Entry Requirements

Like most schools and colleges we require students to have achieved certain grades at GCSE before they can study a subject at post-16. We also check you are suitable with your GCSE teachers. This is to ensure that you are ready for A-levels and Applied General Courses and that you have the tools you need to enjoy them and do well.

To help you choose your courses we take the total score from your best 7 GCSEs. A grade 9 gets you 9 points, a grade 8 gets you 8 points and so on. For BTEC subjects, you should use the following table to find the ‘points equivalents’ for letter grades.

The next table tells you what subject combinations you can take at Trinity Sixth Form based on your GCSE attainment.

Most subjects also have additional subject specific requirements (see course descriptions on the following pages).

It is important to remember, however, that we consider each application on a case by case basis. If you have just missed the number of points you need to take certain subjects, we often consult your GCSE teachers, even if you came to us from another school, to determine whether you would do well in the course you want to take and therefore should take it regardless of narrowly missing out on the points.

What Courses Do We Offer?

5

The process of choosing Post-16 courses is an important one as this is the start of your journey to your chosen future career. Our aim is to make sure that the study programme you choose at Trinity Sixth Form is challenging and allows you to progress to your first choice destination.

STEP 1

Decide what career path you are going to take: University, Apprenticeship or employment. Ask teachers, friends and family for advice.

STEP 2

Find out what specific qualifications are required for your career path.

STEP 3

UniversityUse the UCAS website

to find courses in your chosen career to establish what grade profile is required for entry and also if any specific subjects are

requested.

ApprenticeshipContact the Trinity

careers team to find out what courses would be suitable for your chosen apprenticeship.

EmploymentContact local

employers and the Trinity careers team in

school for support.

STEP 4

Choose 3 or 4 courses in preference order, ensuring these are at the right level for you based upon your predicted GCSE profile.

The Sixth Form team will confirm these choices with you.

Former Head Girl Abbie Tomlinson on visiting Zambia: “It was a life changing experience that I will never forget. I met people from all backgrounds including young children that don’t have the privilege of education. It also prepared me for my chosen career in Medicine and gave me things to talk about at university interviews. It was amazing.”

A week in the life ...

LessonsMost students have somewhere between 15 and 20 hours of lessons each week depending on the number of subjects you study. These lessons are taught in small classes by our caring teachers who have high expectations of what our students can achieve. Your teachers will get to know you quickly and our caring approach, set alongside very high academic standards, is evident in everything we do. Teachers use knowledge organisers and regular assessments to check your progress and you will be set 5 hours of homework per subject per week.

Study PeriodsHaving study periods is always a new experience. You can choose how you spend your study periods if you are working hard and meeting deadlines. In the Sixth Form we check this regularly with your teachers using fortnightly feedback and if you are not on target we will direct your study for you. The upstairs study room is a staffed and silent work environment where many students choose to work. During study periods students can also use the social spaces and vending machines downstairs.

“I use my study periods to work in the upstairs study room. The teacher in there makes the environment quiet which helps me focus on my work.”

These activities are designed to give you a change from your normal study, develop your character and prepare you for life after Trinity Sixth Form. You may choose from a range of options such as regular work experience, the extended project, a leadership role in school, mentoring younger students and many more. On a Wednesday afternoon we also offer Sixth Form games which is always popular.

“I play football every week as part of Sixth Form games. I also have the option to use the gym. This gives me a break from my studies and improves my academic performance.”

James - Year 13 student

Tutor TimeEvery Sixth Form student is assigned a tutor group and your tutor is your first point of contact in most situations. Your tutor will run tutor sessions and support you with university and job applications.

Personal DevelopmentEvery Friday morning Sixth Form students get together for Personal Development sessions. These sessions are delivered by a range of providers including the Sixth Form team, external speakers and Universities and are all designed to help and support Sixth Form students.

“During Thursday morning enrichment time I volunteer at a local primary school. This has helped me gain valuable experience for my UCAS application.

Content Mathematics underpins everything we do in modern society. It develops problem solving, reasoning and analytical skills, which lead into applications in the scientific, mechanical and financial worlds. The course prepares you for further study not only in Mathematics and Accountancy, but leads into Sciences, Medicine, Business and Economics. Now the most popular A level course in the UK it helps any application for further study in these areas - for some it is essential. We build on the GCSE course and study many new areas including proof, calculus, mechanics and statistics.

The course curriculum has been designed to help specifically with the mathematical elements of Geography, Business, Economics, Psychology, Sociology, Health and Social Care and the Sciences. Students consolidate and build on mathematical understanding to foster the ability to think mathematically and apply techniques in unfamiliar situations with confidence. We prepare students for the range of real-life mathematical demands of further study and employment.
