FROM THE STUDY WINDOW Hi everyone,
By the time this reaches you I shall have been ‘ Instituted and inducted” at Sandhurst Church as the new Rector of the Seven Towers Benefice, sounds painful! I am hoping it isn’t!
I might have seen your face there…I might not, either way I look forward to putting names to those faces and seeing new faces and making new friends, whether you are ‘church’ people or not!
I look forward to working with you all in the building of a world where God’s will is done, you don’t have to be ‘religious’’ to do that.
As I was praying this morning, I was struck by the reading from the Old Testament (2 Chronicles 2.1-16) it recounts Solomon sending a letter to the king of Tyre asking for his support with the building of God’s house and we hear that King Huram who had helped Solomon’s Father David, was glad to help and saw his involvement as part of an ongoing partnership.
Building the temple spanned two generations and required co-operation across kingdoms as well as across land and sea. It took the pooling of a wide range of skills and varieties of materials.
I would love it if you and I could see ourselves as partners in building a world (starting with our communities) where God is at home, where his will is being done. Where friendships are being built, where generosity and hospitality is flowing, where no –one is left outside, no one is marginalized. Where we all as God’s children can flourish and grow and be all he ever intended us to be.
It requires co-operation across our own little kingdoms, be they our homes, our places of work, of leisure, our places of worship, and the dif- ferent groups we belong to within our different communities.
As harvest is almost upon us, and we celebrate the overflowing generosity and provision of God and his good earth, I look forward to seeing new faces making new friends and partners as we share in God’s hospitality and generosity already made visible amongst us in the many invitations to har- vest suppers.
With love in Christ
Suzanne

CHRIS’S CORNER How was that for another interesting summer then? Every year I comment about the conspiracy of nature and the weather, of a myriad permutations that test our every effort to champion the daily battle. As September moved on, the vegetable plot was swept with a blizzard of cabbage white butterflies, I have never seen anything quite like it. The green stuff was netted, sprayed, dusted and still they came. We were repeat sowing and to no avail, caterpillars found their mark and even seedlings were stripped. The charge just seems to be quietening now and I am replanting. There is little choice if I am to have spring cabbage next year.
As has been the case generally, it is all a game of catch up. Winter onions and garlic have only just become available so I have them to plant and over wintering peas and beans will go in soon. As usual there have been some good bits and in particular I have harvested some decent potatoes (although the dry season has made them unstable and liable to fold quickly in hot water).
There is so much mess to sort out though, nothing has had a smooth journey and a few rough days in September really knocked things around in all corners of the garden. I did get slightly ahead of the game with the flower borders and have already been sticking in Pansies and Violas, I have just a couple of tubs to do. I have also been getting the bulbs in. I want to get some roots on them ahead of the winter having sustained heavy losses in the cold and wet of the last one and will also put out a few wallflowers.
The grass seems to want to keep growing, so I am hoping, with a couple of dry days ahead to give the lawn a clip. If you are too, then set the blade up just a little, hard cutting can bring a surge of growth if the weather stays mild or land you with a yellow strip if the frost catches it. The weather will turn quickly now, so have a final check on tender things that you may be looking to keep. By the end of the month soft stuff needs to be offered shelter.
And finally, three weeks from now the clocks go back and we move into dark nights.
Happy gardening

COLIN’S COMPUTER COLUMN
Finding The Words In the early days of computing I tried to develop a program for solving anagrams, as often featured in crossword puzzles. I thought that it should be feasible to take in a string of letters, arrange them in all possible sequences and then test the sequences by a series of rules which said, for example, "the only letter than can follow q in the English language is u " and "we cannot have the same letter three times in succession" and "we cannot start a word with the same consonant twice in
succession" and a great many other complicated rules. I realised that there were going to be many, many steps in the program, especially in the case of longer words, but the thought was that, even in those days, a computer worked so fast that something should be achievable.
It was, but the achievement was rather modest. The program was slow and came up with many words which were rubbish because there wasn't a rule to reject them. Nevertheless, running an eye swiftly over a few pages of valid and invalid words could quite often lead to spotting the solution to the crossword clue. I toyed with the program from time to time for a few years and then gave up when I realised that computers had become so fast and memory storage so huge that a much simpler program could be developed to check letter combinations against a big database of all the words in the English language. I presume that that is the principle behind the many anagram solvers which can be downloaded (often without charge) from the Internet.
Oh well, it was fun trying.
Quite recently, I came across a free program which sorts out all the words which can be made from a string of letters, lets you choose a word, offers you all the words that can be made from the remaining letters and repeats the process for as often as it takes to solve the multiword anagram. If you are curious, enter "iterative anagram solver" into a search engine.
