Dear Friends,During Holy Week we again touched the mystery of life, death

and resurrection. We have celebrated this mystery in the life ofJesus and reflected on the same mystery in our own lives. Daily, weexperience the dying and rising of hopes not fulfilled. And, for some

of us, this year has brought us deeply into the Paschal Mystery through theloss of a loved one, a family member, or a friend.

The Sisters of the Holy Family have lost a dear friend, Associate, and co-worker with the death of Janet Pessagno. Many of you knew Janet personallyand many others knew her through her work as our Development Director. Thegift she so generously shared with all of us - herself - will be missed.

However, the influence Janet has had on each of us will remain. We paytribute to Janet’s dauntless spirit through the pictures displayed in this issue, which remind us of the many ways she worked in order to spread the missionof the Sisters of the Holy Family to all she met.

It has been said many times that our lives are like a tapestry made up ofthe individuals and circumstances of our days. Janet is a thread in thatpattern for the Sisters of the Holy Family.

As the mystery of Jesus touches each of us this Easter Season may we livein the blessing of peace, which He gives to us. And may we continue to holdeach other in prayer as we work together “to seek out and advocate for the poorand needy, especially families, for the kingdom of God.”

CLOSING ONE DOOR…OPENING ANOTHERSan Jose House Closing & Opening Ceremony

A beautiful celebration of memories, departures and new beginnings tookplace on Foundation Day, November 2,2003, in San Jose.

At 1050 St. Elizabeth’s Drive, theSisters processed into the Chapelaccompanied by Reverend DonalBurke, a Capuchin friend fromBurlingame, California. A prayerful“remembering” followed as the Sistersshared the many wonderfulexperiences of how the Convent, aftermuch sacrifice, had been lovingly andwell planned in every detail and ofhow, when the Convent was beingbuilt, the Sisters had excitedly visitedeach day to see its progress. Some ofthe Sisters remembered that when theyfirst arrived it had taken them sometime to get used to living in such a“spacious” building after having lived in such tightquarters in the previous, much smaller San Jose Convent.

The Chapel, where the Sisters were sitting, had beenthe heart of gatherings for so many years for Mass andprayer. The Sisters remembered many meals and

celebrations in the dining room. Theyalso remembered all the wonderfulministries in the many parishes, theDay Home that had been supported bythis lovely home, and all thewonderful lay people who have beenso faithful over the many years. Now,the Convent will continue to be a placeof service as it is transferred to its newowner, Self-Help for the Elderly.

After processing in prayer throughthe lower floor, each Sister was given acutting from the rose garden andinvited to the two lovely newresidences where the Sisters will beliving in San Jose: Casa San Jose at1825 Via El Capitan, and St. Elizabethat 504 Shadow Court. Father Donalblessed each of the new Convents anda small reception was enjoyed as the

Sisters thought of “new beginnings” in San Jose. Althoughit was a bitter-sweet day, the Sisters continue to trust inthe many blessings that God has bestowed on them in thepast, and to what is waiting to be revealed to them in thefuture.

Above: Father Donal Burke leads Sisters infarewell blessing at the old Convent. SistersMichaela O’Connor and Sharon Flanniganremove the name plaque from the convent, to beplaced in the archives.Left, right and below: Prayers and celebrations atthe Sisters’ new homes.

“The Spirit of MotherEarth Embraces the

Sacredness of All Life.”In carrying on the steward-ship of the Motherhousehistorical grounds and reli-gious grottos, which werepart of the estate when theSisters came to Mission SanJose in 1948, the Sisters con-ceived the idea of MemorialGardens to honor and carefor God’s creation, and toinsure the continuance ofthis wonderful naturalCalifornia heritage. In thesummer of 1994, the Sistersbegan landscaping theMemorial Gardens on the sunrise side of theMotherhouse. The first section, including a pond andwaterway, was dedicated to Matt Whitfield. The pro-ject expanded as families and friends dedicated plants, bushes and trees in memory of their loved ones.

A memory marker bearing the name of thedeceased and the name of the donor is placed in anarea selected by the donor. Each person is alsoremembered in a Memorial Gardens Book kept in theCommunity Room in the Motherhouse, whichoverlooks the Gardens. On May 29, 1995, the MemorialGardens were dedicated at a prayer service and sixsections were blessed.

Presently there are 43memorial markers and 3sponsor markers in theGardens. Many of theSisters walk through theMemorial Gardens andremember the deceased inprayer.

Palmdale Spectacular hasbeen a huge success the pastfive years, raising about$100,000 each year for ourMission Fund. This successwas due in a large part toJanet Pessagno’s tirelesswork. The Spectacular wasJanet’s passion. She foundsponsors, organized volun-teers, got donations, planned and orchestratedevents. Then she made sureeveryone had a great timeand everything went asplanned…and smiledthrough it all!

Our annual October Holiday Boutiqueushered in a great opportunity to get thatshopping done early. Sister Dolores Freitas, coordinator of this event since 1970, and herdedicated 30 volunteers, who meet everyweek for approximately 10 months toprepare the holiday gifts, did a wonderful, creative job! Most have been helping since1985 and enjoy the camaraderie and thesupport each receives from the group. Otherbusy hands created seasonal gifts and gifts

for all ages, as well as provided baked goods. An additional 30volunteers assisted in sales during the days of the Boutique.

Ticket sales realized $22,870 and donations totaled $3,827.Total net proceeds were $28,714 which will go for the care of ourfrail elder Sisters. We appreciate the generous support of ourmany benefactors.

Congratulations to the raffle winners:1st prize $1,000 Fred Rebello2nd prize $500 Judy Duhamer3rd prize $250 Rosemary Connelly

Congratulations also to Rita Gillmouth, the winner of the beautiful Christmas tree donated by Janet Pessagno and decorated by the Gift Gallery.

“Priests have often

asked me what is the

special work of Sisters

of the Holy Family,

and I have always said

that they were gleaners

— gleaners of souls.

Priests can administer

the Sacraments, but

after all, there are

many souls they can

never reach.”
