Retreat Description: Loss enters our lives in many ways: death, geographic move, tragedy, career transition, empty nest, caring for parents or grandchildren, chronic illness, full nest “again”, and many more. This retreat/workshop is for anyone who has experienced any type of loss and also for those who are journeying with another in their loss.

We will spend time exploring the landscape of loss and the ways it affects us, learning tools to help us navigate our unique journeys, and utilizing ritual to support healing. Further retreats, workshops, and support groups are likely to be created as an extension of this retreat/workshop.

After you register, a questionnaire (to help with the grief process) will be sent for you to complete and bring with you to the workshop.

For Sister Marilyn Carpenter’s Bio, please refer to page 6.

We will explore the spiritual implications of the modern sciences that are part of our everyday 21st century lives, from cell phones, to automobiles, to computers. We’ll see how modern science and spirituality combine to enhance our non-dual understanding of the universe.

Amy Agape, PhD, has been living with death consciously for the past seventeen years. A rare heart and lung condition has led her to the stage of active dying three separate times. As a hospice volunteer and educator, Amy witnesses and supports others during their final weeks and days; and as a spiritual director, she accompanies many on their spiritual journey.

No matter where you are in the world, we are capable of doing spiritual direction online!

ARE YOU A SEEKER?Are you seeking a closer relationship with God? Are you interested in deepening your spiritual journey? Sisters of Benet Hill invite you to explore with spiritual direction.

“Answering God’s call to enter into silence with him has begun to bring more peace than just doing all the talking and petitioning. What I treasure most about this entire journey is waking up enough to notice, truly notice, how God is working in my life every day. I have begun to see with sharper vision the actions and gifts of God in the ordinary and in the extraordinary. I am grateful beyond words for my time in this program and to everyone who has mentored me on this journey. I now look forward with joy to being a companion to others who want to notice how God loves them and how he is working in their lives.“ -BSFP Graduate

“I’ve learned to listen. For the first time in my life that I’m aware of, I’ve actually listened deeply. I pray to be able to listen deeply to my family and in all parts of my life. I’m not there yet, by far, but it is the desire of my heart. That is the greatest teaching and gift that I have received from this program.” -BSFP Graduate

Each of these methods leads toward a fuller understanding and transformation of self.

“In one of the very first classes, we were told that we are the beloved, the redeemed and the forgiven. This is our God-given identity, and through this program, many of us have come a long way, sometimes kicking and screaming, to this final realization: to know ourselves deeply and love ourselves as God loves us. We have learned a new way of living in the world, through awareness, and to see with God’s eyes, to hear with God’s ears, and to love with God’s heart.” -Global Online Graduate

The six-week session is conversation centered on a written text or video series (or both) that help participants engage in meaningful discussions about issues and concerns of our times. This ‘conversation’ format is unique in that participants are encouraged to share articles, videos and their own life experience giving greater knowledge and insight to the whole group. This Spiritual Conversation centers on Pope Francis’ Apostolic Letter Misericordia et Misera (November 2016).

In his letter, the Pope offers insight on his understanding of mercy. We will also explore aspects of Catholic moral and social teaching which influence our faith and our socio-economic, cultural and political choices. Our ‘conversations’ are held in an atmosphere of prayer and attentive listening to each other’s wisdom.

However, mystical experience is very personal and extremely intimate. Each mystic has his or her own story, lived in a particular time and place. Each mystic has very special encounters with God which we are privileged to share. Befriending the Mystics is designed to give participants a chance to peek in on the mystical experience of a variety of people throughout history. Each session will include prayer, a presentation on a particular mystic and prayer using Lectio Divina with the mystic’s writings.

Retreat Description: Walking a labyrinth is a lesser known part of the Christian tradition. Our outdoor labyrinth was created in 2001 by Sister Jan Ginzkey and 37 volunteers and is based on the ancient, yet contemporary labyrinth design found in the Cathedral in Chartres, France. The labyrinth is a metaphor of life. We did not smooth the ground or remove trees because life is not smooth and we meet obstacles along the way. You are invited to experience prayer in a new way by walking the labyrinth. Take advantage of this opportunity for silent meditation and contemplation.

Class Description: This four-week class invites participants to renew, refresh and deepen their understanding of the influence and impact of the Holy Spirit in their personal spiritual journey. The Holy Spirit is always active in our lives, (whether we are aware or not), inviting us to experience deeper meaning, purpose and immersion into the Divine. Healing Our Losses: Dancing with Grief Saturday, Jan. 27 9:00 am to 3:00 pm Fee: $65 Presenters: Amy Agape & Sister Marilyn Carpenter, OSB Please bring your own lunch, as lunch is not provided.

Retreat Description: We are told there is “a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance” -Ecclesiastes 3:4 and yet when we experience loss, it sometimes seems as though we will never laugh or dance again. To be ‘bereaved’ means to be ‘torn apart’. When we have suffered the loss of someone or something we love, the grief can be almost unbearable; yet Jesus promises us that we will find comfort in this darkest of times. How can we find that comfort? By honoring our unique, individual pathways with loss and by practicing healthy methods of grieving and mourning, we weave together the different seasons of our lives into one complete tapestry; we learn to cry and laugh, to mourn and dance. This retreat/workshop will build on our first Healing Our Losses retreat and serve as a stand-alone event for newcomers. It is offered for anyone who has experienced grief and for those who companion the bereaved. We will spend time exploring our own unique journeys with loss and the ways it affects us, and create opportunities for healing through contemplation, practice and ritual. After you register, a questionnaire (to help with the grief process) will be sent for you to complete and bring with you to the workshop.

Spiritual Conversations: “EXPLORING WHAT DEATH CAN TEACH US ABOUT LIVING” Tuesdays: April 10 - May 15 9:30 am to 11:30 am Fee: $85.00 includes a copy of The Five Invitations: Exploring What Death Can Teach Us about Living Facilitator: Amy Agape, Ph.D

Class Description: Jesus taught that in order to save our lives we must lose them. What does that mean? How can we die before we die? Death is not merely one final happening in a lifetime; it is not the finish line that we are forced toward as we take our final breaths. Rather, all deaths are integral to our life – both our final, physical death and all the smaller deaths we experience on the way to that last event. We can use our awareness of death to help ourselves prepare for our physical dying and to help us live each day more abundantly. As we do this, we are following the Way of Jesus. Our focus text will be Frank Ostaseski’s The Five Invitations: Exploring What Death Can Teach Us about Living, an insightful new offering based on Ostaseski’s decades of experience companioning hospice patients. We will also utilize other writings, videos, and - most significantly -our own, unique experiences to consider this incredibly vital question. Please join us and add your voice to the conversation.

Class Description: Come and realize anew that from your mother’s womb, you are cherished and invited to participate in the Oneness and Threeness of God. We will explore our personal invitation into the Mystery and wonder of God’s Divine Community. Experience and rest in the knowledge that you are loved, forgiven and pursued by a jealous God.

Spring Retreat ~ “YOU ARE LOVED, FORGIVEN AND PURSUED BY A JEALOUS GOD. ” Saturday, April 14 9:00 am to 1:00 pm Fee: $45 Presenter: Sister Rose Ann Barmann, OSB (Bio on page 15) Stations of the Cross

(right) Pray in the more traditional devotional setting, once again surrounded by the stillness of the forest. The Stations of the Cross were designed and hand carved on redwood plaques by the Sisters of Benet Hill during the 1960’s. The 14 stations hang on individual pines trees throughout a wooded area next to the community’s cemetery and were recently refurbished by Sister Evangeline Salazar, OSB.

The Whitewater Benedictine Community is a mission of Benet Hill Monastery. This Community began in 1971 when three Visitation nuns came to Colorado to establish a new monastery of the Visitation Order. The women desired to live the poverty and simplicity of original monasticism, and to have their community accessible to others. They found a hundred acre site in a desert mountain valley on the Western Slope of the Rocky Mountains, twenty-three miles from Grand Junction, Colorado. In February 2012, the Whitewater Community officially joined Benet Hill Monastery in Colorado Springs, Colorado, but continue their mission work in Whitewater.
