Will You Be My . . . Intentional Disciple?

Dear People and Friends of Saint Joseph’s,

This year the confluence of two, well-known days pro-vides an excellent, enthusiastic jump start to our annual season of deepening conversion. Although the fact that Val-entine’s Day falls on Ash Wednesday may sadden some because of the necessity to move to another day their cus-tomary ways of observing this holiday of love and friend-ship, Ash Wednesday reminds us that to love truly requires that we do so without selfishness. Loving without selfish-ness can only be accomplished by responding to the Lord and his grace which invites us to “Repent and Believe in the Gospel.”

Perhaps for many, Ash Wednesday and Lent evoke depressing, negative sentiments or somber memories; after all, we don ashes on our foreheads with the words, “Remember you are dust and unto dust you shall return.” Even the traditional Lenten practices of prayer, self-denial, and almsgiving tend to have a negative ring to them for many people. Yet, as we understand the true spirit of Lent—the re-formation and renewal of our Hearts—we can em-brace Lent and these Lenten practices with joy. Lent is not about ‘No,’ but about ‘Yes’ to loving fully, and this loving fully brings joy. This re-formation and renewal occurs through intentionally following the Lord Jesus as his Disci-ples.

To this end, our Lenten theme this year will be “Will You Be My. . .Intentional Disciple?” It begins by us re-sponding more and more to the Lord who has been calling us for the last few Sundays to come and follow him. The more we mature as Intentional Disciples, the more we rec-ognize our responsibility in helping others—our children, spouse, relatives, friends, co-workers, neighbors—hear and respond to the Lord’s invitation to them “Will You Be My . . . Intentional Disciple?”

I urge all of you to consider in the next few days the par-ticular ways in which you will embrace Intentional Disciple-ship through the traditional, Lenten practices of prayer, self-denial and almsgiving. Like spring training for baseball play-ers, these traditional practices help us get back to the ba-sics of our Christian discipleship – experiencing more deep-ly God’s great love and mercy for us and answering ‘yes’ with our whole Heart to living more joyfully our relationship in union with the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Prayer – as the means of greater communion with the Lord, prayer opens us to living in the Lord’s life, love and friendship. Consider:

Daily Mass, and bring a family member or friend

Daily family Rosary

Weekly Hour of Adoration in our Adoration Chapel

Daily use of the Lenten meditation booklet

Participation in our parish Bible Study

Using an Act of Conscience each night

Self-Denial – like weight training for the soul, self-denial strengthens our ability to choose God’s will over our own

TIME TALENT and TREASURE A Way of Life at Saint Joseph’s

Renewal at Saint Joseph’s through Intentional Discipleship

Intentional Discipleship requires a deliberate decision to pursue a deeper conversion (relationship) with Christ through worship, pray-er, service, giving, studying, and discerning. As we begin the sea-son of Lent, we are called to conversion. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that the process of conversion and repent-ance was described by Jesus in the parable of the prodigal son, the center of which is the merciful father. The parable reveals the new life — pure, worthy and joyful — of anyone who returns to God and to his family, the Church. Only the heart of Christ who knows the depths of the Father’s love could reveal to us the abyss of his mercy in so simple and beautiful way.

During Lent please consider pursuing God’s love and mercy by participating in one or more of the following:

Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible — The Bible is a story of God’s unfailing love for you. This 8-session Bible course that begins February 28 provides an easy way to understand the Bible. The course reveals the connections between the Old and New Testament, and how the Catholic Faith is rooted in Scripture. Please see the enclosed bulletin insert.

Daily Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation — Experience the gifts of conversion and the healing power of the Sacra-ments of Reconciliation and the Holy Eucharist. Please con-sider attending daily Mass and participating in the Sacrament of Reconciliation as we prepare for Easter.

Become a Perpetual Adorer — No other sacrament (except the Holy Eucharistic) has greater healing power; through it sins are purged away, virtues are increased, and the soul is en-riched with an abundance of every spiritual gift.
