate curriculum revision to achieve 4 year

program. Implementation date: Fall 2019.
