WELCOME TO SIXTH FORM

AT ST PETER AND ST PAUL

CATHOLIC VOLUNTARY ACADEMY

A Message From Mr Doust (Sixth Form Leader)

We would like to welcome you to St Peter and St Paul Catholic Sixth Form. Our Sixth Form is a new, exciting and challenging place to be – a place where students develop academically, pastorally, spiritually and where we provide enrichment for the needs of all our students. The atmosphere is calm and friendly and the emphasis on achieving the high expectations that the school has of its students. The staff work closely with the students to help guide them through all aspects of their time here. Lessons are dynamic, with students actively participating and enjoying the learning ethos created. The school provides a good working environment with students making good use of the independent study lessons, which are vital to the final grades that our students attain. Our Sixth Form is somewhere students can prepare for the next stage of their lives. We strongly believe that attaining the highest results that students can from their carefully selected courses will enable them to be in the best possible position of choice when they come to leave us. The life of the Sixth Form is about preparing all of our students for the outside world and equipping them with the skills, qualifications and attitude needed to be successful. In this sense, motivation from all those associated with the Sixth Form is key. Mr J. Doust (Sixth Form Leader)

“I have come that they may have life and have it to the full”

(John 10:10)

Achievement Our Sixth Form is an inclusive Sixth Form and, as such, offers a broad range of courses which enables students to choose subjects and assessment styles that suit their individual needs. We measure achievement at an individual level and value the successes of all our students. Examination results are one of the key measures of our achievement and indicate the individual successes of our students. The majority of students in 2014 - 2015 achieved at least the grades predicted from their GCSE performance. In addition 60% of our students achieved grades A* to C at A Level. This is a measure of the good progress our students make. For students, the most important measure of success is in achieving their aspirations for Higher Education and careers. Most students who completed their A Level courses are now at university following their first choice courses in: Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nottingham; War, Peace and International Relations at the University of Reading; Forensics at the University of Lincoln and Law at the University of York to name just a few. Some students in 2014 - 2015 chose to take a gap year to further their experience either in the UK or abroad, before going to university in September 2016. We know we are working with individuals and we consider you to be young adults, and that the future you will move into is exciting and very much your own. However, we believe there are things which will stay with you as a former student of St Peter and St Paul; we hope that you will move on from here as a compassionate, independent, well-educated, self-critical, fully rounded, socially aware, and ultimately happy person! Throughout your time here you are making memories which you will reflect upon throughout your life.

Monitoring Progress / Reporting Progress We believe that success is achieved by maintaining a link between student, parent and school. At three points in the year, each student will receive a progress report outlining their target grades, current performance and commitment for each subject. In addition a full subject report will be given during the year. A Sixth Form Parents’ evening will be arranged part way through the year to discuss progress and commitment.

“I stayed at the Sixth Form because it offers a wide range of subjects so, if like me, you don't have definite career aspirations, you can study the subjects you enjoy whilst keeping your options open. Also the staff know you personally, all your strengths and weaknesses, and can offer advice in your studies based on that” (Sixth Form Student)

Independent Learning All students have time within the school day to undertake their own research and further their own learning. Recognising the importance, but also the difficulties, of becoming an effective independent learner, we don’t just leave students to it. Each student will have study periods on their timetable, the majority of these are supervised. It is expected that this time is used wisely to carry out further research and independent study. The newly refurbished Sixth Form Study Area has a designated room for quiet working. Typically, we would expect students to carry out 4 or 5 hours independent study per subject per week. Therefore students should use their time wisely. It is essential to start a regular routine of independent work, as often too little can lead to serious underachievement and this can often be very difficult to repair.

Importance of Attendance We expect all students in Year 12 to attend school from 8.40 am - 3.15 pm. If they leave school for any reason, at any time of the day they must sign in and out. Medical appointments and driving lessons should be arranged for outside school hours.

Sixth Form Personal Development

At St Peter and St Paul’s Sixth Form we aim to develop the whole student and give them the tools with which they can deal with life’s challenges whilst maintaining respect for themselves and for others around them. During the year there are a number of Aspire Days organised for Sixth Form which will help the students build confidence and broaden their experiences. The course is designed to help prepare them for life after St Peter and St Paul Academy, be it university, employment or other. Through Careers Guidance students are actively encouraged, from the start, to research and develop their knowledge of Higher Education courses available as well as the opportunities for GAP year, work experience and apprenticeships. There is considerable help and advice given on applying to university, via UCAS, with excellent support for those students wishing to aspire to Oxford or Cambridge Universities. The school works very closely with local universities. In addition Students are prepared for the financial responsibilities they will encounter in the world of work, as well as applying for student loans. Good citizenship is integral to our Catholic ethos. Students are encouraged to take an active role in the life of the school and the wider community. Sixth Form students are leaders within their tutor groups and within the School Council, liaising with the staff to improve the learning experience for all. They are given the opportunity to practise their public speaking skills within Faculty and whole school assemblies. In addition Sixth Form students are encouraged to support younger students through Peer Mentoring and to develop their reading through recognised reading schemes.

“Our teachers are not just resourceful and knowledgeable, but we can form a relationship with them, which comes in useful when Sixth Form life inevitably gives you pressure and stress.”

Curriculum

St Peter and St Paul offers a broad range of Academic and Vocational courses e.g. AS / A2 Level, BTEC, OCR Nationals and Level 2 courses and Construction. Some of our courses are offered in partnership with Branston Community Academy. When you enter Sixth Form, you will be able to follow a programme of study to suit your individual needs. There is no set pattern of course that the students are expected to follow and students could spend one, two or three years in our Sixth Form. Some possible examples of pathways:

Student A: Entry to follow A Level courses is 5 GCSE Grade C or above including English and Maths. Students with mainly GCSE A*, A or B grades or equivalent usually follow 4 AS subjects and then continue 3 A2 subjects in Year 13. Student B: Students who have a mix of GCSE B and C grades or equivalent are recommended to follow 3 AS subjects and / or a Level 3 BTEC course and continue these at A2 Level. Student C & D: Students with a mix of GCSE C,D or E grades are recommended to follow a Level 2 course for 1 year. After this, they can then advance to Level 3 qualifications. Any student who has not achieved a Grade C in English and Maths will be expected to follow a course in order to re-sit these examinations. All students in our Sixth Form will continue to study a course of RE that could lead to earning additional UCAS points.

Level 2 Qualifications

Level 2 students will be provided with a timetable for the week based upon the areas of interest that they have indicated on their application form. Like any other course the number of students who express an interest in studying any of the particular Level 2 courses will determine whether or not the course will be delivered. A typical Level 2 timetable may look as follows:

For those students who study the Level 2 pathway there is the opportunity to undertake a work placement in the local area. Your Sixth Form leader will discuss this with you.

Latest changes to AS / A2 Qualifications

If you choose to do AS in any of the subjects listed below, please be aware that these have now been ‘decoupled’ from the A2 qualification. This means that the AS examination(s) you take at the end of Year 12 will result in a qualification in it’s own right. If you continue studying a subject into Year 13 you must be aware that the AS qualification you gained in Year 12 will NOT contribute to your final grade and you will have to sit this examination again in Year 13 as well as sitting your A2 examinations. This is something your teacher will discuss with you at the start of your course.

All other subjects will remain as they are at this time.
