We are delighted to introduce Woolwich Polytechnic’s Sixth Form prospectus. Our school has been the number one most improved boys’ school for the past two years and our sixth form builds on this extraordinary achievement. The one key difference is that our sixth form is co-educational meaning that girls as well as boys can benefit from an education of the absolute highest standards. We are a sixth form which prides itself on its high expectations combined with excellent levels of personal care - a combination that leads to outstanding results for the young gentlemen and young ladies who pass through our doors each year.

For the past three years we have seen an ever-increasing number of students gaining places in the top universities - something of which we are very proud. Our curriculum offers a wide range of courses that both challenge and excite. Being a specialist technology school we naturally have a strong base of A Levels in the Sciences, Mathematics and Design Technology but we also cater for students who excel in the Arts, Humanities, Business Studies and Languages. All of our sixth form students pride themselves in the professional dresscode which helps them prepare for life at the highest levels. We hope you find our prospectus useful and we would encourage you to visit us and see for yourself what makes us so special. Being offered a place in Woolwich Polytechnic Sixth Form is the first step to the rest of your life and a chance to become one of ‘Tomorrow’s Leaders’.

Our 21st century curriculum reflects the competitive nature of today’s job market. We have painstakingly prepared a curriculum that is personalised to you and reflects, and in many cases, anticipates the changing employment trends. We offer a curriculum that was graded as outstanding in our most recent Ofsted inspection. Your curriculum will give you a range of Level 3 courses in partnership with excellent Personal Development. Personal Development is nurtured through tutor time, extracurricular activities and citizenship work. This involves supporting students, staff and the wider community in voluntary activities and school duties. We offer work experience in Year 12, which allows you to put the theory into practice.

For the full, detailed curriculum offer visit our website: www.woolwichpoly.greenwich.sch.uk

One of the many benefits of studying at the Poly is the huge network of community contacts and extracurricular activities. We want you to be a leader in the community. This involves you being as well rounded and ‘world aware’ as you can be. Our extracurricular activities cover a myriad of activities including: sports, educational visits every half term, school council, student ambassadors, university visits and guest speakers from the academic and business worlds.

“The advice and guidance I have been

given from the Poly has been superb!”

We have been recognised through Ofsted and other outside agencies as having an outstanding pastoral system. This is predicated on the premise that every student matters and that every conversation is important. Our Sixth Form tutors take their tutees through the two years of Post 16 education. Our tutors deliver a one to one mentoring programme to support academic studies, as well as providing support and guidance for our students in preparing them for a successful future.

Our aspiration for you is to attend an outstanding university. Historically we have students that have attended a Russell Group university. This pathway leads a number of our alumni into successful business careers. We have a teaching staff of over 100 university graduates with a number having attended Oxford and Cambridge. The support and guidance that you seek is in every corridor and every classroom.

There is an old but true adage that says ‘you dress not for the job you have today but for the job you want tomorrow’. Our dress code is smart business attire for all students. This reflects our aspirations for you and the success that you have already achieved and for the standing that you have in our learning community. Your status as ambassadors and role models for all students at the Poly is crucial for the continuing success that the Poly has had but is also indicative of the success that you will have in the future.

“The culture of high aspiration is palpable.”

Vandana (Head Girl)

Page 18: Sixth Form Prospectus

Student Voice:

Having officially finished my time at Woolwich Poly, the last thing left on my agenda as head girl is to gather all the memories of my time at the sixth form which I can treasure for years to come. The start of my journey at the school is an experience I will never forget. I can now only describe the Poly sixth form to be an environment where the students are your friends and the teachers become your family. It’s the fact that every adult you meet at the Poly wants you to succeed and wants you to achieve, the culture of high aspiration is palpable! The Poly experience isn’t all about studying. We were often rewarded for our outstanding achievements including an unforgettable visit to a West End theatre. We were constantly given opportunities to boost our skills, working around the school and most importantly, we were supplied with all the necessary support for starting our careers with guidance towards entering university and work skills opportunities. The sixth form is one that allows you to take a step towards independence with a comforting sense of security on the side.

My time at Woolwich Poly has undoubtedly been unforgettable and I unreservedly recommend the sixth form to all students. There is no other place where success is better achieved. I leave you with this quote from Friedrich Nietzsche

“He who would learn to fly one day must first learn to stand and walk and run and climb and dance; one cannot fly into flying”. The Poly gave me wings to fly.
