Conclusions

Despite different usages of the site the main action is thouroughfare by walking. This action is highly characterised by the schedule of the sourrond-ing university with high spikes of activity each full hour as classes ends. In terms of spatial distribution one notices that the highest concentration of social interaction takes place on the grass lawn in the north-eastern part of the site. This stems from the fact that all benches and places to sit on the site is either placed on rows or around trees with occupants facing away from eachother.

Concrete Lawn, is surrounded by popular buildings, such as the union house and MSD building, making the circulation in this area almost always constant. The site is primarily used as an access point and a shorter route for pedestrians to get to and from places such as union house and other buildings.

The concrete lawn used to be a ornamental lake before 1939. At that time, the Biology school and museum were around the lake, and there was glass plot on the other side. Later the the lake was filled die to space limited, museum changed to Union House, and Biology School changed to Baldwin Spencer Building. Then the Old Commerce and Redmond Priestley replaced of the glass plot. The Melbourne School of Design was built in 2013 as the latest building on campus.
