Confirmation: Congratulations! To each child who received Confirmation this weekend, we say congratulations and
ask for God’s continued blessings. May you be faithful friends of Jesus all your life.
Thank you so much to the parents, sponsors and families who have helped support this step in the children’s faith journey.
Thank you to Bishop Peter for his pastoral presence among us.
Thanks to our leaders Karina Baftirovski and Christine Hibbard for taking responsibility for the program.
A most sincere thank you to all our volunteer catechists who generously gave their time to teach and share their faith with our children.
Thank you to the musicians who played and sang magnificently over the 2 ceremonies and to the servers and readers.
To each and every one… Thank you. We can be proud of how our parish cares, supports and encourages God’s children.
Bishop Peter’s Visitation We have received a letter from the Bishop thanking us for the warm welcome and generous hospitality when he visited our parish last month.
In part, he said, “It was a joy for me to be amongst the faithful and witness a spirit-filled neighbourhood of grace. With the Parish community all working together for the sake of the Gospel, the task of evangelisation and reaching out to others is made more effective and successful.”

Why We Catholics Do The Things We Do?
‘Why do Catholics ‘pray’ to the saints?’ It is a common and beautiful practice for Christians to turn to one another for support and encouragement as they journey through life. The Catholic way of ‘praying’ to the saints is simply an extension of this practice of drawing support from our faith family. Far from undermining adoration of God, devotion to the saints strengthens our love of God. Awareness of the saints raises our sights, empowers us to aspire to Gospel qualities and helps us to see our earthly lives from the perspective of the promise of eternal life.
SRE News Another term has commenced and we are attending to all classes except year 6 in Warnervale, and years 5&6 in Kanwal.
We are also sending out the invitation for people who would be interested in being a helper in the classroom. This would suit someone who relates to children and cherishes their faith.
Warnervale has indicated that on 24th of May Year 5 will be on camp, and on 21st June, Kindergarten will be going on a farm excursion, so to our catechists please note these dates in your diary.
Please contact me if you feel God calling you to serve him in this ministry on 0449 141 637.
Blessings Gayle

Parish Pastoral Council We have had some people step down from the PPC. Thanks you to Tom Brown, Cherie Murray, Ken Whalan and Helen Young for the time and work with the PPC. There are now five vacancies on the PPC. To fill these vacancies we need people who are involved in some ministry or activity in the parish; know the parish and are aware of the issues that are important to parishioners; could commit to a meeting on the third Wednesday evening of the month; and could do some follow-up work on behalf of the Council. We ask that anyone who is interested write a brief (half page) application addressing the above criteria and send it to Fr Vince ([email protected]) for the PPC executive to consider before the next meeting on June 21st. Would you like to serve the parish in this leadership role? Please consider it. Can you think of someone who would be good on the Council? Suggest it to them. Please pray that the Lord gives us the leaders we need.
Ministries Part of our pastoral plan is to have more parishioners involved in ministries in the parish. Our hope would be that everyone who comes to Mass in the Parish is also involved in some ministry or activity. This may be in the church or the community. In the next few weeks we will be having a “drive” for the liturgical ministries that can be done when you come to Mass. This would include readers, servers, Eucharistic ministers, musicians, morning teas, children’s liturgy, sacramental preparation. Please consider if you might be able to take up one of these ministers. More details next week.

A Brief Explanation on the role of St Vincent de Paul Society
How did it start?
There was a young university student called Frederick
Ozanam who was appalled at the poverty he saw around
him in Paris in 1863. He gathered together a few friends and
they began visiting people and bringing them food and
clothing and it grew from there. The Society began in
Australia in 1881 when Charles O’Neill set up a group in
Sydney. Now almost every Catholic parish in Australia
would have a branch of Vinnies.
So it was a ‘men only’ group?
Yes, it was in those days. The women formed a Ladies
Auxiliary to raise money which the men distributed. In the
later part of last century women began joining the groups
and now there is no distinction made. You do not have to
be a Catholic either. We do say a couple of prayers at the
beginning and end of our meetings so you would need to be
comfortable in doing that. It helps to keep us focussed on
the true reason we do what we do as part of our Christian
beliefs.
We have seen the Vinnies shops in nearly every town. Are
they part of it all?
Yes they are part of the Society. Vinnies has two arms. One
arm is for the shops and the other is what we call the Good
Works arm. They are managed separately although they are
both part of the St Vincent de Paul Society.
People donate items they no longer need and these are sold
in the shops to raise money for the Good Works side of
Vinnies.
We need volunteers to work in both arms because if we do
not have people to run the shops then we do not have the
funds to help people who are in need. Then if we do not
have people to help with the good works side of Vinnies
then we cannot get food and clothing and all those other
essentials out to the people who need them.
Are the shops the only way you get money?
No. We receive donations from the Catholic community
who give to collections at Mass. We also have a Winter
Appeal and a Christmas Appeal where people are given the
opportunity to make donations. Donations are also received
from businesses and kids at the Catholic schools who give
some of their pocket money to help those in need. The
Catholic community is really very generous when it comes
to supporting the poor and disadvantaged. All the Christian
groups in Warnervale are similarly very generous.
Do you get any government assistance?
Not a great deal. Donations are tax deductible so the
donors giving $2.00 or more can receive a tax deduction,
but that money from the tax benefit does not go to the
Society. There is a scheme to help people on low incomes to
cope with abnormally high electricity or gas bills and the
Society is one of the organisations that assist the State
Department of Industry to administer this scheme. Various
governments also have money available when there is an
emergency like a bushfire or flood and they often use the
various charities, St Vincent de Paul included, to get this
money out to the people who need it.
Who do you help?
We help all sorts of people. Often they are single parents or
parents on low incomes who are struggling to make ends
meet and to feed and clothe their children. They may be
out of work or suffer some illness which makes work
difficult. There is often some form of illness involved or
family breakdown. There are people who suddenly find
themselves homeless and have nowhere to turn.
Do the people you help have to be Catholics?
No, definitely not. We never ask what religion people are or
indeed if they have a religion. In the old catechism there
used to be a question, “Who is your neighbour?” and the
answer was, “My neighbour is every man, woman and
child”. We are there to help our neighbour.
What sort of help do you provide?
The most common assistance given is food. We, on the
central coast, receive donations of food from food
manufacturing companies based in the region. This food is
basic, staple food of good quality. It is packed into hampers
by volunteers and distributed to our clients. In addition we
have food vouchers for the Lakes Foodbank and Coles.
These vouchers are purchased by the Society. We also give
help to people who need clothing, furniture, bedding and
other household items through the shop. In cases of serious
hardship we also help by giving vouchers for medicines.
As mentioned previously, the NSW Department of Industry
runs a scheme to help low income earners to cope with
abnormally high electricity or gas bills, and telephone bills.
People can approach us to access those schemes.
Do you ever find people abusing the assistance given – for
example, people who do not really need help coming and
saying that they do need help?
Well, we can’t pretend that it does not happen and stories
do get back to us. Thankfully, abuse is fairly rare and we
would prefer that to happen than to miss helping a genuine
case, especially when children are involved.
If someone wants to help, what should they do?
They can call the Wyong Regional Office on 43566700 and
they can be referred to somebody who can discuss it with
them.
