Pastor’s Notes

As Ordinary Time comes to an end and as we observe a

time of prayer for the souls in Purgatory during the

month of November, we recall the Four Last Things:

Death, Judgement, Heaven or Hell. Upon death, the

Particular Judgement is made which results in an

immediate judgement of Heaven, Purgatory or Hell. At

the Second Coming at the End of Time, the Final

Judgement is made. It is public and just, with only two

destinations, Heaven or Hell. Purgatory will come to an

end.

Jesus spoke of two final possibilities for human

existence; being in everlasting happiness in the

presence of God or being in everlasting torment in the

absence of God. Jesus describes the state of the

damned in various metaphors – everlasting fire, utter

darkness, tormenting thirst, and weeping and gnashing

of teeth.

The apostles ask Jesus, “Lord, with those who are saved

be few?” Jesus replied, “Strive to enter by the narrow

door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and not be

able” (Lk 13:23-24). In Matthew we hear Jesus say,

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the

way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who

entered are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is

hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few” (Mt

7:13-14). Jesus seems to imply that there is a hell and

that many go there; more than are the saved.

The New Testament does not tell us that any particular

person is in hell. Jesus did call Judas Iscariot the son of

perdition (Jn 17:12). He also said of Judas, “It would be

better for that man if he had never been born” (Mt

26:24 and Mk 14:21). Jesus also calls Judas Iscariot a

devil (Jn 6:70).

In the Gospels the devils proclaim that Jesus is the holy

one of God, but they are not saved by recognizing this

fact. While God’s plan is to reconcile all things in Christ,

He does not override the freedom that enables us to

resist His holy will. We are able to resist God’s grace so

none of us is really safe.

We teach that everyone who dies in a state of mortal sin

goes immediately to the eternal punishments of

Hell. The consensus among the Fathers of the Church is

that the majority of mankind goes to eternal punishment

in Hell. St. Thomas Aquinas said that it is to be expected

that most human beings fall short of achieving Heaven.

In the middle of the 20th century, many Catholic

theologians, breaking with tradition, favored the view

that all mankind may be saved or does eventually attain

salvation. Some even proposed a universal

salvation. Many Christians today take for granted that

everyone must be saved.

Pope John Paul II said what happened to the devils is a

warning to us. He went on to say that the thought of Hell

must not create anxiety or despair, but it is a necessary

and healthy reminder of our personal responsibility. For

Christians, the hope for salvation cannot be used to

assume a theory of universal salvation. However, we can

hope for the salvation of all. In hope the Church prays for

all men to be saved. We know that, in all things, God

works for the good of those who love Him. We also know

that if we persevere in that love, nothing will ever

separate us from Christ (Romans 8:28-39).

Fr. Euk

The foolish will miss heaven's wedding feast.

Are you missing out on what's most important in life?

Being unprepared can lead to unnecessary trouble and

even disaster! What good is a life-jacket left on the shore

when the boat is sinking? Jesus' story of ten single ladies

waiting for a wedding procession in the middle of the

night seems strange to most westerners today. But

Jesus' audience knew all too well how easily this could

happen to them.

Don't miss the most important engagement of all.

Wedding customs in ancient Palestine required extra

vigilance and preparation for everyone involved. (Some

near eastern villages still follow this custom.) The bride

and groom did not go away for their honeymoon, but

celebrated for a whole week with their family and friends.

It was the custom for the groom, in company with his

friends, to come at his discretion and get his bride and

bring her to their new home. They would take the longest

route possible so that many villagers along the way could

join in the wedding procession. Once they arrived and

closed the doors, no one else could be admitted. If the

groom decided to come and bring his bride at night, then

lights were required by necessity to guide the travelers

through the dark and narrow streets. No one was allowed

on the village streets at night without a lamp!

Consider Joining our Altar Server Ministry

St. Veronica Altar Server Ministry provides an opportunity

for the young people of our parish to become more in-

volved in the parish in a constructive, helpful and educa-

tional way. The altar server ministry is a very important

and beautiful commitment to our parish community and

is an invitation by God. The altar server ministry provides

boys and girls with the opportunity to learn more about

their faith and to begin to build a foundation of evangeli-

zation and stewardship by serving at Mass and other li-

turgical functions. An altar server is the right hand help-

er of the Priest and Deacon at the Mass.

The ministry is open to those in Fourth Grade and be-

yond, who have celebrated their First Communion. If you

are interested in joining our altar server ministry, please

download the registration form

at WWW.Stveronica.com and return it to the rectory to

the attention of Deacon Gino Esposito.

Olive Wood Gifts From the Holy Land Next weekend, Nov. 18th and 19th we will have visitors selling

Olive Wood and other religious items. The

olive wood items are crafted by the Christians

in the Holy Land and it is their only means of

supporting themselves. You’ll be able to buy

after each Mass in the cafeteria. Please

come and support the small community of

Christians still living in Holy Land. Thank you.

Giving Tree

Once again our parish will be

preparing a Giving Tree to help

make Christmas a little brighter

for those who find themselves in

need during this holiday season.

Beginning Saturday, November

25th, our Giving Tree will be in

the narthex of the Church.

The giving tree is decorated with paper ornaments. Each

tag contains information about the gift recipient as well as

a gift request. The cost of the gifts varies from a few dol-

lars to perhaps the cost of a coat. When you select an

ornament from the tree, please consider purchasing the

requested gift. If you are unable to locate the gift that was

requested, please substitute a comparable item in its

place.

Tape the paper ornament to the outside of the package. It

is important that the ornament be attached to the gift as

this is the only method we have for distributing the gifts to

the proper individual.

All gifts MUST be returned to the church narthex no later

than 1:00PM on Sunday, December 10th. Please return

the gifts on time. The various organizations will be picking

up the gifts on Monday, December 11th so that they have

time to organize and distribute them before Christmas.

Thank you for your generosity.
