Year 13 students have offers from the following institutions

At the Spring Concert this week, the Music Department had the pleasure of presenting Big Band Royalty t-shirts to our founding cohort of Year 13 musicians. Rohan, Aqsa, Yusra and Rajan have been an integral part of the Music dept leading by example and promoting musical excellence in every performance. They were fundamental in shaping Music at INA and have built a legacy excellence for future graduates to aspire to. They will always be welcomed back to our music community and we wish them well for their bright futures ahead.

GCSE Examinations Contingency DayThe Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) have announced a contingency date of the 26th of June 2019.

A contingency date is a day specifically set aside “in the event of widespread, sustained national or local disruption to examinations during the June 2019 examination series”. This decision comes following the tragic events of last summer, in particular the Manchester attack and the Grenfell Tower fire. It may be necessary to postpone an exam in the event of such an incident to allow all students a fair and equal chance.

This means that all candidates taking GCSE or A Level exams must be available to sit exams from the date of their first exam until the 26th June 2019. We understand that once your exams are over you will probably want to celebrate, but in light of this new rule please do not organise a holiday or plan to be any distance from school until after the 26th June. This decision is not one that has been taken by INA, it has been imposed on all schools by JCQ and does apply to all candidates in all schools in the UK.

Mr Crowther-Green, Assistant Principal

Quadrature Workplace Visit On Tuesday 26th March, a number of Year 12 students were invited to participate in a workplace visit to Quadrature, arranged through Teach First.

To quote from the information we were given on the company:

‘Quadrature Capital use cutting edge technologies, and complex algorithms, to trade in a way that’s impossible for humans. They’re a close-knit team of computer scientists, engineers, mathematicians, programmers, and other talented individuals, who collaborate to solve hard problems. Quadrature have a fantastic open-plan office where they provide breakfast, snacks, a music room and library, games, a ping-pong table and yoga sessions overlooking the London skyline!’

At Quadrature, we were able to learn about what a career in technology involved, and how many people can have a career in this industry even though they may not have a qualification that relates to technology. During our visit, we enjoyed learning about how programming can help companies, such as Spotify, through analysing data to speed up and complete certain tasks. Along with this, we were given a tour of the workplace and we met a few of the members of their team, which was great as it let us understand more about what it’s like to work in a career in technology.

In addition, Quadrature also offers work experience and a paid summer internship where students work on interesting challenges that add real value to their business. This will be a good opportunity as we’ll be able to get exposure to, and contacts with, a highly-respected company in order to help develop a career in the Tech Industry.

Overall, we had a great time attending this event as we learnt a lot and now have a better understanding of getting into a career in technology. We also want to thank Quadrature for letting us visit their workplace, (and Teach First for organizing this) and for providing free food and drinks. Furthermore, we had a great view of The Shard and the River Thames, after having taken one of Europe’s fastest elevators.

Coding against contagion: fighting epidemics with computers25 Apr 2019, 19:00–20:30 Steven Riley, Professor of Infectious Disease Dynamics, School of Public Health

After the 2014 Ebola outbreak and one year after the centenary of the influenza pandemic of 1918, understanding how infectious diseases spread and developing strategies to contain them is crucial.

Steven studies the transmission of human pathogens. He conducts field studies, analyses data and uses mathematical models to look at scientific questions that are relevant to public health: how does our pattern of social contacts affect the transmission of respiratory infections? How much more severe is one strain of influenza than another? How far does influenza penetrate into rural areas after it sweeps through cities?

Organised by Friends of Imperial, if you want to attend, let Ms Joy know in advance.

Please ensure you only book a place if you intend to go.

Touch is central to the performance of medicine. Traditionally, doctors depended on touch to diagnose illness. Revolutions in imaging technology, machine learning and artificial intelligence seem to reduce the need for physical examination. Yet touch is not only about gathering information but is how we express compassion and care.

This lecture considers how ‘gnostic’ touch (identifying disease) and ‘pathic’ touch (conveying care) are becoming separated by technological developments, and asks what we can do to ensure that touch remains central in connecting doctors and patients.

His clinical career has ranged from trauma surgery in Southern Africa to general practice in Wiltshire and he has a longstanding fascination with education and simulation.

Barrister Sarah Langford gives an account of 11 cases that shine a light on the current state of the legal system in the UK and the lives affected in the criminal and family courts.

Sarah Langford is a barrister. Her job is to stand in court representing the mad and the bad, the vulnerable, the heartbroken and the hopeful. She must become their voice:

weave their story around the black and white of the law and tell it to the courtroom. These stories may not make headlines but they will change the lives of ordinary people in extraordinary ways. They are stories which, but for a twist of luck, might have been yours.

Sarah Langford has been a practising barrister since 2006, both in London and around the country, principally in criminal and family law. She studied English at the University of the West of England. She worked as a barmaid, legal secretary and note-taking clerk before completing a law conversion, in which she gained a distinction. She was awarded a scholarship from Gray’s Inn of Court and went on to train as a barrister. She lives with her husband and two small boys in London and Suffolk.

Repair after inflammatory lung disease: a role for stem cells, matrix and neuropeptides14 May 2019, 17:00–18:00 Professor Tracy Hussell, Manchester Collaborative Centre for Inflammation Research, University of Manchester

Returning the lung to health following acute inflammation, doesn’t happen passively upon antigen removal. The molecular mechanisms that facilitate a return to homeostasis are poorly understood. Also, in chronic inflammatory disease, there is a tendency to view the process as abnormal or elevated, when they are actually normal events that do not receive the signal to stop. For example, a fibrotic response is required for lung repair, but without a stop signal will lead to fibrosis.

In this lecture, I will provide evidence that the repair process leads to pathology, because specific cells in the lung are not receiving the correct sequence of stop signals. Aberrant pathways include the production of extracellular matrix, a deficit in basement membrane, incorrect signals for basal cells and involvement of neuropeptides from epithelium.

The Brexit Shock: A Constitutional Perspective24 April 2019, 18:00–20:00The prospect of Brexit has produced an episode of prolonged political turmoil more intense and sustained than any other in the peacetime history of the UK. The precise end is not yet in sight. One aspect of this disruption as been uncertainty in the political system itself: the constitution of the United Kingdom. In the wake of a referendum, an exercise in direct democracy, traditional understandings and conventions involving vital institutions of representative democracy such as Cabinet, Parliament, the devolved systems and the political parties have broken down. How, when and whether they will be restored remains uncertain.

At this event, the Director of the Centre for British Politics and Government, Dr. Andrew Blick, speaks on the subject of his recently published book ‘Stretching the Constitution: the Brexit shock in historic perspective’ (Hart, 2019). He updates it to take into account recent and ongoing developments. Dr. Blick will ask, from a constitutional standpoint, how the Brexit episode came about; was it tells us about our constitution, and what Brexit might mean for the future of the way the UK governs itself.

2019 UCL Lancet Lecture: NCDs as a global emergency - closer to pandemic or climate change?29 April 2019, 5:00 pm to 7:00 pmMore than 70% of global health deaths are caused by NCDs which have been estimated to impose a $47 trillion burden on developing country GDP by 2030. Like pandemics, NCDs are usually preventable. Like climate change, NCDs require a multi-sectoral response. Like both, NCDs are largely a human-caused problem. This lecture claims that NCDs are a solvable problem and describes plausible scenarios for reversing NCD burden and achieving health and economic gains. It should be feasible for every country in the world to conquer NCDs in an ethical, sustainable and affordable manner.Dr Rachel Nugent is Vice President for Global Non-communicable Diseases at RTI International and affiliate Associate Professor in the Department of Global Health at the University of Washington. She leads a global initiative to prevent and reduce the health and economic burdens of chronic non-communicable diseases in low- and middle-income countries.

Open to all but booking (via Eventbrite) is essential.

LSE’s Rebecca Newton will in this lecture discuss how to build authentic leadership and drive positive change.

Rebecca Newton is an organisational psychologist, executive coach, LSE lecturer and author. Her latest book is Authentic Gravitas.

Pollution is a much more complex problem than many realise and cannot be resolved solely through global and regional agreements.

Pollution is closely connected with behavioural and technology choices, production and consumption practices, industrial processes and pricing policies, financial and business sector orientation and a culture of consumerism and irresponsibility to the environment and impacts on people’s health. Only by changing behaviours can we tackle pollution. On leave from her role at UCL, Professor McGlade was Director of the Science Division and Chief Scientist and Statistician at United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Kenya. There she led many key global assessment activities including the Global Environment Outlook, UN Emissions Gap Report and Frontiers. She also led the creation of Environment Live, an intelligence system for environmental monitoring. Before moving to Kenya, she served as Executive Director of the European Environment Agency, where she introduced citizen science, systems for sharing environmental information for national reporting and delivered key assessments and analyses for all major European environmental policies.

No reservations are required for this lecture. It will be run on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

Doors will open 30 minutes before the start of the lecture.

The Annual Economica Phillips lecture, delivered this year by Carmen M. Reinhart, is jointly sponsored by the journal Economica and the the Department of Economics.

Carmen M. Reinhart is the Minos A. Zombanakis Professor of the International Financial System at Harvard Kennedy School. She was Senior Policy Advisor and Deputy Director at the International Monetary Fund and held positions as Chief Economist and Vice President at the investment bank Bear Stearns in the 1980s. She serves in the Advisory Panel of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and was a member of the Congressional Budget Office Panel of Economic Advisors. She has written on a variety of topics in macroeconomics and international finance. Her work has helped to inform the understanding of financial crises in both advanced economies and emerging markets. Her best-selling book (with Kenneth S. Rogoff) entitled This Time is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly documents the striking similarities of the recurring booms and busts that have characterized financial history. It has been translated to over 20 languages and won the Paul A. Samuelson Award.

This event is free and open to all with no ticket or pre-registration required. Entry is on a first come, first served basis.

The air microbiome: a missing eco-system?11 April 2019, 17:15–18:00 Microbial communities inhabiting terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems have long been studied. With the onset of metagenomics, the degree of diversity and abundance of these communities has become apparent, even on a global scale. In contrast, the atmosphere, with its sizable planetary volume, has largely been neglected as a habitat for microbial communities, despite providing means of transport with an intercontinental range. We have studied the occurrence of airborne microbial organisms in the tropical climate of Singapore and found robust and persistent assemblages, both on intra-day and a month-to-month time scales. Bacteria and fungi were the major constituents of the air microbiome, in addition to DNA derived from plants and insects. Besides conducting in-depth metagenomics studies that identified the diversity and abundance of airborne organisms, we have sequenced and assembled “100 genomes from air” using single-molecule sequencing (SMRT). These genome data from various indoor and outdoor settings, together with organismal and habitat information, are now enabling investigations of the impact of air environments on respiratory cohorts.

We are delighted to welcome Professor Stephan Schuster, Professor of Environmental Genomics, School of Biological Sciences, at Nanyang Technological University, and Singapore & Research Director of Singapore Centre on Environmental Life Sciences Engineering, Singapore.

Tea and coffee will be served from 16:30 with the lecture starting at 17:15.

The Bioengineering Lecture 2019Distinguished physicist Professor Professor Albert Van Den Berg presents the 2019 Department of bioengineering annual lecture29 May 2019, 17:30 - 18:30

From Lab on Chip to Organ on ChipThe recent rapid developments in bionanotech and micro/nanofluidic technologies has enabled the realization of miniaturized laboratories. These Labs-on-a-Chip will play an important role in future medicine, both in point-of-care devices for drug or biomarker monitoring, as well as in early diagnostic devices.

We developed a pre-filled ready-to-use capillary electrophoresis platform for measuring ions in blood. It is used to monitor lithium in finger-prick blood of manic-depressive patients, but can also be used for measuring calcium in blood for prevention of milk fever, or for measuring creatinine in blood or sodium in urine for early detection of ESRD. Microfluidics can also be exploited to manipulate and experiment with cells on chip.

We have developed a microsystem for sperm analysis and selection for artificial insemination, where we can electrically detect and sort healthy sperm cells. Using microdevices we have been able to electroporate and transfect genes into individual cells, and a microdroplet platform was used for encapsulation of single cells in microdroplets, ordering of these microdroplets and 1:1 fusion of these droplets to form hybridomas.

The Cockney Romantics: John Keats and his FriendsTuesday, 14 May 2019, 6:00pm–7:00pm

The word Romanticism makes us think of mountain tops and stormy seas, but the younger generation of English Romantics (above all, John Keats) were Londoners through and through. They were even mocked as ‘the Cockney School of Poetry’.

Jonathan Bate will track Keats to Hampstead and tell of the extraordinary circle of writers – opium-eater Thomas De Quincey, essayist Charles Lamb, master-critic William Hazlitt – who wrote for The London Magazine, until its gifted editor was killed in a duel with a rival critic.

Professor Bate is Gresham Professor of Rhetoric. He is a British academic, biographer, critic, broadcaster, novelist and scholar. He specialises in Shakespeare, Romanticism and Ecocriticism. He is Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford, Provost of Worcester College, Oxford, and Honorary Fellow of Creativity at Warwick Business School.
