Rabbi’s Corner I am sitting in Jerusalem as Egyptians riot in the streets of Cairo. A governmental overthrow in Tunisia earlier this week has led to an enthusiastic reaction in the Arab “street”, and demonstrations in a number of Arab capitals. If changes do occur, Israelis hope the future will bring stability to the region rather than more anarchy. Anticipating the riots, the Egyptian govern-ment followed what has now become as reliable script of despotic governments: they turned off access to the internet, cell phones and twitter. It’s too little too late, however. The communication revolution has opened the eyes of people who live under despotic regimes. They have CNN – they can see how people live in other, freer, countries. They can imagine a better future for themselves. Rioting in the streets may be set off by frustration, but it is fueled by the people’s vision of changes they want. It’s a recurring pattern in history: those who seek to thwart revolution do everything they could to limit their peo-ple’s exposure to the outside world. In communist Bulgaria, for example, policemen received financial incentives to supervise the behavior of the Bulgarian citizens. Candidates for jobs in the police had to waive their right to carry a passport and trav-el outside of Bulgaria - including to other communist countries, where they might see that things could be different. Today, in contrast, the ubiquity and accessibility of real time images and news from around the world gives revo-lutionary leaders ample inspiration to envision an alternate, improved, future. Yet, even before technology opened so many eyes, the story of Moses and the Exodus illustrates the critical
role information has always played. Significantly, Moses does not arise from the ranks of his brother slaves. Fate has placed him in a position of privilege, living in Pharaoh’s Pal-ace as a member of the royal family. Born into slavery, he knows its humiliations. Growing up in prosperity, he knows
what the good life can be. As Noam Zion, one of my teachers at Jerusalem’s Hartman Institute, a modern orthodox think tank where I am studying this week with twenty five rabbis of different de-nominations, put it: “Slaves rebel against their masters not because of their urge for freedom of expression, but rather because they have discov-ered another possible world order in which they need not live as slaves.” They have seen the promised land; now they want it as their own. What’s true of our people’s history is true of our own personal journeys. Pesach re-
minds us that change is always possible, even at the most challenging times, even in the personal arena of our lives. May the coming months toward Spring (yes, it may yet arrive sometime soon!) awaken us to the possibilities of improvement in our own lives and the lives of our families. If we learn nothing else from the season’s holy days, may it be that the lives of blessing we live can and should inspire us toward positive change and personal growth and freedom. Or, in more concise terms: “Change: It’s not just for despotic regimes any more!”

Mr. Robert Bentley, governor of Alabama, created quite a stir recently by stating that those who were not believ-ers in Christ were not his brothers and sisters. In my judg-ment, protesters read his remarks incorrectly. The governor clarified his sentiments, which were ex-pressed as a portion of a sermon in a church set-ting, in response to the barrage of criticism. He asserted that as governor of the state, he would treat citizens equally. As a Christian, he felt a unique bond with the faithful. Our relationships, one with the other, are not one dimensional. Be-cause someone is my brother, it does not mean I like him. Cain, the first man on earth, killed his brother in a fit of jealous rage. My favorite plumber, an Or-thodox Christian, strives constantly to get me to believe what he is convinced is the key to my salvation. We are friends, but not brothers in Christ. Rabbi David Shapiro (alav hshalom) lived in the inner city and adored the small Black children in his neighborhood. They looked upon him as some
kind of saint (he was!). A central assertion of the Jewish faith is that Jews are bound one to the other in a unique covenant with God.
This does not in any way suggest that we are pre-vented from having close personal relationship with non-Jews, nor that we should esteem and feel affec-tion for every Jew we happen to meet. There are different qualities of relationship. At the time of marriage, one makes a commitment that the bond-ing with this person will be unique and exclusive and will remain so as long as “both shall live”. To the extent that one joins a fraternal order, or works for a corporation, or joins a political party, there is a spe-
cial quality of binding that such membership entails. So I have no quarrel with Governor Bentley. I don’t even want him as a brother. I just expect to be granted equitable treatment under the law should I ever choose to visit or reside in the State of Alabama.

Cantor’s Notes Becoming B’nei Mitzvah at Congregation Sinai
Each and every moment we celebrate a child becoming bar/bar mitzvah in our congregational family is a moment of awe and wonder. Parents reflect on their son or daughter’s childhood, grandparents on the job their own children have done taking on the role of parent. As clergy, Rabbi Cohen and I are often caught up think-ing about the journey this particular child has taken to arrive at this critical moment – the moment where they very publicly take their place in our community as a Jewish adult. At Sinai, we have a long process to help our students prepare for this important moment. Begin-ning three calendar years before their thirteenth birthday, we assign bar or bat mitzvah dates on Shabbat morning to each child. (We are currently working on the 2014 dates!) In their fifth grade year, we meet with parents to orient them to our process. In 6th grade, together with our 6th grade Youth Educa-tion teacher, we offer three family learning programs. In them, we explore the three Jewish principles of Torah (learning), Avodah (prayer) and G’milut Chasadim (acts of loving kindness). Learning as a family is a powerful way for us to start this process.
And then, eleven months before the bar/ bat mitzvah
date – the real learning begins! We see preparing for this event as much more than learning to chant Torah or Hafta-rah. Our students, together with Rabbi Cohen, our b’nei mitz-vah tutoring staff and me – Linda Ross and Marilyn Kraar - , travel on the journey of learning for these eleven months.
They study their Torah portion in depth, learn to chant or read Torah without the assistance of record-ings, they delve into tefillah, and prepare to not just lead the service with Hebrew proficiency, but with meaning. During these eleven months, students attend weekly meetings one-on-one with our “B’nei Mitzvah Team.” It is our honor to guide them, teach them, learn from them, and watch them grow. Throughout the time our students spend in our pro-gram, they work with our staff, their family, and their friends and classmates. Their journey is also sup-
ported by both the Sinai Brotherhood and Women of Sinai, as well as our synagogue board.
We feel so privileged to share in the most significant moments of the Jewish lifecycle. Becoming bar or bat mitz-vah is something that happens by age – without any pomp, circumstance or preparation. It is our great joy to make this moment meaningful and memorable for each and every member of our congregational family.

From the President I will have a new title this summer, for the second time, MOTB. As the mother of three daughters there could be little more exciting than to have a new son, even at my age. I am already blessed with one son-in law who I adore, and now after more than five years, on August 27, David Levi will be-come “official” in our family. I am smiling as I see our Jessica and David experience the honor and joy of committing to a friend and soulmate for life. When you become a mother, your life revolves around hold-ing your child tightly, but with every passing year, it is all about letting go. Yet the ultimate pleasure is to see your children experience caring and compatibility with the one they love. I wish that for each of you. At our last family wedding, in my speech to my oldest daughter, I quoted John Lennon: “Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans.” I am also empowered by these words, for time is precious. This is my segue for asking each of you to continue to support our synagogue, find time in your busy lives for that which is incredibly meaningful. Sinai is a place where community is created and strengthened. Step up to volunteer-ing, perhaps taking a leadership role. Make a difference. Be personally involved. Would you like to be on the Board of Trus-tees? Would you like to chair a committee? Would you like to participate in planning one of our many fun events? Would you like to be more active with Brotherhood or Women of Si-nai? You will enjoy interacting with our many dedicated con-gregants. Meet and greet our many exceptional new member families. Don’t wait to be asked, we need you. Sinai is a cul-
ture of sustainability, for ourselves, our families, our commu-nities and for the wider world. We all need to draw freshly on the power of Jewish tradition, and the resources of commu-nal Jewish life, to rethink our relationship to our synagogue that helps sustain Jewish life for all.
I am already nearing the end of my second year as president. I would like to think that I am a better person for undertaking this surprisingly com-plicated job. I am attempting to stay on task, but challenges arise each day, on occasion even I have to re-energize. I continue to look to each of you! Sometimes I take on thankless tasks, but when I see them through to conclusion, I have a personal sense of accomplishment. I have personally learned much about my Jewish soul, an unex-pected reward of the presidency. Working with our incredible clergy and staff is certainly a blessing. I
attend services almost every Shabbat and I am enjoying it and more. Delegating is an art, and I am still learning to practice this. Too often I tend to lead with my heart, with an overwhelming sense of passion that might drive others cra-zy. Perhaps that is acceptable, as Sinai has continued to flourish and provide a rich tapestry of Jewish life for all of its members. For this, I thank each of you, for your commitment and consistent support; it ensures a strong future together. Thank you for the privilege of leadership. But know that I will be awaiting your call!!

Adult Education
We're looking for more people to join our long-running Advanced Biblical Hebrew Class.
The class generally meets weekly during the school year (we take summers off) on Thursday evenings
from 7:15-9:00 pm, however, we adjust the schedule to meet the class members' needs. Anyone who can
read Hebrew fairly well should be able to fit right in. The goal of the class is for participants to enhance
their ability to understand prayers from our services as well as Biblical passages. The class is fun,
challenging and rewarding.

The Milwaukee Area Reform Congrega ons will again sponsor two adult learning sessions en tled “Tuesday with the Rabbis” on
Tuesday evenings, April 5th (at Congrega on Sinai) and April 12th (loca on to be announced) at 7:30 pm.
On April 5th, the topic will be Reform Judaism in the Twenty First Century; on April 12th, the subject will shi to the Rela onship between American Jews and Israel. Rabbis Mark Berkson, David Cohen, Dena Feingold, Joe Prass and Ron Shapiro will share their thoughts and facilitate a conversa on with those in a endance.

The coming of Purim and Passover has always been an exciting time in my family’s life. Courtesy of my mom, here are a few special ideas to get ready for Purim and Pesach with your children! As we get ready for Purim, here are a couple of ques-tions you can ask your children to bring extra joy and mean-ing to the holiday: ● Who do we know that might need some extra cheer to make their Purim as fun and silly as ours? (This is a great way to create small list of people to send Purim baskets to, or to call on Purim just for the joy of it!) ● Are there children who might like to be dressing up for Pu-rim or for play that don’t have dress up clothes? Do we have any we can give them?
And as we get ready for Passover, a few tasks that are perfect for young ones to do: ● Clean closets and under beds in their rooms…we don’t want any chametz lying around! ● Look through all the drawers – just in case crumbs fell out of pockets, fold clothes nice before putting them back in! ● Write or create one new thing (song, drawing, poem…!) to add to the Passover seder this year! (You can bring those to the second seder at temple this year!)

Bring your moms, dads, grandparents and your singing voice for a great Shabbat together!

Meet Sinai's new Head Custodian: Larry Mesta
I am originally from San Fran-cisco, California. After serving 9 years in the US Navy as a Maintenance and Repair Mechanic, my family and I moved to Milwaukee to be closer to family. My wife, Jennifer, and I have been married for 13 years and have 2 wonderful children, Anthony (12) and Angelina (9). I love fishing with my kids, coaching little league baseball and rooting for the San Francisco 49ers and the San Francisco Giants. I don't know much about the Jewish faith but I am learning every day and am very excited to be part of the Sinai family. Everyone I have met has welcomed me with open arms. So, if you see something in the building that needs spe-cial attention or fixing, please don't hesitate to call on me.

May - Softball season begins! Games are held each Tuesday night at either 6 PM or 7 PM from May through early August. This is a part of the JCC softball league and last year 14 teams from different Jewish organizations participat-ed. There is a $20 team membership fee in addition to be-ing a member of the Brotherhood. Last season was a huge success as Congregation Sinai won their division. B’nei Mitzvah Project Opportunities: Enhancing our partner-ship with the SDC …now the Community Advocates Family Support Shelter B’nei Mitzvah Projects are opportunities to share your joy and blessings with those who are less fortunate. Our Sinai celebrants have decorated their tables with baskets of food, toys, sports equipment and more. Recently, Ilana Friedman prepared “Play Packs for the SDCS Shelter” for her Bat Mitzvah. As she wrote: …I became interested in the SDC Shelter through my volunteering with Congregation Sinai (where) we would create hygiene kits for the families. …I created Play Packs for the chil-dren when they arrive to help make them a little more com-fortable and not so scared. These packs contain toys, color-ing supplies, educational items, games, books and stuffed animals to make them feel special and welcome.
Feeding the Hungry: Sinai and the Bethesda Meal Program From October 2009 - September 2010, Bethesda’s Outreach program served 33,707 meals – 4,186 to children. As Mother Liller Bates, Director of the program, recently wrote: “Your support has helped us tremendously in our endeavors to assist and provide a life line to households with emphasis on children. ….If not for the concerns and involvements of an enti-ty such as Congregation Sinai and others, the Bethesda Out-reach Program, Inc. would be limited in providing the neces-sary assistance and opportunity for families and children with their nutritional needs.” VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: If you are interested in helping to serve lunch once a month and/or coordinating volunteers to serve lunch once a month, please contact Idy Goodman at [email protected] HELP NEEDED: Much of the financial support comes through the Sinai Tzedakah Fund, which congregants can support when making donations to Sinai. Please consider this when making your next contribution in honor or memory of someone.
On January 28th, Congregation Sinai's Social Action Committee once again participated in the Milwaukee Community Baby Shower spon-sored by the Social Development Commission of Greater Milwaukee in conjunction with TMJ4 and Sentry Foods. This one day annual event collects baby supplies for needy families in the communi-ty. Sinai volunteers, Edith Gilman, Lisa Phillips, Leslie Hayes, and Naomi Soifer, staffed the event from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wauwatosa Sentry Food Store on 67th and State Street. It was heartwarming to see how many baby items were collected. Since this is a yearly event, some people spend months knitting, crocheting and quilting baby blankets to donate----they were lovely!

Last summer, I wrote an article for the Sinai News about the benefits of eating locally grown foods (July/August 2010 Sinai News.) That article led to a discussion of how to make locally grown foods more readily available to our syna-gogue community. And that discussion has led to this very exciting announcement: This summer, Congregation Sinai will be a drop site for CSA STONEY MEADOW FARM making farm fresh vegeta-bles, fruits and herbs readily available to the Sinai communi-ty! Here is a description of the farm and the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) share they offer from their website: “Stoney Meadow Farm is a small, family farm located near Cascade, Wisconsin on approximately 6 acres. We are dedi-cated to environmental stewardship by working in harmony with the land to grow fresh, healthy fruits and vegeta-bles. The farm offers a 16-week CSA subscription from the beginning of July through October. At Stoney Meadow Farm, we strive to provide the best possible growing circumstanc-es: quality organic seed, excellent soil health, companion planting and old-fashioned, time tested ways of farming to produce the most healthy and safe fruits and vegetables for you and your family. A brief summary of our January event On Sunday, January 30, the Israel Committee hosted a presentation by Milwaukee Jewish Federation Israeli Emis-sary (Schlicha) Paz Goldshmidt about the advancements in Israeli science, technology, and agriculture. We learned many exciting facts about Israel and her contributions to the world of medicine, computers, environment, and business and why Israel has been so successful in producing start-up compa-nies.
Pillar of Fire - New DVD Documentary at Sinai Library
The incredible story of Israel's rebirth - this landmark series is the masterpiece of Israeli documentaries and the crowning achievement of Israeli television. (in English) This seven part documentary series portrays: - The Jewish people's return to the promised land. - The Jewish-Arab struggle for Palestine. - Persecution of Jews in Europe. - The war of independence. - The creation of the state of Israel. Pillar of Fire relates the drama of the Jewish people's return to Zion and the establish-ment of the state of Israel. It is an extensive documentary production that features rare documentary footage collected from more than 30 archives and private collections throughout the world, as well as many eye-witness interviews. This documentary series also portrays the Jewish-Arab struggle for Palestine, persecution of Jews in Europe, the war of 1948 and David Ben-Gurion's declaration of independence.

“Scene at Sinai”
On January 22nd Sinai members and Rabbi Cohen gathered in the Worship and Learning Center for a
Tu B’Shevat Seder. All enjoyed beautiful music, mystical texts, and delicious fruits and wines to celebrate the first fruits of Israel. Thank you Jill Weinshel and Ramona Tenorio for creating this
beautiful experience.
About 30 people attended the Brotherhood-sponsored Sinai Super Bowl party. The evening was just like the game,......happy, sad, elated, and full of emotion! Everyone had a great time and the Brotherhood got a standing ovation at the end. Of course at
that point they would have applauded almost anything!
Families gathered at Sinai for a Super Shabbat! Everyone wore their Green and Gold and enjoyed traditional Super Bowl treats – chili, subs, pizza, chips and salsa – the works!

A.J. Pangallo
A.J. Pangallo of Mequon will celebrate becoming a Bar Mitzvah on April 30, 2011 at Congregation Sinai. He is the son of Nancy Gollin of Whitefish Bay and David Pangallo of Mil-waukee, and the grandson of Deborah & Jim Gollin of Mequon. A.J. is a student at MJDS. A.J. has been volunteering at Sarah Chudnow for his Mitzvah project by helping the resi-dents with exercising and playing Bingo. In his spare time he loves movies, dancing, playing bas-ketball, golf and tennis. A.J. and his family wish to thank Rabbi Cohen, Cantor Robins and Marilyn Kraar for their generous guidance and support. A very special thank you also goes to Tzipi Altman-Shafer for her extra help in preparing for this day.

Ben Friedman
Benjamin Nathaniel Friedman will become a Bar Mitzvah on March 26, 2011 when he reads the Torah portion “Tazria” from the book of Leviticus. Ben is the son of Renana and Tom Friedman. He is the grandson of Charlotte and Sterling Friedman and Michele and Paul Vishny. Ben is a 6th grader at Maple Dale Middle School. He enjoys playing soccer, foot-ball, and basketball. He also enjoys music and playing the bass and bass guitar in both Orchestra and Jazz band. Ben has also been a counselor-in-training at Camp Shalom in Kansas and has enjoyed his experiences working with younger kids. Ben believes that reading is very important and that every child should have the chance to do so. He will be donating books to the Next Door Foundation in Milwaukee, WI. To donate to the Next Door Foundation a drop box will be available in the Sinai foyer from March 1-March 25, 2011. Ben is very proud to become a Bar Mitzvah this spring. He and his family give big thanks to Rabbi Cohen, Cantor Robins and Linda Ross for their comforting guidance and assistance in preparing him for this significant milestone.
