TESTIMONIALS

“I met some amazing people who are passionate about digital transformation. I arrived with no great expec-tations but I returned with renewed energy and hope for the future of healthcare. I made some really great connections in terms of future work collaborations, but more importantly to me, they are people whose vision for a better future for patients I share.”Marie Ennis-O’Connor, Digital Engagement Strategist, Writer and International Keynote Speaker. Named #HIT100 Infl uencer, USA

“There were real professionals to learn from: patients transformed into heroes, doctors with system-wide perspectives, CEOs and other leaders sharing insights and innovation, garnishing case studies with rich media and relevant data”Markus Karras, Marketing & Communications Lead Health Europe – AAPAC, Accenture, Germany

“Think big, act small and start today. Be the change to make yourself and all the people around you CEO of their own health. The lone nuts are already being followed and the technology is there. Let’s make it happen.”Ron Roozendaal, Director of Information Policy and CIO, Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, The Netherlands

“A conference in which the opportunities and questions concerning innovation, technology, information provision and digitisation in healthcare are central. In contrary to some conferences focusing on sending us information, this was much more of a meeting and action conference. This process was facilitated by beautiful people, round tables and of course the Spanish sun. Working together in workshops, entering into a dialogue and not just ‘nodding in agreement’ or ‘hesitantly applauding’.”Anne-Miek Vroom, Medical Sociologist, Founding director IKONE, Consultant Health&Innovation, Patientexpertise, Speaker, The Netherlands

CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS

Centred around innovation, HIMSS and Health 2.0 sessions during the three-day conference explored challenges and benefi ts that the technological revolution is bringing to the healthcare space. Here are some of the highlights:

Involve the end user! The opening keynote sessions held a common thread which suggested that the future of digital health must be co-created with all of the end users of digital tools involved, but that the initial steps have only just been taken in this journey. Dr Bob Wachter, Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, said: “Today, the electronic medical record has followed a similar path of not con-sulting the providers, and is often their enemy.”

Healthcare IT in Europe: The patient as a co-builderFacing the silver tsunami of an ageing population, healthcare will have to use data and information in ways not used before. Success, though, will only come when the patient is understood as being the co-builder of the healthcare information space. “Twenty years from now, medical care will largely be centred around patients’ homes,” said Hal Wolf, President and CEO of HIMSS, in his opening keynote address at HIMSS Europe 18.

“Think big, act small, start at the HIMSS and Health 2.0 Conference”The HIMSS Dutch Community descended upon Sitges in large numbers, making The Netherlands the country with the highest representation of digital health profes-

sionals during the event. Erik Gerritsen, Secretary at the Dutch Ministry of Health, highlighted how he would like all healthcare stakeholders to work towards a shared purpose and plans to ensure healthcare providers are sharing their data to improve care and drive interoper-ability. Gerritsen was open about the role of local and national authorities: “Governments have a responsibility towards their citizens to accelerate health innovation, so the benefi ts are available to them at the right condi-tions. We need to ensure that digital health adds value to patients and keeps citizens healthy. That it enables healthcare professionals to spend their valuable time and knowledge on providing the best possible care at the right place. That all digital communication is trust-worthy and safe.” Women in Health ITThe fi ndings of a recent Women in Health IT survey were made public during the HIMSS Europe and Health 2.0 Conference in Sitges, Barcelona on 28 May. Over 93% of the respondents think there is not enough recognition of the contribution women executives make in the industry. Lower chances of promotion, lower salary and unequal workplace treatment are among the most common forms of discrimination for the 60% of respondents who report-ed experience with gender-based discrimination. Elena Sini, CIO of the IRCCS Humanitas in Italy, HIMSS Europe Governing Council and HIMSS Women in Health IT Community Member, said: “mentoring programmes and networking events are key in breaking down barriers and empowering women in order to achieve their own success!”
