featureSTORY
When I moved to historic Roswell there were only a couple of restaurants on Canton Street.
My home was built in 2000 and I was one of the first residents in our development. I had
a clear idea of the look and feel I wanted in my home but as I began to talk with interior
designers, I realized that there was simply no way to transfer the vision from my mind to
theirs.
simplyDECOR | Winter2017 15
If it was ever going to become a reality, I would have to roll up my sleeves and give it a
try. That turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. Even though it took
countless hours and more effort than I ever dreamed, decorating my home has been
one of the most delightful experiences of my life. I found great joy in looking for just the
right pieces and incredible satisfaction in adding the colors and touches that created
the mood and feel I wanted in each room. Creating a beautiful environment has truly
become a passion in my life.

I discovered King Galleries almost 10 years
ago, when a dear friend and I were explor-
ing Roswell. It quickly became my favorite
place to shop. The boutique on the street
level is filled with gorgeous things, but what
captured my imagination was the bottom
floor. It’s an ever-changing collection of
furniture and decor that is sold during their
monthly auctions. Susan and Jeff McCu-
miskey, the owners, consign the unique
and beautiful pieces from large estates or
import them from all over the world. They
and their delightful team have become
dear friends as the result of frequent visits
to see their latest treasures or just to stop
and say “hello.”
Without a doubt, the dining room is my
favorite room for entertaining. I love good
food and conversation with dear friends
around my table under the glow of my
crystal chandelier. My favorite accessory
is an iron cross that hangs in my dining
room. It is one of the pieces I bought from
King Galleries. It’s about 300 years old,
hand forged, and came from the top of
a church. On the bottom, you can still
see where it was cut from the roof. As a
Christian author and speaker, it has great
meaning in knowing that it and all it stands
for, has stood the test of time.
Valentine’s day is not just a holiday created by a
greeting card company or florist to sell more
flowers. Valentine’s Day got its origins from
ancient Roman festivals. It is also the time of year
that the birds begin their mating season.
So Why not have a specific day to let people know
that we love them? It seems like it’s the holiday for
lovers; however, if a person wants to show some
body they care about them, why not? Yes, it can
be a romantic time, but Valentine’s Day doesn’t
have to be restricted to romance. The celebration
of Valentine’s Day has become an occasion to
celebrate love in all forms – both couples and single
people.
Parties – Have a “spread the love” party with all of
your friends and celebrate life!
Pamper yourself or a friend – buy yourself a Valen-
tine’s Day gift! Go for a spa treatment, mani/pedi
and indulge yourself that day. Pick up some flowers
for the house – just show the love to yourself.
Spend the time with “Besties” – Go out with friends
or throw them a party! Give your BFF’s flowers.
Acts of Service or Kindness – Visit a nursing or
assisted living home with some flowers. Spend the
day expressing love and grattitude to parents,
colleagues, neighbors or anyone you think needs a
little love.
Send Flowers – Although the red rose is the symbol
of love. There are a great many other choices for
Valentine’s Day. Other flowers that are popular
consist of mixed color roses , beautiful bouquets
with a variety of flowers or simply someone’s
favorite flower! It is a fact that nothing matches
the beauty and aroma of fresh flowers. Fresh
flowers represent the genuine feelings of love for
the recipient.
Roses and their meanings:
Red - love & passion
White - true love, purity of the mind, reverence
Yellow - friendship, celebration , joy
Pink - sweetheart, friendship, admiration
Peach - desire, excitement, appreciation
Orange - enthusiasm, desire
Give what ever color roses or flowers you think will
bring the most joy and show the most love.
Valentine’s Day is all about love and we sure could
use more love in our world Today!
So this Valentine’s Day - Why Not?

St. Simons Island and Georgia’s fabled Golden Isles are rich in history, relaxed charm, and
natural beauty, making it the perfect spot for Georgia vacations. The island is surround-
ed by countless recreational activities, historic sites, shopping, and attractions that offer
something for everyone. Enjoy the day at the beach, on the water, or visiting the historic
St. Simons Island Lighthouse, Christ Church, and Fort Frederica. After taking advantage
of the abundance of outdoor activities, explore the Island’s numerous unique shops and
art galleries.
Celebrating Over 80 Years of Hospitality
The King and Prince Club opened as a seaside dance club in
1935. Six years later, on July 2, 1941, the main hotel building
opened to the public as the King and Prince Hotel and was
immediately praised for its modern features and magnificent
ocean views.
During World War II, the hotel served as a naval coast-watch-
ing and training facility, re-opening in 1947 to resume its
popularity as a favorite island resort with its gracious Mediter-
ranean architecture. The hotel enjoyed extensive renovation
and expansions in 1972 and again in 1983, becoming a member
of the prestigious Historic Hotels of America in 1996. In 2003,
the Resort’s cherished core–the historic main building–under-
went a stunning restoration and enhancement project, result-
ing in 57 new guest rooms and signaling a new era in the guest
experience. In 2005, the Resort was named to the National
Register of Historic Places.
From 2010-2013, the Resort underwent a Castle Makeover,
resulting in new culinary offerings and updated common areas.
The new restaurant, ECHO, gives a nod to St. Simons’ brief
naval history during World War II - through its name and
nautical decor. The lobby Atrium welcomes guests to sit by the
fireplace and the ECHO bar open daily from morning til late
night. The oceanfront pool complex was also redesigned, with a
paver-style deck, pergolas, all new furnishings and umbrellas.
Throughout the many changes over our 81 years of service, one
thing has remained the same: we provide our guests superior
service, outstanding accommodations, and unrivaled Southern
hospitality.

Whether your style is traditional, transitional, or modern we love to put the design together
starting with one inspirational photo or fabric swatch the customer has chosen. With the
popularity of open floor plans, we help our clients that may become overwhelmed de-
signing three rooms at one time. With our knowledge and design experience, we can
work out a three room plan very quickly and help prevent our customers from making
costly mistakes.

The trend is to simplify our homes with
cleaner lines. One way is to use neutral
fabrics, with great textures adding pops
of color in the accents. We have our own
workroom for furniture re-upholstery, drap-
ery and window treatments, headboards
and bedding. We carry the Sam Moore
furniture line because they are American
made and offer a great selection of fabrics
with fewer upcharges.
Panel curtains with a European pleat are
our most popular window treatment. We
can accent with tapes down the leading
edge of the panel to create a unique, cus-
tom look. This adds dimension while main-
taining a clean line. You have probably
seen this look in some of the most popular
decorating magazines.
Top treatments or valances still have an im-
portant part in home decor and we have
made samples of many different styles and
displayed them throughout Decorating
Mart so customers can see what they look
like finished.

One of the most important tools for an
interior decorator is the story board. If you
have several ideas and color schemes in
mind, the story board is the best way to
decide on a final plan.
Creating your own story
board is easy. It starts with
some good old fashioned
window shopping. When
making your way through
the fabric store, ask the clerk
if samples are available. They
often have
fabric samples
pre-cut for
their custom-
er’s conve-
nience. Paint
and flooring
samples are
also important
when creating a color scheme. Your local
home improvement center should have
brochures with pictures or actual mate-
rial samples of cabinets, counter tops and
appliances. This will really let you see how
the room will flow once the project is com-
plete.
After you
have made
your selec-
tions, ar-
range and
adhere your
samples in
order on a
piece of poster board
and label each category.
If you are deciding be-
tween two or more color
schemes, create a story
board for each.
Story boards will help you
decorate your home with
the confidence and ease of a professional
interior decorator.

celeBRATE Warm Your Honey’s Heart...
Valentine’s Day is filled with great hopes
for romance and togetherness yet it often
turns into an evening of long lines, forgot-
ten reservations and quite frankly… disap-
pointment. Bring Valentine’s Day anxiety to
a halt with a sexy, four-star dining experi-
ence at home. Here are some fool proof
ideas to ensure that you and your sweet
heart have a Valentine’s Day neither will
forget.
Either mail or hand deliver an invitation to
your Valentine. Let the invitation announce
a black-tie event to include dinner and
dancing, the place (your living room ) and
time, 8:00pm.
The décor can be simple with 20 or so
red and white helium balloons with long
streamers, or flower arrangements and
candles which add a Victorian feel.
Change the room to instant romance
with the glow of a red lightbulb in one or
two lamps. If you have a fireplace, light it!
Don’t forget your favorite music.
Start by serving a celebratory beverage
with some light appetizers and conversa-
tion. After some socializing, dinner is served.
Move to the dining area, light the candles
and enjoy your perfectly prepared meal.
An easy way to change the look of your
table is to add some heart shaped cut-outs
in the center piece and ribbons to tie the
napkins.
