Pastor’s Notes

Life after death was not part of Jewish thinking at the

time of Solomon. In their thought long life, wealth and

children to carry on the family name was the reward of

right living. What if we were offered three wishes that

would be granted to us like we see in the fairy tales? It

is almost like wishing to win a state lottery. So what

would we wish for? Our wishes will reflect our deeper

desires. What would God think of our choices?

God appears to Solomon in a dream. This was God’s

primary way of communicating before the prophets

became prominent. You would think that Solomon

would ask for the things we would ask for, e.g., financial

security, secure boarders, a good health plan, a

respectful press, etc.. He is a new king and he is very

young. He probably is very worried about his inner

court. Will they take advantage of him? However, he

does not ask for the obvious, e.g., kill my enemies, give

me power and riches. Rather, he asks for wisdom and

discernment. Solomon has the humility to recognize his

littleness, youth and lack of experience. He asks for an

understanding heart to enable him to hear intelligently,

to judge people, to see their inner motives and their

actions so he could deal with them wisely. He asks for

the ability to distinguish right from wrong and to be

obedient to God’s laws and will.

There is another astute observation about Solomon’s

request. It seems to encompass not only wisdom, but

wisdom and virtue. Plato taught that knowledge was the

most important thing to have, but Aristotle taught that

complete knowledge is impossible. Aristotle taught his

son that wisdom is both knowledge and virtue. This

thinking has been adopted by the Church and something

we incorporate in our school.

The reading from the Romans points out that all of us

are called according to God’s purpose. Since the 1973

decision to permit abortions, about 50,000,000 children

have died, each with a purpose unfulfilled on this

earth. Imagine, if they had lived, all the talents we would

be sharing with them. Imagine what our tax base and

Social Security System would be like. There would not

even be a temptation to euthanize our sick and elderly

to save money because we would value them. Even

better we probably would have found many ways to treat

illnesses with all that hidden talent.

When Solomon finishes the construction of the Temple,

he says a beautiful prayer that all world leaders should

meditate on (1 Kings 8). It also gives a good description

of what a church should be and what potential we could

have if more people would visit it.

Fr. Euk

The surpassing treasure of God's kingdom

What do you treasure the most and how do you keep it

from being lost or stolen? In a peasant community the

best safe was often the earth. The man in the parable

(Matthew 13:44) "went in his joy" to sell everything. Why?

Because he found a treasure worth possessing above all

else he had. He did not, however, have enough to buy the

treasure. Fortunately, he only needed enough to buy the

field. In a similar fashion, God offers his kingdom of right-

eousness, peace, and joy (Romans 14:17) as incompara-

ble treasure at a price we can afford! We can't pay the

full price for the life which God gives us; but when we ex-

change our life for the life which God offers, we receive a

treasure beyond compare.

Obtaining the greatest possible treasure The pearl of great price also tells us a similar lesson.

Pearls in the ancient world came to represent the su-

premely valuable. Jesus remarked that one should not

cast pearls before swine (Matthew 7:6). Why would a

merchant sell everything for a peerless pearl? No doubt

because he was attracted to what he thought was the

greatest treasure he could possess. Discovering God's

kingdom is like stumbling across hidden treasure or find-

ing the one pearl of great price.

When we discover the kingdom of God, we receive the

greatest possible treasure - the Lord himself. Selling all

that we have to obtain this incomparable treasure could

mean many things - our friends, job, our "style of life",

what we do with our free time. Treasure has a special

connection to the heart, the place of desire and longing,

the place of will and focus. The thing we most set our

heart on is our highest treasure. In this parable what

does the treasure of the kingdom refer to? It certainly

refers to the kingdom of God in all its aspects. But in a

special way, the Lord himself is the treasure we seek. If

the Almighty is your gold and your precious silver, then

you will delight yourself in the Almighty (Job 22:22- 23).

Is the Lord the treasure and delight of your heart?

Marriage Con-Validation

Are you a Catholic who was married by the justice of the

peace or a minister of another denomination? As a mar-

ried couple, you have already made a commitment to one

another. Perhaps you’d like to consider taking your mar-

riage to the next level by inviting Jesus to dwell within

your relationship. If you feel ready to begin the process of

preparing for the Sacrament of Marriage in the Church,

or if you’d simply like to discuss your options, please call

Cheryl at the rectory, 732-363-4200, to set up an ap-

pointment with our Pastor.
